    CA is in the midst of building their own High Speed Line. However, since the new TGV based Liberty Avelia trainsets in the Northeast Corridor are already approved and certified for use in the US it would make sense for CA to buy the Liberty Avelia trainsets. It also uses the latest generation of TGV technology because even in France the latest generation for TGV IS the Avelia.

    @frglee Amtrak has been upgrading the rails to handle the new Avelia trainsets for 160mph+ service. The new rails are only in the NE Corridor. However, Amtrak does own a set of tracks between Chicago and Detroit that they have the diesel 'Wolverine' service running at 110mph. I wouldn't be suprised if Amtrak extended the Acela service to Detroit and Chicago on those rails.

    Just an FYI, we have had electrified high speed service on the NEC since the days of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which built the NEC. This new unit is undergoing testing. To me tho, it won’t replace the Acela which looked and matched in design much better. The people at Alstrom are morons. These designs are not at all seamless nor matching in streamlining. The locomotive has one of the ugliest designs for high speed rail service. The European designs are much more streamlined and faster… I hope AMTRAK orders a redesign, this is an embarrassment of design…

    In a lot of places in the USA, there is no need for protection because the tracks are so far away from any roads, towns, or people. In the cities there usually is some form of fence or wall. But the stations, even the largest ones, have ZERO security measures what so ever. They may have a random security guard walking around but there are no baggage inspections or metal detectors or stuff like that.

    There are actually a total of 3 ready-to-run trainsets (3-5) based in Philly, in addition to the test trainset (2). You may only see 2 trainsets at a time due to 1 out testing, and the other one either down in DC or in NYC for crew familiarization.

    On the Avelia Liberty, is power now allowed to be passed through passenger coaches to the opposite end power car or is only the one with the pantograph raised pushing/pulling? I know that this type of power pass-through used to be forbidden in the US, although it is common overseas. Also, aren't there issues which crop up from time to time - not all of the time - with the aerodynamics on lead power cars of high speed trains inducing entanglements with the catenary or, at the very least, unstable interfacing between the two? And so why not just raise only the rear one - relative to the direction of travel - if you're only going to have one raised anyway, as the aerodynamics on the rear car produce a more stable interface that isn't as likely to entangle or destabilize. Edit:This second practice is also common overseas.

  • @FanRailer

    @FanRailer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, a high voltage power cable runs between the two power cars to connect them electrically. Once in service, the standard operating procedure will be to run with the rear pan raised. For now, as they test, only one of the power cars has the observation equipment fitted to the pantograph, so that is the pan that is used regardless of travel direction. This also allows gathering of behavioral data for both directions of travel on the same pan.

  • @FFred-us9tw

    @FFred-us9tw

    The power “pass through” as you call it was never “forbidden” in the US. MU equipment has been using jumpers between car sets for 50+ years. The designers simply opted to use both pantographs for simplicity and reliability.

    Always wondered why the power cars never tilted, not so much for comfort, bur for weight distribution. They’re really heavy, and having that further in would lower rail stress and reduce rollover risk

  • @Greatdome99

    @Greatdome99

    3 жыл бұрын

    The wheels don't care what the suspended body is doing. Tilting is only for passenger comfort, not for tracking. The slight shift in CG to the outside rail would actually be detrimental. And don't forget, the track is superelevated anyway.
