Yesterday Kids Help Phone announced that 1 in 5 Canadian youth have seriously considered suicide in the past year. I'm neck deep in another project right now, but I wanted to take a moment to speak to this. Mental health must be considered on the same level as physical health. One step toward that would be having a kind of 911 number that is specifically for mental health emergencies. Toll free numbers are great but they fall short in that people can't easily recall them. Having a easily recalled three digit number would be greatly helpful not just for mental health sufferers in crisis, but for the bystanders who might be able to effectively help if they had a number they could remember and call. I wrote a little piece about it. I didn't have time to do a fancy video or put together music, but the subject is important to me and I couldn't say nothing. Hopefully I can revisit it someday and properly dedicate myself to it. Audio is attached if you prefer to listen.
One in five
today one in five
wondered if being alive
was worth the cost
of another day
wondering if 2 in 10
wondered when
there was finally going to be
a 911 for mental health
4 in 20 wondered if the wealth spent on the self decided salaries of politicians
who claim the children are our future
could pay for it
maybe 1 of the 8
of the 8 in 40
quit wondering
and started making plans
maybe 3 of the 16
of the 16 in 80
feel like unrecycled cans
that are just easier to throw away
Maybe one fifth of 160
is easier to say than 32
because 32 is starting to sound like a lot
a toll free number is not enough
give us a number
everyone knows by heart
so the next time we see someone's world falling apart
we can do more than just stand there
because the scars we can't see
require different care than the ones left there by crime or by accident
sometimes there's no hint
to tell you where it hurts
it just hurts
sometimes our minds are red alerts
you can't see
even when you look us in the eye
sometimes we cry for what others would consider no reason
sometimes the treason we commit
is against ourselves
it's hard enough
trying to find who we are
amid the overcrowded shelves of pills
meant to manage how we function
sometimes the junction box is broken
and we miss the connections
that others seem to make with ease
imagine
if you threw away the 1
of the 1 in 5 keys
that could open the door
to the room the world forgot we were locked in
if kindness makes us friends
let compassion make us kin
don't let us get lost in the numbers again
illness is illness
sometimes the cost to heal it
is an ear willing to listen
sometimes a shoulder
volunteering to be a crutch
people are not a price to be weighed against your budget
1 in 5
is 2 much.

20% we ignore a 20% chance of rain and when people ask if will rain we say no when you bet on the green slice of the 5-sliced color weel you never expect it to land on blue its only a one in five chance. it is not significant who knew 20% could be so unfathomably large

The strange happenstance that you released this video on the same day that I was going to end it all. And I know with a name like DOSmile, I should, but I can only manage to ask of others to "Please, DO-Smile". I'm an Army Veteran and I just wanted to say thank you for your eloquent words that reach parts of me that have been long buried under the mass of pain and sorrow so overwhelming that I'd rather not feel anything at all. This gives me hope. Thank you. ^_^

I don't live in Canada but I have considered suicide i think 6 times in the last 2 years. 3 ended with attempts and the rest end in the scars on my arm. A 911 for mental help would be...helpful.

If kindness makes us friends, let compassion make us kin. Dont let us get lost in the numbers again. llness is illness, sometimes the cost to heal it is an ear willing to listen, sometimes a shoulder volunteering to be a crutch.... I was in the same boat as you, suicidal. My brother jumped off a bridge while drunk, probably thinking it was like a swimming pool. Everyone around me was dying or leaving me. And I was suicidal for a long time, til one day I met a beautiful girl in which has been my friend for 7 years now. She saved my life, made me feel as if my life meant something. She listened to my pain, gave me her shoulder to stand on.. And if you'd like, I could be that for you. Sometimes, just talking to someone about your struggles takes so much weight off your shoulders.

Your led me to speak about my feelings and diverted my path to death. This was amazing! I work in a group home and I think I am going to show this to the people I work with. Sometimes we forget that mental health is just as important as physical health. I am always asking my kids at work how they are doing and I keep telling them they can always talk to me about anything. If you are open to talk about Mental health and just listen youth tend to want to speak. We just have to listen and not just sit there. We have to actively listen to them. Mental Health isn't a taboo subject we should be able to talk about it.

Thank you, thank you. I am terrified I am going to lose the mediocre care I get now, because then what? It's like they just want us to go away, disappear, leave the state so we are off their budget and on some place else's. I would if I could but I don't see how it would make any difference at all. Illness is illness. Mine is chronic, with a chance of terminal, and living where I do - they want us gone even if it's death, suicide by blade, or tall building or cop. I promised my dog I won't, but it's still so hard.

I have been a long time fan, and your spoken truth is what helps me keep going. I used to write like this, before all the drugs Ive had to take for 20+ yrs stopped my muse from speaking. If I wasnt so shy & self conscious, this is my dream job, to have the power to move ppl like you do. I now struggle to survive each day, hoping maybe some day I can get to a place where I can hope for a life instead of a pointless, hopeless existence waiting to die likely before I ever escape here...

My best friend, who I have known for years, lives in Canada, and as a kid, he was seriously depressed and suicidal. I love your work so much, I found you this October, and I have a disorder, in which it's almost impossible to cry... but for the first time in years, I had cried. Your stories are touching, and so relatable, to the point that I want to give you a hug... so I could see that other side of me. Thank you for your dedication, and service. I know the chances of you reading this is about equal to my level of self-esteem. Every time ppl learn about poetry imma jus tell them all teachers, students.. to listen to Shane, especially To This Day.. I still listen to that *To This Day* because I can relate to everything he freakin says.. ya that's sad but it's true and the last message is something I always needed and I'm still going thro crap and i still need that message.. I swear if my teacher didn't listen to that to this day poem she missed out on something beautiful and something everyone needs to hear...

I'm very glad I can live in a world where this man exists. His poems are truly amazing and deserve to be shouted from the rooftops until the whole world can hear and think about what they've done.

I just want to say that as a poet myself, you have been my biggest inspiration since I discovered your work. My teacher introduced me to your pieces and I absolutely love each one. You're my hero and always will be.

Shane I'm so glad you posted again you're an inspiration and you saved my life with "To This Day" and for that i am forever grateful. You're one of the few people who aren't afraid to talk about real issues such as depression, bullying, and suicide. Without your poems, I probably wouldn't be here anymore, so I say thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I hope one day you read this.
