🌟 About this video
Did you ever smell a fragrance that smelt purple or red or green? There is an undeniable crossover of sensory experience when we smell perfumes, there are even entire categories of fragrances named green and blue. But there are also genetic conditions where people will smell something and literally see colours in response. This got me thinking, does my colour preference in clothing or home decor translate into a colour preference with the perfumes that I love and hate? To what degree is synaesthesia something that we all experience in a small way when we smell fragrances?
Here I talk about 15 colours and what we associate with each one in everyday life. I also talk about the emotional response that each color elicits in us and discuss each color's place in color theory. I tell you the fragrance notes and perfume accords that I associate with each of the 15 colours and try to give examples of fragrances that smell each colour to me.
Do you experience fragrances as colours? Do you think you have experienced any form of synesthesia? Do you have a strong color preference in fragrance? Have you noticed that particular perfume bottles reflect their perfume's scent profile?

Hi Claire! 💖 I definitely "think" of colors when I smell fragrance, almost like a painting that emerges in my mind. I cannot say it's to the point where I can claim synesthesia as the reason. What an interesting phenomenon! And how is it that kids have some form of it and it goes away as they get older! The human body is phenomenal!

I think a lot of us will have a mild synaesthesia and a few with have a more extreme version. I spoke to someone with synaesthesia and she was describing fragrances as smelling colours I would never have associated with the smells. I was really shocked. Apparently with number synaesthesia there's an association of the shape of the numbers and the colour associated. And from family studies, researchers have realised that the colours aren't taught, but inherent to the sensation of the individuals. It's absolutely fascinating.

@@dr.claire.perfume Oops! Sorry, Claire! My comment should say I "cannot" claim it's synesthesia. More so that I just get loose associations with colors like a painting. Sorry for the typo!

Aah ok! I do think it's probably more common in people who love fragrance than in people who don't for sure. I also think there's a association with people who are easily overstimulated by noise and tastes too, i.e people who experience sensory overload.

Such an interesting concept I think black can be mysterious and ethereal like a night sky (pure without light) For me, a patchouli/plum fragrance could go there or a black orchid/patchouli (like film noir) Color is a spectrum with both positive and negative associations

Yes, I seem to love purple flowers. I love lavender and violets. I love white flowers too especially tuberose and jasmine, but I really seem to love the purples. I also seem to love yellow flowers especially Ylang-Ylang. Which I have always loved and I used to buy pure essential oil of it just to smell it's warm sweet magic. I used to mix this oil with sandalwood into a carrier oil and wear it as perfume. I did this because I assumed perfume would be to synthetic for my skin which is very sensitive. Luckily I can wear perfume, carefully placing it on tougher areas of my skin. I also just purchased Love Osmanthus which I really like. My favorite citrus is lemon but I also love bitter orange. I'm crazy about amber in a base along with spices other than pepper which I hate. So purple, yellow maybe orange or golden and white seem to be things I like. It makes a nice pallet of color being somewhat complementary. Blue used to be a girl's color and pink for boys, but really all babies and young children of the upper classes used to wear white, maybe because it could be bleached? Babies are messy LOL. I love a grapey smelling lavender, but I hate mysticism etc, being a science fan. Carl Sagan's pale blue dot quote (from his book) along with voyagers dot in a sunbeam photo, is hanging in my hallway and a watercolor by Darwin in my bedroom. My bookshelves are filled with mostly the sciences, history of the people (not the rulers), philosophy, and art books.

Yes, I think I am similar with loving ylang ylang now and also purple florals like violet and lilac as well as the white ones. I really love particular types of amber too, particularly spicy ones or golden feeling ones. ☺️ The switching between which colours are associated with different sexes is really not clear cut. Our modern associations feel ingrained but it's clearly changed many times! I love hearing about people's beliefs but yes I'm a scientist at heart so I don't really have any thoughts in the supernatural direction. Thanks for watching 🥰

After watching so many KZread reviewers I realized that many of them must be getting mental pictures when then smell scents. I think for me, only certain fragrances trigger images. Some just are so uninspiring that I struggle to talk about anything but the notes. Hello Claire, I also think of colours when I smell fragrances. I'm not a synaesthete though because if I was it wouldn't necessarily match something tangible and I would even literally see the colours maybe. The interesting thing is that with some perfumes I immediatly and vividly see a colour (or colours), whereas other perfumes will evoke a thing, or a memory, or a feeling in the first second the whiff hits my brain. I'm quite attracted to orange evoking perfumes, a hot colour, but scents that are fresh, or lukewarm most of the time. I must say I like white clothes although I don't wear many of them for practical reasons, and I also like white flowers in perfumery a lot. I like all types of scents but I particularly enjoy clarity and vividness in my fragrances. I'm fascinated by the crafmanship of glass, and I like perfumes that give me the impression of vivid colours, like looking at coloured glass in the light 🙂

