I have the same model (or close to it) with the carbon fiber shaft and Line IQ. I’ve been very impressed with the power and the ease of not having to mess around with mixing fuel. One thing I’m not a fan of, though, is the Line IQ. The sensor (or whatever voodoo magic makes the line know when to advance), lets the line get far too short for my liking before letting out more line. At first blush this seems like not a big deal….just move in a little closer, right? Ah, but here’s the kicker….you’re not only losing reach, I believe that you’re also losing SPEED. The tip of 16 inches of line is moving much faster than the tip of 7 inches of line. More speed at impact means more POWER. It’s simple physics. You can tell the difference between how much more power it seems to have when the line is fully extended than when it’s worn down to its shortest point. And the difference is significant. And there’s no way to advance it yourself, you just have to wait until the Line IQ decides to give you more line. I find myself feeling frustrated with the performance. Then wham, all of a sudden you get more line and it’s tearing through the thickest grass like a champ again. Personally, I’d rather control this myself. So after using it for a full season last summer, I got annoyed with it and swapped it out for an Ego bump head. It was an easy swap. I’m much more pleased with the consistency of the performance now. I suspect I’ll go through a little more line this way, but I think it’s a much better tool now. And the power load (which I love) still works the same. Just my observation

@@ut1004bp I had a bunch of plain string from my previous trimmer but the power load feature doesn’t seem to engage properly with it and I have trouble reloading. So I bought a spool of .95 twisted line and that loads fine, no problem. I think the plain string is just a little too stiff and the head just won’t grab it properly. The twisted line is more flexy. Still more satisfied with the bump head. I don’t think it was an issue of the Line IQ auto feed not working properly….I think it works exactly as designed. I just don’t like how short it actually gets before it feeds out. It’s like working with two different trimmers, and you never know what moment it will suddenly feed out. I prefer controlling that myself.

EGO nailed it with this trimmer! It's light, balanced, and has plenty of trimming power. No more bumping and I love the Line IQ feature. Just like in your video, I was able to keep trimming without stopping. I kept feeling the need to "bump" the trimmer when the line got low, but the trimmer adjusted to the perfect length each time. Even in the vertical position the line would advance. I love the new trigger safety as its smooth and quick. I haven't had the need to load more line, so I haven't tried the autoload feature yet. This is by far the best trimmer I've ever purchased!!

Having a line sensor is such a great improvement over previous methods of auto feed. Black and Decker uses a centrifugal method, which ultimately fails, and feeds line constantly, and a reel lasts only for minutes. EGO rocks! If EGO ever goes public, I would buy their stock.

I bought one last week and used it for the first time this weekend. Before this, I had a dedicated Sthil edger and Echo string trimmer. I used the EGO for edging, trimming, and basically as a lawn mower for the back yard which doesn't have grass. Still getting used to the LineIQ. When it feeds more line, there's a bit of a jerk to one side, which can be an issue if you're trimming in a tight area or if you want precision. I finished the yard with probably about 40% of battery capacity remaining. Overall, it does a great job and I'm highly considering having it replace my gas powered edger and trimmer. I will say the batteries are expensive, so long-term, you may not be saving much money compared to a string trimmer. But also consider the cost of tune-ups and adjustments on your gas trimmer, as well as gas storage.

Thank you for the review. The strap actually is included in my unit when purchased as a kit with the 4.0Ah battery and the new 320W low profile charger. Coming from Black & Decker's cordless trimmer I bought the EGO carbon fiber unit with PowerLoad first few years ago and loved it even though it was too long for my height. Six month later, I bought the multi-head for multiple tools and also got the trimmer thinking of replacing the carbon fiber unit; however, this combination is heavy and uncomfortable to use especially it spins counter-clockwise that I have to stand on the right side of the trimmer and use the left hand to hold the trigger to avoid debris. When I saw the introducing of this new EGO 16" telescope carbon fiber with both PowerLoad and Line IQ I was excited. I have been missing the AFS (Automatic Fee Spool) feature on the Black & Decker trimer since I got the EGO. I got this new trimmer last week, assembled it and the ergonomic and weight balance fits perfectly for me (though I still miss the metal guard that Black & Decker puts on their trimmer to prevent trimmer line damage) so, both the carbon fiber and the multi-head trimmer attachment are now listed for sale 😉

4 out of 5 stars for me for my ST1623T... The sight line while looking down at the head for edging is very bad. Causes some very uneven cuts because the IQ head is a bit large and you can't see exactly where the line is cutting. My little Echo gas trimmer's string guard is cutaway so you can see what you are doing easily. EGO needs to make another string guard for this model for sure.

