Amel do make incredible well build and designed boats, which all through is designed to be safe vessels for living onboard as well, which is of course also the reason, why maybe the most famous sailing channel sail and old Amel. The mid ship pilot house and also solid sea railings is just such great features. In this boat though Amel has caved to popular demand and made island berths, even in the forward cabin too. That is not wise decision, which all sailors would know: Try to sleep in that in a monohul sailing in rough seas or even at a rolly anchorage, and you would soon sea, what I mean! It is a good thing to have a wall to sleep next to in a boat this size. The only real problem for Amel is the pricetag really. For this kind of money you for instance can buy a Windelo 54 catamaran, a performance catamaran even, but still with copious space and great design features and hybrid drive system and massive battery banks and solar included. I only really can find one argument for choosing an Amel or any monohul really over that, and that is, if you need to dock often in Europe, where catamarans is not always accommodated. Still, the older Amels are also very well build, often well maintained by loving owners and sometimes you can find some at incredible prices really, as nothing less than three Amel 54 for sale in Europe right now in perfect sailing condition for about 450k Euro. That is not bad at all!

Die 50. sind zur Zeit wohl die interessanteste Klasse. Nirgendwo sonst werden gerade so viele neu durchdachte Konzepte auf den Markt gebracht, dass der Interessent es schwer hat, sich zu entscheiden. Die Amel ist darunter - wie sie sich auch der Werbung präsentiert - das Boot für die Familie auf Langfahrt mit noch kleinen Kindern: geschütztes Cockpit und viel Platz für unterschiedliche Nutzung unter Deck. Eine echte Marktlücke.

On the portside behind the companionway there is a HUGE compartment that is shown on layout maps as just a grey square. It's not the bathroom for the master cabin, not some other room. What is there? Engine room and helm position?

Bois massif ou placage standard comme dans les bateaux de série ? Ce bateau semble avoir des atouts notamment à l'extérieur bien soigné, mais il manque de caractère. Je préfère le style Amel 54 avec cockpit bien protégé, ketch, intérieur style marin et tous les espaces exploités. Même les super maramu 2000 ont de beaux atouts et on se sent vraiment dans un bateau, bref c'est un avis.

The windows on the for deck face forward which is the direction of movement therefore the sea spray or a large wave could enter them. Why do they not open toward the stern?

@@nojtom That is to assume that in all circumstances the people could close them and in sea faring all possibilities must be covered. Open ports facing forward is a risk that ought not be there.

@@didboy74 I have heard they increased the capacity and introduced a new model in the 40-feet range. So I would think their order-delivery time must be comparable to comparable brands. As far as I know, they built-to-order unlike BeBaHaJe (Benetteau-Bavaria-Hanse-Jeanneau) crowd who are said to always have some boats in the build-pipeline.

I think the French designers of this boat were unaware that sailboats heal when sailing. This is more of a motor boat than a sail boat!

@@fulviof.9450 The salon and cockpit are wide open with few hand holds. The steering station is impracticable on a heeled boat. It reminds me of Maltese Falcon that on its first off shore trip, the head sinks were designed with a shallow end toward the front. When the boat heeled over, the water in the sink would spill out. The crew used the toilet for washing. This is not a proper design for an offshore sailing yacht of this size. Look at the design of a similar sized Oyster for a more appropriate interior and cockpit.

Mel’s are bulletproof go around the world, serious bluewater cruisers not a motor yacht. Oysters are also very heavy displacement with a different approach. The engine access is perfect example of a boat that was designed for sailors that are serious about boating. How about the window to see the prop? For coastal/marina cruising!