Argh no!! This video reminded me of an enormous disappointment in my life a few years before the pandemic. I found out that a gallery/museum in London was hosting an evening social event centred around fragrance and synaesthesia. They were making coloured cocktails with certain fragrances added at the bar and you were to taste them blindfolded, trying to assess what colour you thought they were based on smell and taste alone. That sort of thing. All night they had these fantastic interactive round-robin experiments and things to keep people socialising, talking and learning. My idea of fun, as opposed to sitting in a pub nursing a G & T and making small talk with people I don't care much about. As usual, I missed the event and only found out about it posthumously. Argh. I found your video here fascinating. A late condolence, much appreciated. 😄💯

@@dr.claire.perfume I've observed that fragrance lovers fall into three distinct categories:1) Autistic obsessive who has fallen into fragrance as their 'thing' of choice but it really could be anything, 2) someone who has always been hyper sensitive to fragrances of every possible kind in life-- their brains are wired a certain way (musicians are like this; music is in everything and everywhere and they naturally understand it) and lastly 3) Just someone who likes fragrances from shops/direct from manufacturer in the same way someone loves Korean skin care and the social media world built around it but that's as far as their sophistication goes. It's not in their bones. I fall into the second category. I offer this light hearted, off the cuff categorisation with my tongue in cheek of course.

Pink and purple quickly spring to mind with certain floral fragrances, but generally colors don't pop to mind for me. I've always wanted to do this idea for a video, but it wouldn't have been as interesting and informative as this. I'm always attracted to colours as a means and point of reference for so many things, including scent. I love each example of each colour, and the fragrances notes and actual named perfumes to match to each colour. Should add that I'll happily eat my food from a blue plate without any dissuading or question 😅😅 If i get any time at all this year i would love to piggyback on this idea, and perhaps talk about fragrances that match each colour from my own collection. It's such a lovely topic which totally sums up my preferences to fragrances. Brilliant claire, loved this. Will be adding it to my faves easy watching play list 😁 🤎❤️🧡💛💚💙🩵🩶💜🩷

I'm sure you will do an excellent job. I just love all of the associations we have with colours and how they can really influence what we perceive from smells. Fragrance in particular coloured bottles really leads you to think it will smell like that and it can be a shock if it doesn't! Niche bottles are often plainer so you have fewer expectations from them I guess. Definitely do your version with examples of each colour. I found when I was thinking about this that there were some fragrances that smelt one colour in the main and others that were more of a mix of a few, those were harder to sort out. Very interesting video Claire! I have seen TikTok videos about people with synesthesia, and it’s really fascinating! I don’t like the pure colour red- I even store my bottle of Glossier You on my tray without the red cap, I don’t display any of my red bottles and I don’t wear red, but my absolute favourite colour, especially in clothing, is a deep wine or plum, like mulberries. It’s like once you add that touch of dark purple, red goes from being my least favourite colour to my most favourite 😅 lol Nero Assoluto by Roberto Cavalli to me, smells like black. And anything with mimosa that reminds me of pollen definitely smells yellow to me!

love this video as i have always been fascinated by synesthesia. often, perfume evokes colors or multi colored images or objects for me. it's instantaneous. and some more than others i find. it's often difficult to put into words, but still a really wonderful side effect of perfume/scents i think.

Great video Claire! On a personal note, I love your foundation, what are you using skin care wise these days; you look glowing in a lovely and understated way! I think you are absolutely right on all this. I tend to think of pencil shaving perfumes as a dark brown probably bc it makes me think of mahogany wood and old vintage places. I'm curious what you think of Aerin scents. So many of them have that creamy, gardenia and skin like vibe to them so I think of them in light earth tones but my favorite Cedar Violet has that light green lid. I guess it makes sense with violet but it smells so warm and comforting to me, I just don't understand the cool green lid. Thank you again, brilliant thoughts as always. Been wearing a lot of lime, amber and almond cherry scents lately. All the best!

