16 Sports that Should Be in the Olympics

I have definitely enjoyed this year's Olympic Games...when I've been able to watch them. But if we can have dressage and race walking, I think there are a number of games that would be inexpensive and simple to include that would increase interest and appeal both in younger Americans, and also among people all across the world.
This video is like 10% tongue in cheek, but for the most part, I actually stand by these suggestions. Maybe not in 2020, maybe not in 2024, but someday.

    Ultimate Frisbee, it would become the second sport where men and women compete on an even playing field (the other being equestrian) and you basically need a field or a beach, and a frisbee. It's already got IOC recognition and is really entertaining to watch, plus with the whole being self refereed and promoting Spirit of the Game, it's really alligned with the olympic values

    Mate, quidditch. It's gender inclusive and open to players of all abilities/sporting backgrounds. It also has the greatest community of any sport I've come across. I'm sure someone can enlighten me but I don't currently know of any mixed gender sports in the Olympics, everything is either mens or womens. Quidditch doesn't draw the line at binary, it is inclusive of ALL genders and I think it's time we had that sort of representation on the world stage.

  • @NoxBellatricis

    I have no clue whatsoever about how kite fighting is practised currently, but I suppose it isn't an official sport, right? At least from the footage it looks rather improvised, done wherever there might be enough space to do it. So if it became an olympic discipline, then maybe there would be special places where it is allowed to be "trained"/ whatever and that would prevent those accidents..

  • @antonitescaro2728

    @antonitescaro2728

    8 жыл бұрын

    +NoxBellatricis it's like shooting and archery, you have those on the Olympics, of course they are dangerous practiced outside of proper environments, but a gun or a bow are not so accessible as a Kite for kids or teenagers, which is pretty cheap, and the mixture is just glue and mashed glass so anyone can do it... And most of times they are not aware of how dangerous it is until it's too late

  • @NoxBellatricis

    @NoxBellatricis

    8 жыл бұрын

    I see your point, definitely, but I think if it gained attention/ popularity the awareness of the risks would rise, too. Like if there were rules etc that people would follow, those could minimize the dangers. But then again, this is all just hypothetical and probably it wouldn't work out as well as I would like to imagine it. Also, I should probably just shut up since I haven't heard about this sport prior to watching this video and am definitely not qualified to judge about how it might or might not change in case of an increase of popularity without actually knowing anything about it and the culture that might have formed around it already... But however, in general I believe that awareness (eg of the dangers of kite fighting) comes with more attention. Then again, this could backfire as well, if it results in kids wanting to try it and do so oblivious to it's dangers or something along those lines... So I think I'm just going to stop blabbering on since I don't see me coming to a satisfying solution any time soon. Just one last thing: after considering this whole topic more intensely than I thought I ever would, I don't think I would actually support it, just like I cannot support shooting as a sport, no matter how interesting as a sport it might be... When I first heard about it and wrote that comment I was merely fascinated, I guess.

    Hard to compare kites flying out in the open, controlled by the wind and kill people by kite dude not stopping it in time to guns which are fired down a range 99% of the time, controlled by hands and kill people by someone squeezing a trigger? Also guns serve the purpose of killing intruders and a tyranical government, kites are just for fun and therefore have no excuse to be a neccesary evil people practice with.

    Kite fighting is something just done for fun, at least it is in Pakistan anyway. It is incredibly dangerous though and i wouldn't really want to see it in the olympics as that would promote more people doing it on the streets. As much as I enjoyed it as a kid on family trips to Pakistan, it isn't safe.

    Kite fighting kills people. After a kite is cut free it drifts away uncontrolled. Occasionally, one of these kites, with supper strong, glass coated string still attached cuts into someones neck and kills them. The sport is banned or heavily regulated in many countries for this reason.

    To support the point, huge amount of teamwork, fast and intense play, super awesome plays to watch (catches at the buzzer, dodging multiple balls in one fluid movement, headshots galore), and there's nothing like seeing an 8.5" rubber kickball (or 8.25" super bounce foam, or 7" soffplay ball) cross a court at 70-80 MPH. Tug of war was dismissed from the Olympics because it is by far the most dangerous sport, and has in Olympic history killed members of the audience. The ropes keep snapping, when they try stronger ropes, they still snap, but more violently. I am a huge fan of Wushu, Cheer, mounted archery, free running, and that foot volley ball.

    can't they just do it behind a clear wall like hockey then? besides, technology has improved in the past hundred years, and ropes could probably be made with carbon fiber and stuff now. I don't think 50+ ton rope will snap with ten people pulling on it.

