Today I was in Walmart looking at a chef's knife that costs just 99 cents. they will cut, but it is nice to have something that is dependable and of a lot better quality.

the US military has a tendency to heat treat to a low HRC on their 1095 (54-56 HRC) As such, it is less likely to chip. But if you put to sharp of an angle an the blade, you will get chips. Also the civilian market will often kick that HRC up to 58-60 and at that point the 1095 will become more brittle and be more likely to chip especially when you put to acute an angle on the edge.

What IS a good angle to sharpen those 1095 (or similar) bigger blade knives? Like, say the SRK, the BK2, the Gerber LMF, the Ontario SP10, that kind of thing? 25 degrees? More? A convex edge might be ideal, but it's not easy to do in the field.

I like the look of the Esee blade shape, and the the warranty is worth spending more along with being USA made. I believe the rule of a fixed blade that hovers in the length around ten inches is truly the most versatile. Having a full tang is a popular desire point people look for too. I have an old Cold Steel Master Hunter USA made and it sure looks like an Esee 5 with a Kray-Ex handle. The blade is a tad shorter at four and five eights and has a 5-mm thick blade. The blade steel is Carbon-V steel said to be a super refined secret Cold Steel blade steel. Cold Steel made a testing video on a VCR tape I watched. They cut cardboard with one for a 24-hour day using three people cutting cardboard. It still was sharp enough to shave hair at the end. So, I don’t use that one much, but I saw my friend pull his thru the sternum of Buck and it did nothing to the blade edge. I used mine for a couple of deer but didn’t split open any sternum bones, it is still sharp as new and I like looking at it, knowing what it can do. 🐯😳😆😅

Those are some nice carry choices👍I carry folders alot more than fixed blades, unless I'm hunting or camping. The fixed blades that I carry the most are the Buck 119 special, the Buck 113 ranger skinner, Cold Steel SRK, Mora craftline robust carbon, and the ESEE Izula 2. Cheers, buddy!

Haha, I couldn't sleep at night if I didn't "take care" of a chip in the blade either loose the edge and resharpen or toss the knife. But having a chip there would drive me insane. Agree with you about Esee, great knives, I carry the Izula 2 often even with a pocket knife. For processing firewood I use a Schrade schf9 or KaBar BK2, for projects around the home a Western W36 and several I have stashed for "utilitarian" purposes. BTW I picked up the CS SRK in orange based on your say so and I love it. It's one of those "stashed".

I'm Jealous. I wish I had pulled the trigger when those orange SRK's were on sale. I went sniffing around for one, lately, on Midway, and they now want $55.

I'm up to 4 ESEEs. My biggest is the JG-5. I have the smaller ESEEs mainly because I have so many other large knives that fill the job of the larger ESEE knives. The one that I carry the most, currently is the ESEE Candiru you can't get much smaller in an ESEE. I could see picking up a ESEE 4. I think it would be the most useful for me but I have the JG-5. Don't bother choosing the Candiru for mumbly-peg. It's way to light to throw and stick, especially if you cord wrap the handle. LOL!

I have been thinking about the Esee Izula 2 quite a bit, but I have so many other blades in that same size range. It makes it hard to spend the money.

I love what you have done with that orange SRK, but the chip on the SRK-C does hurt my soul. Could you take that much off with the Worksharp belt sharpener? That would also solve the problem of the edge dulling on the sheath. Also, If you have any nice Scandis, I'd love to see them. #ScandiKnivesMatter. Lately, I've been swooning over my new Joker Ember fixed blade.

Joker makes some good knives. The belt sharpener would take off that much and put a convex edge on it at the same time. I might get around to doing that as I do like a convex edge.

You mean to tell me that you have 4 Esee's but didn't have the sense to get at least one of them in orange and venom green? Congratulations, you have no sense of style.