Thank you! I got a new phone back in July and I think it's more that honestly, the other one really wasn't great for filming at all. But I just use the ordinary retinol products and niacinamide with some occasional vitamin C. My foundation is super cheap and I do think in real life it likely looks less good, but it's Revolution Conceal and Define in F4. I have seen Aerin fragrances in store and I've always been curious, especially with the hype over hibiscus palm. The only one I have a sample of is amber musk, which I was really shocked at with the poor longevity for the price point, it's gone in about 30 mins! I will check out cedar violet next time I'm in store. 🙂 I think amber and cherry-almond fragrances are perfect for the autumn. Thanks for watching and have a fab week 🥰

Awesome video, greetings from New Zealand! I have total synesthesia when it comes to scents and colours (often actually seeing the colour flash before my eyes upon sniffing, regardless of the packaging hue). I gravitate towards pink (Roses Vanille is my signature scent), but I also like and wear red, gold and white scents. I cannot stand green (though I love the colour on me), yellow and blue (also love this colour on me) scents. I also used to be hypernosmic (even liking/disliking trusting/distrusting people because of their natural scent), before COVID19 messed with my olfaction... I still have a better sense of smell than the average person, but I'm devastated and still mourning the loss of my superpower, though I've done countless exercises to get it back... For context I could tell when people had cavities in their mouth (or when they had gut issues), I could smell the peppery scent that lingered when ants were squished, when females were on their cycle, and I could totally tell when people were unwell and did not know it because they didn't "smell like themselves"... like I said, devastating...

Or do you think it just makes you more sure of what you enjoy and what you don't? I think a lot of people can't smell very much at all, I work in a lab and often smell burning long before others. What a great video! My favourite colour since I can remember is purple (and its variations). I associate the smell of lilac, grapes(rather something grape- soda-like than the fruit itself) and violet/iris/powdery with purple. As for the occult side, I'm not really into that, but I do associate incense with purple. I think this is the only correlation I make that's based on an idea rather than an actual purple object. I think my love for purple isn't strongly reflected in any aspect of my life. I am very attracted to anything purple, but I rarely act on it. Maybe I should do it more often 😀

Hi Claire! Loved this video as always. I think it's hard to not be aware of colours when you're into perfumes, given as you note here that the bottle design is really a persons first impression of the scent, even before they've smelt it. So I tend to find it jarring when I don't think the scent and the bottle go together - I wonder if you'd do a video on that? Maybe 5 perfumes where you think the bottle perfectly encapsulates the scent, and 5 where you find a real disconnect between the two. A recent one that I find odd is JPG's Divine, I really love the fragrance but I find the bottle (very golden and warm) makes me think of something very different - I think the scent is supposedly solar but I don't get that from it at all, so just think it's odd. I realised that even though I adore tuberose and know it's a white flower, I have no idea what colour I'd imagine it as - it's often so strong and vibrant in perfumes that I wouldn't ever actually associate it with white, it would have to be something much more colourful and joyful!

  • @dr.claire.perfume

    @dr.claire.perfume

    9 ай бұрын

Thank you ❤️ oh yes 🤣 Gaultier Divine is maybe a light aqua blue or even a very pale peachy pink to me I think. It's definitely not golden. What colour do you see it as? I agree that coloured bottles that don't match with the scent profile are very very jarring. If you have an expectation and it's not fulfilled or entirely missed, there's an issue immediately and it can take a lot to bring it around. The fragrance has to be amazing to get over that. Tuberose is a big one, it can be lots of different colours to me depending on how it is used. It can even be purple or golden, as well as green and white! Thanks for watching and your insightful comment as always! 🥰

A great idea for a video and yes I think we truly smell colours. Yes with Red, the danger and passion things are deeply related aren't they. It will definitely add to that appeal but in scents I think it's one that will suit certain moods and occasions. Pink, yes like red a traditionally "masculine" colour. Blood and war. And actually a pretty modern colour named after the flower. One that was known as rose traditionally. Probably why it was also linked to romance. I'd say I have a good few pink smelling ones. Orange is a strange colour, I love it with dark colours, it's quite warm then. Maybe the autumn connection. I'm not a fan of fresh or bright orange. Yellow, again it's a weird colour isn't it. I think in my mind it conjures old fashioned. You don't really see many folks in yellow nowadays. In fragrance, yes I like yellow, mimosa, ylang-ylang and the tropical ones. Ray-flection certainly is the yellowest of yellows. Gold isn't a colour I really like. Maybe honey and ambers and resins. White is also a colour I'm not a fan of. It's very cold and like you say empty. I also have aversions to milk and snow 😅. But I do love my white florals. Cream also is not a colour I love. Weirdly I find RIL kinda red but that maybe the almondy vibe. Like you say that's the brilliance that we all smell different things. Yes green, along with blue the traditional colours of "feminity" due to the connections to nature and "mother" earth. I do struggle with greener notes. Silver again is not a colour I like, though I do love grey, probably the colour I wear the most. Yes iris can be very silver. Blue, yes that traditional female colour until the late 19th Century and blue sailor boy outfits. And yes with the herbs, clary sage and rosemary make me think of swimming pools

