I just got through with my much anticipated viewing of "The Immediate Family" on Hulu. Obviously, I knew a great deal of it from spending 5 or 10 minutes a day with Mr. Sklar, but I was again reminded as to just how large an influence these men had on my own musical development. The songs I grew up loving, the songs that taught me how to play, the tunes that taught me how to put a song together... it's amazing how many of them have these guys' DNA woven through. Thank you.

I heard today on the radio: If You Leave Me Now…and those violin swells that swirl up during the choruses are real heartstring tuggers. Isn’t it funny that all these years I (of course) had no idea who did the work on those string parts…and just by clicking on this tonight…I now know. It’s a pretty song and Pete sings it perfectly!

👍👍. Perfect complement to the WB video: more insight into how the business works/worked. There's a lot more info around now with the internet, but your stories are even more informative. As for family business, I can't say that I could do my father proud by fixing the transmission on a semi, but I believe that I still know how to make a dollar squeal (in pain from being squeezed so hard). Late into my adulthood it dawned on me that this song sounded a lot like it might be an infanticide song (it's rare that you find singular subgenres); was wondering if Mark Brooks or anybody had any 411 on statements that had been made about content.

What Lee said: A well known and sought after veteran session singer in the L.A. area, Scottie has sung on countless film scores, television shows including the Oscars, the Grammys, commercials and records. Her eclectic career has had her singing with the likes of composers such as John Williams, Michael Giacchino, Alan Sylvestri and Danny Elfman. Artists she’s worked with either in the studio and/or on stage touring include Barbra Streisand, David Byrne, Michael Buble, Michael Jackson and Weird Al Yankovic just to name a few. While continuing her session career, she is now embarking on a whole new musical adventure with her just released debut solo album, “Stories To Tell”. The material she writes engages the listener to take a journey from start to finish. Written and produced exquisitely with catchy, memorable melodies and inviting rhythms that’ll make you dance, as well as some haunting and moody vibes you’ll just want to chill out to. There is nothing else out there on the airwaves that sounds like this record. Her first single release “Ode To Billie Joe” was originally written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry in 1968 and made famous by the iconic string arrangement of Scottie’s father Jimmie Haskell, who garnered a Grammy Award for Best Arrangement. Scottie does a completely different version of this award winning song and Jimmie added one of his very last string arrangements to this version never heard before now. In addition are two other never before heard string arrangements from the renowned music composer, arranger and conductor Jimmie Haskell. Those arrangements show up on two of her eight originals, “Kiss Me” and “Where Are My Angels”. With eleven tracks total “Stories To Tell” is quite the journey. So enjoy the ride. Come and join the party!

My daddy met Jimmie Haskell at the Jose Feliciano concert back in 2004, he conducted the Knoxville Symphony and daddy squeezed in mentioning to Jimmie all the records he had played on like Autoamerican the Denny Doherty album (& daddy sat on the floor like Denny did) a Bobby Goldsboro album and told him the strings on one song were just like Ode To Billie Jo (daddy had on a Cecilo & Kapono shirt mimicking conducting a orchestra, maybe he was brining back a memory of the "two arranger songs" Jimmie did for Joe Porter for Bobby Darin, Thelma Houston and Diahanne Carroll) and mimicked the posing of Jim Hendricks and Ginger Greco LP and he had the Larry Weiss record you played on and it was even autographed to a Jim and Barbara by Larry maybe to Mr. & Mrs. Haskell ("& thank goodness some black and blue marks will never fade away") and my late aunt Marilyn worked in Hollywood for a commissary and met a whole lot of stars and hung out w/ Redd Foxx Oh, and Pearlman was the name of one of Daddy's relatives on his paternal grandparents' side... --

We did a celebration of Max's life a few years before he passed and I was blessed to be able to play along side as he sat in with our House Jazz Combo. Of course we played, Fever! :) He used to call me and tell me stories about the business. He and Hal Blaine were good friends. I know he was part of the wrecking crew for a time. His discography is unbelievable. Thanks!

9 days to go to "double sevens"! An early happy birthday salute to you, Leland! 1:18 The great Jimmie Haskell! Jimmie was commisioned by Capitol records to add strings to Bobbie Gentry's Grammy Award-winning song, "Ode To Billy Joe". In 1977, I played drums for Bobbie in her production shows at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas. Bobbie sang "Ode To Billy Joe" in the show and the string secton of the orchestra played Jimmie's same arrangement that he wrote 10 years earlier for the original recording. Ya' know, Leland, Bobbie's song, "Ode To Billy Joe" always had a kind of surreal meaning for me...June 3rd was my Dad's birthday. "Ode To Billy Joe" was released on July 10, the date my Mom passed away. In 1967 as a graduating senior in high school, my classmates predicted that I'd be playing in Las Vegas in 10 yeers. In 1977 I was hired by Bobbie Gentry to play drums in her production shows in Vegas. Hey! Great version of "Ode" by Scottie! Thank you.
