Klein has a new hybrid pliers multitool of sorts. Looks cool. Crimp, strip, and bolt shearing all in one.

Love the occidental telecom pouch myself. I (crudely) put one of the toughbuilt clip systems on it, we will see how it holds up, so far so good 👍

Klein blue handled lineman’s pliers are the D213-9NE. In Klein’s 167 year history probably the most units sold. My first purchase when I worked for them in the early 80s. 9 inch. NE means New England for the jaw exterior form factor. This plier comes with classic Klein starter tool set for a reason. The D213-9NE is history’s predecessor to the Knipex Cobras which have also served me well since their intro.

Also the blue Klein diagonals can cut a ten penny nail. Good stuff.

Doyle from Harbor Freight sells extremely good pliers for very affordable prices. They have Knipex cobra copies that are a fraction of the price and I have personally used my set from apprentice to jdub and they work the same as day 1. Love USA made, Japan made or German made tools but the Taiwanese Doyles are great and don't break the bank.

Klein has a demo screwdriver also. I don’t know if the tip is any different than the screwdriver you showed but it does have the metal cap and has held up well for me. I usually use it for lock nuts but the tip is still flat enough to turn a screw.

I agree I don’t like 12 in one screwdrivers. I always run into situations where they don’t work. The bits fallout. When you need to use the nut driver you have to store the bit.

Westward demolition screw drivers are a great cheap option the hold up to hammering well Adjustable wrench I suggest the channellock 8WCB 8 inch wide azz it opens up past 1 1/2 inches The knipex wire strippers are great if you get the 82 8 6 in 1 they have the worst crimping I have ever used get the ones with out the crimping every other thing about the is great.

The pouch I use is occidental leather 5053 for main use/main tools and I’ll swap tools in and out depending on the task

I use a lot of knipex too… and yes i relate.

Man, honestly for sub-$20, those toughbuilt pouches are hard to beat. I’ve had 4, they’re all in great shape still (just dirty). Just buy a set of the extra clips. That’s the only failure point I’ve found in the 4-5 years I’ve been using mine. It’s usually the yellow tab/clip on the bottom won’t stay latched or one side of the clip itself will eventually start to crack. You know, usual plastic stuff. I do like the Knipex stuff. I use their snips (used Fluke snips for years), the cobra/water pump pliers, and just happened to see a pair of the 7~” pliers wrench and grabbed it a couple days ago. They’re on the pricier side for sure, but as long as you don’t lose them or someone “borrows” them I don’t see how they wouldn’t last for a long time. I’m primarily low voltage/datacomm though.

Looking at this Im glad I work in europe. I wake up when I want, use thools which I want, do do work that I want. End my day when I want. And don't have to fight stupid thick cables all the time :D We mostly deal with 1,5mm2 for light, and 2,5mm2 for sockets in residential. And 16A makes 3680W which is plenty and the wires stays stone cold. And I know that this Klein brand is well respected in US but can't help thinking that the designs are very similar, and remininding me a soviet times.

What about your Split head screw driver? I absolutely HATE IT but I NEED them and there's no other tools like it, it is such a pain for none magnetic screws.

Yoo dog, if you haven’t gotten the m12 surge yet you need to. It is the MOST essential thing ever. The m12 impact is a top notch, amazing and badass impact but the surge is just different. I might be behind the times and you already have one. However if you don’t have one you NEED it. The m12 impact is the best but the m12 surge is just a little better. I’ve never had it struggle on anything including some medium size lags. It’s so smooth and the peace and quiet is unmatched. I kid you not I live in a 888 square foot house me and my long term girlfriend bought. I mean this thing is small. Idk what the qualifications are to be considered a tiny house but I know my crib ain’t nothing but a haircut away from being tiny as hell. (I like it though. Keeps you from impulse buying because there is no room for anything. We can afford it comfortably and that means I have money to drive across the country to chase tornadoes. So it’s good for us.) Anyway what I was gonna say was a few weeks ago my GF was asleep in the bedroom and I was using surge in the little area between the kitchen and laundry room. Keep in mind this is 1 thin wall and MAYBE 15 feet from the bed and she didn’t hear a thing. I mean I wouldn’t say it is quiet in general but compared to standard impact it’s a big difference. In no way am I hating on regular m12 impact. It’s a great tool however you GOTTA try the surge if you haven’t. End rant.

If you are just starting off, I suggest to start at Harbor Freight and buy only the necessary tools. Reason I say this is because a lot of apprentices decide electrical isn’t for them and quit. So now they spend around $200 on tools compared to $600 on quality tools. They can even keep the harbor freight tools to do DIY projects around the house.