  • @zaineridling

IT DOES WORK WITHOUT THE GUARD! However, if you remove the guard, it will extend the line but only so far. You will need to carry a small wirecutter to trim your line back. This Line-IQ feature did not work as I expected. You only get 5.25" of line on each side, because the (5-inch) trimmer head is included in the 16-inch width. Worse, Line-IQ only extends/cuts to the longest side of string. So, if one side is longer than the other, it's going to extend to the longest side every time, leaving the other side short. Also, Line-IQ has a mind of its own, meaning it will unreel more line when it's ready; there's nothing you can do to manually unreel more line. You just have to wait on it. This was a source of frustration, and wasted my time. I LOVE EGO, but the trimmer is a tool for which I need as much control as possible. For now, I'm back to my model 1521S (2021).

Yep, biggest issue so far. Since line iq is software controlled, you're at mercy for whenever it decides to spit out more line. In my case, specifically annoying as all hell. As i was doing my fence, the line got down to 2 inches each side, yet....5 mins of running the motor, still trying to cut, stopping/starting, it still refused to spit line out. Resulting in a very suboptimal job and cut. Really disappointing. A very easy and incredible way to fix it (and future proof) is to just add another button by the speed setting that automatically tells the software on the trimmer to spit out more line on demand. Because clearly the line 'iq' still got teething issues.

The IQ system on mine is very annoying It doesn't feed until the lines are less than 3" in length, and then it feeds up to 12 inches resulting in big chunks of wasted line laying around when the excess is cut off. It spends the vast majority of cutting time with only ~3" of line sticking out. I would much rather just bump feed, but EGO tells me you can't convert from IQ to bump feeding.

Hey guys I’m having an issue with the Line IQ feature and I’ve heard it from several people. When using the trimmer in areas that I am going to be eating up more string, the new string does not feed properly at all, it lets me get down to about 3-4 inches and stays there for a solid 3 minutes before finally feeding another 4 inches of line out. I am trying to decide if this is something that they just haven’t figured out yet with the feature or if I have a bad sensor. To give some perspective, when I am edging with the trimmer near the road, the trimmer only replaces my quickly disappearing string every 5 minutes or so, and at that point I am all but rubbing the head on the road trying to keep trimming while I wait for it to feed. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me! Thanks!

I was thinking about that as well; however, after a close study the Line IQ head and my current carbon fiber PowerLoad head I would say that EGO did a good job to make sure it is quiet complicated to swap the head out even though the motor housing are the same size. For the price differences, it would be more economical and require less effort for me to sell my current carbon fiber unit after a thorough clean up with a new trimer line as well as selling the new 4.0Ah battery and the 320W charger from the Line IQ kit than tinker my current unit with new head and new deeper protective cover. It was a tempting thought; however, I still need the telescopic feature as well even if I am able to replace the head. I have retrofitted LM2102SP and LM2142SP into Select Cut as well as swapping out the rubber auger with a metal auger on single stage units; however, I am going to pass this one on. Do share if you are able to retrofit your current trimmer with the Line IQ though. 👍

I looked for this at Lowes and the package with battery and charger is listed at $499 which seems way too much for a trimmer for a small property. Not sure if the $299 price is American????

Very nice, but i have the previous EGO that suffer from all the problems that IQ solve, can i have just the head ? Elseway i'm ready to toss my actual EGO as the bump load works 1 out of 10, every 10 mins. Every time i clean my head, i get 20 mins of "great" usage, before it start to have problems. I want a new head or a new trimmer. But i'm scared to buy EGO again, but this seems cool.

@@enitalp Seriously, every trimmer I have ever used have problems with bumping and getting the string to advance. I personally look forward to trying this bumpless trimmer. I am tired of my Ryobi not cutting as good as they advertised and having to bump the head multiple times to get the string to advance far enough to cut itself. Plus the loading! I never want to go back to trying to take the heads apart and pulling out spools without losing springs and washers just to have to try to wind line around them and then reverse the process..

For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. kzread.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