    Elouj Time Reaver A 1/4" AmSteel rope has a breaking strength of 8,600lb. A half inch has a breaking strength of 34,000lb. I couldn't find the spec for a 1 inch rope, but it should be about 200,000 lb. If 20 guys are pulling on it, they would each have to exert 10,000 lbs to reach the rated breaking strength. That's not going to happen. A two or three inch rope? Absolutely no way.

    ++++ In Chile, Kite Fighting is strongly discouraged (not sure if it's illegal, it might be) because of the kite strings: they use metal that can become tangled with electric wires and cables, many children and adults have died by accidental electrocution. Seems quite dangerous, especially since kite flying is usually marketed to children.

    Yes, but even the BBC (which I have watched exclusively this year) has flaws and doesn't cover as many awesome moments as it could. I think American coverage is actually better at covering other country's great or exceptional moments whilst BBC is better (easier to listen to certainly) at their own coverage and allowing alternate access to it. Every media outlet needs to get better at access though as Leslie Jones' twitter coverage is fantastic example of how it can be done better :D

An extremely difficult exercise of gymnastic prowess, stunting excellence, dance, and creative choreography all done by kids college age or under! The talent and work it takes to become a great cheerleader is so underestimated by societies. Plus the US would dominate competitive cheer because we invented it and are much better at it than most of the countries it's gotten to.

    Yeah NBC is broadcasting here in the US and they have everything online but to watch more than 30 minutes you have to sign in with your cable subscription info (even though NBC is available on regular tv to people who don't have a cable subscription). It's infuriating and beyond stupid.

    >to watch more than 30 minutes you have to sign in with your cable subscription Well, that's an "interesting" concept. And I guess is is full of ads as well, judging how much the us-viewers were complaining about ads during the opening ceremony on reddit. I only have 2 free live streams available which show whatever venues the broadcasters think most interesting to the audience. In our "age of the internet" there should really be a streaming service showing all the events live regardless of the viewers location.

Maybe some shooter games as well, such as the CoD franchise (I know there are events such as MLG Orlando supporting this, but I thought it should be taken a step further), maybe TF2, Battlefield, Overwatch, etc.

    Maybe I'm biased, but I would also like to see... like DCI-style marching band competitions in the Olympics. It's basically the same idea as some of the floor-exercises in the Olympics where it's physical prowess timed with music, but in this case these high-caliber marching ensembles are _creating_ the music on top of actually exhibiting that physical prowess. And it's all judged like it is in gymnastics, with points in Music, Visual and General Effect. And you don't need American football fields! In Japan I believe the use empty sumo rings or some other indoor venue, and I imagine in other countries they just use soccer/football fields. Also bonus points for the BattleBots idea. I personally wouldn't think of it as an "Olympic" sport, but it is definitely an underappreciated sporting event in my opinion.

    Personally, I feel the Olympics should be purely for athletic sports. Some things like darts or bowling or vehicle racing or shooting are impressive and take a large amount of skill and hand eye coordination, but may not really require any athletic ability. Rule of thumb, if you can be out of shape or eat a snack and smoke a cigarette while doing it, it's probably not very athletically challenging. But that's just my opinion.

    I like the idea of parkour in the olympics, but I don't get how it could be judged while keeping the integrity of the sport. They'd probably have to keep the same settings for everyone which would mess with how parkour is sort of urban and typically in a pedestrian setting. Also, what would they judge on: speed? Tricks?

  • @Ava-zm9sw

    Well, for real parkour it would be quite easy: Set up a space with a start, a finish and a lot of obstacles. Fastest person wins. Your time will be effected by your planing of the optimal path and your physical ability to overcome the obstacles (where you might plan according to your profficiency in overcomeing specific obstacles), but time is every thing that matters. In freerunning (as actually seen in the video, when he said "parkour") the athlete would either get a specific amount of time ot a specific path on which he may not move backwards (or maybe both) and there would be judges who give points based on the variety, difficulty and quality of movements / tricks - just like in any other freestyle event (figure skating, high diving, rhythmic gymnastics, gymwheel, skateboarding, ...)