Yeah but at the end of the day they aren’t saving much money anyway. The HF utility knife is the same price as the fastback. Plus in the long run you’re only saving the ones who quit money and making the ones who stay pay more by buying tools twice

Hey man! I’ve worked for my dad for a few years but he’s retired now. I’ve done some schooling, and am still doing some. I’m on the waitlist for my local union apprenticeship program. It’s very competitive and may be a long time if/until I get in. I’m looking for other options, like non union apprenticeships. I’m going to start calling local companies and asking about potential apprenticeship opportunities. Do you have any other recommendations to help land me an apprenticeship?

Research each company you apply for, usually the medium sized family owned stuff is a healthy learning environment…

i have the flir detector but i can never get what i want from it. in a factory when i put it against a wire that is in conduit with a bunch of other wires at 480v it will beep on every wire in that bundle if only a few are hot. so to me it's basically useless. have to check with my fluke ,meter

Anyone watching this know you CAN get Knipex tools without the insulated grip, for the same price (or less) as/then Klein tools! Channelock, Husky, Commercial electric, Crescent, tough built, all make great, decent hand tools. You will figure out when you have to splurge and on what!

The insulated grip is usually the same price as their comfort grip

25 year election. I was in my 50’s the first time I heard someone called them water pump pliers. They’re actually called tongue in groove pliers and slip joint is the old slang before we got lazy and called them by channel lock brand name.

I would not recommend the klein tape measures at all. Although they work well when they are in one piece, between 3 coworkers and I, I've seen 5 of them break in less than a year or in 2 instances in 3 weeks. Dewalt 25' magnetic tape has been my favorite so far. My first one was still going after 2 years of commercial electrical before getting buried 4ft deep in a service trench.

Do you not use an open pouch on you tool belt as well? For fittings, nuts, etc? I wear a full belt if I'm moving around a lot, but often just wear a clip on pouch if I can make that work. For warehouse and shop work I roll with a two level cart, for residential we set up a home base for all our supplies and extra tools, and for simple repairs and punch list I'll wear bags and just work out of the truck or van. Knipex makes great pliers. If you've never used their plier wrenches buy a 10" pair and it will change your world. Nothing else out there covers close. US made Klein and older US made stuff off ebay is great too.

How about Douglas pliers..for pipe

I will say, not all wire strippers do strip the same... some strippers have to be spun, wiggled and twisted in order to get all the way through the insulation. And its not that they are beat up or anything, i noticed right out of the box.

I totally agree. Garbage strippers will do that. As far as high quality strippers go tho they all strip the same

The tape measure holder is silly, and although I like the tools he uses and is suggesting the amount of money all of this costs is out of range for most apprentices, plain and simple start with the basics buy Klein starter kit and learn what everything is used for before you go blow $600 on hand tools and bags…

No way, commercial electric, at Home Depot, have full electrical hand tool sets for $30-$50 with all the drivers, pliers and a bag/pouch setup. It’s ridic and seriously good quality!

man I got doyle screwdrivers, lineman’s & klein insulated screwdrivers . Rest of my tools are a mix between klein & milwaukee i got what i need rn that knipex is expensive man 😂

It sounds weird but it’s right

A real tool bag is a necessity not a low volt scissor holding clip on bag that only holds 5 tools . Invest in yourself it’ll last you awhile and show others you love what you do if you spend good money on your equipment . A good apprentice is always ready with all his tools ready to tackle any task without having to run across the building for his shit or material.

DeWalt makes a better utility blade than the he showed more robust n durable

Knipex is way to expensive imo lol

@@americanelectriciani’m just messing with ya, knipex/wera/wiha are really nice… but i mostly stick with klein. haven’t tried any toughbuilt stuff yet, i’ve seen them in stores and thought they looked kinda gimmicky, sort of a tacticool vibe going on, but i’ll check them out a little closer.

It’s probably gloves. Some shops supply and require cut gloves. I spent the first half of my career with callused and scabbed up hands. Seems like just as one cut or scrape healed another would show up. I hated wearing gloves but didn’t like my hands tore up all the time. There are too many good ergonomic cut gloves out there to not wear them.

BUY INSULATED TOOLS!!!🪛✂️ You will be fine in 999 cases with no insulation, but that 1000th time could kill you. If I brought any non-insulated tools to the job when I was an apprentice, the electricians would snap, bend, and break the tools for me. DO NOT USE THEM.
