Me encantó la clase. Yo soy brasileño y vivo en España desde hace 4 años. Ya he oído algunas de esas expresiones y la que más me gusta es "que me parta un rayo". También, me gusta mucho "me importa un pimiento". Aquí, en España, normalmente oigo decir "pimiento" en lugar de "pepino".

En México se dice - "dar gato por liebre" - to swindle, cheat or otherwise rip someone off. "El vendedor me dío gato por liebre" The seller ripped me off.
I am grateful to have such a creative and brilliant Spanish teacher before I go to Spain in May of 2023.....thank you for all of these videos that you are posting!
Fue muy divertido, ¡Gracias! ❣ En Aleman usamos el dicho "no tener los pelos en la lengua" de la misma manera "keine Haare auf der Zunge haben" eso me sorprendí muchísimo porque no lo sabía antes de tu clase. También me sorprendí del dicho "Que me parte el rayo" que usamos también literalmente en Aleman "Möge mich der Blitz treffen".
I like this channel so much, Spanish is passion !

Mucho gusto, fabuloso.

Otra versión en inglés de eso podría ser "you can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig". Yo creo que méti la pata también es como "I put my foot in my mouth". Como cuando dices algo que sabes que no deberías haber dicho. Mantendré esta lección como un buen recurso y referencia. He usado en boca cerrada no entran moscas y hay que bailar a la música que se toca (presente) - "when in Rome do as the Romans" con frecuencia en el pasado.

Brenda, muchas gracias por un video de primera clase. Pero, has ometido mi frase preferida de todas. “Ser un cero a la izquierda.” En inglés se dice, “To be a waste of space.” (ser una pérdita de espacio). Significa ser inutil. Soy inglés, vivo a Londres, y cuando hablo con hispanohablantes, uso esta expresión para describir al alcalde de Londres, Sadiq Khan. Es un cero a la izquierda, no hay duda, pero ha ganado 2 elecciones. Qué lástima.

Hola Brenda. Acabo de ver este video la primera vez. Antes de descargar el .PDF puedo decir que "Meter la Pata" me parecía significar _To put one's foot in it_ exactemente. Per ejemplo: _I put my foot in it when I told him I'd not seen you - but he told John he'd seen us talking on the bus._
¡Hola, Brenda! ¡Qué divertida es esta lección! Es muy interesante descubrir que casi todo el mundo piensa igual. Me gusta "aunque el mono se vista, el mono se queda". Es similar en inglés; "Estás tratando de poner lápiz labial en un cerdo". ¡Y nunca me importa un pepino!✌

Hi Brenda! I love your channel and I watch many of your videos. I used "tirar la casa por la ventana" when I was inviting people to our 25th Wedding Anniversary party. My profile photo with tiara and evening gown shows that we spared no expense! Can I also make a suggestion? "Meter la pata" is the equivalent of the American English expression "to stick my foot in my mouth." I've used that one many times and it fits the situation in Mexico perfectly!!

I love this video ❤ Muchas gracias Brenda 😊 Here are some of my favorite quotes: Más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo (The devil knows more because he's old than because he's the devil.) Meaning: Experience and age often bring wisdom. El que mucho abarca, poco aprieta. (The one who tries to grab too much, holds too little.) Meaning: When you try to do too many things at once, you may not do any of them well. No hay mal que por bien no venga. (There is no bad from which good does not come.) Meaning: Every cloud has a silver lining; something positive can come from a negative situation. En boca cerrada no entran moscas. (Flies don't enter a closed mouth.) Meaning: Sometimes it's better to keep quiet and not say anything. Camarón que se duerme, se lo lleva la corriente. (The shrimp that falls asleep gets carried away by the current.) Meaning: If you're not alert or proactive, you might miss out on opportunities.

Gracias Brenda... Nos has educado mucho con todo esto !!! No se si nos ayuda mas, pero 30 years ago during my last few lessons while qualifying for my TEFLA certificate, we studied IDIOMS....and I was surprised and enlightened (!) to learn they have RULES ( I even bought a Cambridge University Press volume listing more than 5,000 in the English language!!) ¿Tienen los 'idioms' en Español algunas reglas también ? Aquí les ofrezco las de inglés (pues, las cuales que yo recuerdo!) 1) The idiomatic meaning cannot often be discerned from the sum of the component words ("It's raining cats and dogs"). That is to say, they are not 'literal' 2) Idioms can exist in any tense/aspect of time and grammatical time ("It rained cats and dogs") 3) You cannot change the individual words ("It's raining pigs and dogs") 4) You cannot change the word order ("It's raining dogs and cats") This wisdom later helped me when learning other languages :-) And of course.. most English Idioms (like many expressions) do not translate word for word into other languages.. .(or vice versa!) ......as we are discovering here today !!! Thanks Brenda x

Saludos, Brenda. 'Carlos es buena onda.' In the 60s and 70s we would have said something like 'Carlos gives out good vibes'. Hippy jargon. (The word 'cool' existed back then in more or less its current meaning - this meaning comes from jazz - but it wasn't ridiculously over-used like it is now. Linguistic impoverishment rules in the 21st Century).

Mona de seda is like "lipstick on a pig"
en checo, convertimos un cabro en un jardinero, o un cazador furtivo en un guardabosque por emplear sus experiencias enganandas en el buen lado del derecho - pero tambien usamos la misma frase por hablar de un burro hablando de orejas - si la persona no mejora su actitud en su nueva posicion. In Czech we employ the goat as a gardener and the poacher as a game warden to employ their former rule defeating expertise to protect the resources they previously preyed upon - but we use it to depreciate someone's chastising
