16 May foot issues arise, EPIC lightening storm AI for the cows .

Sorry it’s late kids it’s been a full on day today, not even finished now and it’s 22.00 so that’s made me late posting!! Anyhow…
Cows with foot problems start to arise in the shed, even though Roy claimed we didn’t need foot baths as jerseys have feet like iron (they haven’t agreed with the new concrete) anyhow getting those out, moving tups about, Alan sprays off a few fields for reseeding and we get our first cows artificially inseminated by a delightful man who I scare half to death 😁👌
Farm business survey below
bit.ly/FBSCAYT
in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve
I will be taking you all along for the ride so hit that subscribe button and see you every other day for farming vlogs.
I am overjoyed to be a farmer. I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

Tom pemberton is a wealth of information and insight. He has had foot issues, milking issues, slurry issues and a host of other farm issues and his channel has documented the good the bad and the ugly. I’m sure you guys have been through the same. Reach out to Tom I’m sure being the gentleman he is that he can offer advice on products, what works what doesn’t and what is cost effective. Your new shed looks fantastic and those jerseys are beautiful. Of all the bovines jerseys, highlands and bison are my favourites. Good luck, not that you really need it because I can see you know what you are doing and you are doing it well. Best wishes 🇨🇦❤️

Similar thing happened to me years ago (mid 70's) outskirts of London/Essex. In the middle of a storm, the house across the road, was struck by lightning, (the Chimney) as I was just looking at what was going on! The noise was, as you say, just like a bomb had gone off. You could feel the air pressure change in those few seconds. It was really scary. The damage done inside the house was exactly like a bomb hit.

Your video's are amazing, they really do entertain and educate My journey to you was as accidental as your farming journey Suffering ill health for 6 years, finally found youtube last Oct. Saw Jemma Warren vid, so went back through her back catalogue. That introduced me to Olly Blogs, as you can imagine, it took me time to catch up with his back catalogue lol. From there he mentioned Tom Pem and you, I've watched all your vids, now on to Tom, currently a year behind on his. Now I'm subscribed to all your channels and look forward to Answer as a %, Good Morning and Morning Children You brighten the dullest days "Love you long time, catch you next" time 😊

Charlotte, I wholeheartedly agree, about people who whinge and decry the state of things, but if they don't take part in things, then their views aren't heard. It's like not voting and then complaining about how things are done. If you want to change things, then get involved it's as simple as that. Good luck with how things are going too.

New concrete is renowned for giving any cows slight foot probs charlotte, due mainly for that rougher texture- why cows move, pivot about the feet don't move aswell, can cause the skin between the claws to split, allowing infections into the tissue between the claws- foul as its called if an infection does develop or possibly white line problems- foot bathing will help basically kill off any bacteria etc. Jerseys do have v hard feet, but as any cow, need managing to help avoid these things happening. So yea youre totally correct foot bathing, formalin or copper sulphate. Prevention is better than cure, but at some point some feet will need trimming, a block applying etc. So that's when you need a foot crush and somebody who knows how to correctly treat feet. It's a skill not easily to do, especially if you are totally green to it.

more sawdust will equal more expense........it's all those little things that add up to your cost of production........i know i keep saying it but get them out as soon as you can otherwise next winter will soon be here.... a little tip about A.I- ing your cows......if you had a bull with the cows he would be serving the cows when there standing still but when you A.I them its better to wait they reckon 12-15 hours after there standing still so in other words if they're bulling in the afternoon /early evening A.I them the next morning......if there romping around after there A.I'ed they generally don't get pregnant......A.I in general isn't as good at getting them pregnant as a good bull is but theres other advantages......i still use A.I on my cows......my advice would be to always go for a easy calving bulls......we use Genus and they do calving surveys on all there bulls that they use. your not thinking of growing a couple of fields of Maize then in those fields your spraying or is Maize not grown up your way.......perhaps your too high up