Brown is a strange one isn't it. I'm with u with the death and decay. It is warm maybe but it does make me think of dank and damp. Definitely patchouli. Black is an interesting one. I have those associations only with green fragrances, all the others I got with my perfume journey throughout the years. I have a music and sound variety in my brain instead. For example the sour notes, like some forms of moss and lemons, sour berries (like in Meliora PDM) sounds like the high piano notes. Some amber sounds to me like chello, woods are often reminiscent of drums of different kind. Some very complex compositions are storming my brain with symphony, others sound like pop music. The most misunderstood color for me is red, I get if the deep roses are in there, or cherry, but not smth like BaccaratRouge.

  • @beaver6d9

Such fascinating stuff! I certainly have a visualization component to abstract sensations like smell, taste, and sound. I secretly have a music degree, and having some kind of mental visual component is pretty standard among my colleagues! Whether it's truly synesthesia or perhaps subconscious visual association from the deepest, darkest archives of your mind, I couldn't say. Probably a little bit of both, I'd imagine! As soon as you said "American grape" I immediately knew it had be our fake ass grape flavor, which probably has a fake ass grape scent. Based off of Conchord grape, a variety we don't generally even eat. I'm not a huge fan as you can imagine and apologize for anyone having to eat it or smell it as a result of our worldwide cultural influence. I think most of the world gets delicious mango as part of their standard flavorings and is mercifully spared from the pitiful pungent epitome of purple.

Thank you ❤️ I think synaesthesia is likely to be more common in some disciplines and music is very like to be one of them. I guess it might help with your expression or memory of music. It would be interesting to find out just whether there are more synaesthetes in music than elsewhere. Haha, we really don't have that flavour or smell here so I didn't know what it was until I smelt wanted girl by night! Then I realised. Here we have very big standard flavours. Mango would be a bit out there. Here it is blackcurrant for purple. Thanks for watching 🥰

Absolutely loved the vid. Very interesting that cinnamon makes you think of red! Valentine's cinnamon hearts perhaps? ❤😄 Pink is certainly roses for me too. And this may seem very strange, but although most of my upbringing was during the 90's aquatic era where everything for men was being marketed as blue (as well as the modern blue craze), once I became interested in raw materials, blue suddenly became the ONLY colour that I no longer see when smelling a fragrance. Really quite strange. Perhaps an unconscious rebellion of sorts? Then again, very little is inherently blue in nature, including both sea and sky. In a sense, it's literally the ultimate fantasy colour. Even purple I associate with methylanthraniliate. Gourmands for me are wavelengths between 580 to about 700 nm. 😄 With their corresponding deeper sound frequencies! 🧡 Once again, great video Claire!

I get what you mean about blue, I rarely smell it, even the hydra figue I'd say was more of a light olive greeny blue. "Blue" fragrances only make me think of blue because shower gels that smell like that are coloured blue. It's just associated through social conditioning I think. 😂

It really throws me off when the bottle doesn't match the smell in color. If I were to look for a clean, milky, elegant everyday scent, I would never stop at the Rolling in Love bottle in store and smell it. At least in the past I wouldn't have. I had never tested Hypnotic Posion edt in stores for the longest time, because I expected a red fruits scent. I just don't think of red when smelling or thinking of a creamy almond fragrance. Also, if a cake/cookie gourmand scent had a turquoise bottle, I would be hesitant to try it. I associate blues with aquatic smells, and there's nothing worse for me than an aquatic baked goods gourmand scent. Cinnamon normally is golden brown to me, the red association every now an then comes from Big Red chewing gum, when the cinnamon note smells similar to the gum.

  • @dr.claire.perfume

Yes, that's totally it with cinnamon, it's hot smelling, it's red, if it's powdery sweet and warm, then it's orangey brown 👌 I also find it super jarring when the bottle really doesn't match the fragrance. I agree that rolling in love doesn't figure for me either with the bottle colour. It's one that some people smell cherry in though, perhaps because of the almondy feel? I've no idea 🤣 Thanks for watching 🥰 have a fab Sunday ❤️

... I'm curious when the association does NOT match the color of the presentation or the color of the objects which the scent represents. Why does the opening of Le Male Le Parfum smell deep red when there's nothing deep red in the presentation or the scent. Why are blue fragrances called as such when the scent profile of Sauvage is nothing like YSL Y with is nothing like Blue de Channel or Gucci Guilty for men. The all work with a denim outfit but not jeans are blue. I don't think you need to be synaesthetic to make the association that strawberries, peppers, etc are red and therefore it's gotta be a red scent.
