in 1967 my team were issued an 9" Bowie knife with our unit crest on the blade. I carried and used that knife in all of my 4 tours in Nam. I still have it to this day. Funny they don't mention it here. Maybe it was an experimental test issue, but it is a hell of a knife. Its blade is spring steel and once sharp it stays that way forever. I've never seen a knife that holds an edge the way it does.

I have been collecting knives for about 40 years. My comrades in the Homeland War in Croatia laughed when I came back from vacation with a different knife every time. I have ww1 and ww2 bayonets as well as modern daggers and knives and lots of folding ones. I love a good knife because it always comes in handy in every situation.

Let's make this simple. Folding knives are not the best for fighting or surviving. Most full tang fixed blade knives will be better. In a knife fighting situation reach matters as well because adding inches on the blade will only slow your movements a small fraction. When I was active duty I carried several knives (I collect weapons of all sorts) along with my Kabar and M-7 bayonet at different times, mostly different types of bowie knives. The most important thing was to practice so I bought a training bowie knife to use. The larger blade gave me more options especially the slap chop on the hand, wrist, throat of your attacker. I prefer larger blades because they make chores easier, have more than enough blade to deal a mortal blow, and they instill more fear than smaller knives do on most attackers. All my folding knives are used for is smaller jobs which is what they are best for from my experience.

I am an amateur knife collector and the Gerber Mark II is the very first blade I ever laid eyes on and coveted it instantly, and that was way back in the 1970s when I was a kid. I saw it and wanted it so badly I could taste it. No other Knives have had as powerful effect on me as the Mark II. Not even the Fairbairn Sykes is as aesthetically pleasing as the Gerber Mk II!

I’m going to put this out here a knife in a fight is only as good as the person wielding it if you’ve never done any sort of bladed combat training before you’re more likely to end up cutting yourself and injuring yourself then the other person!

Kukri, SRK, Gerber, Kabar, have all passed thru my hands. The kukri is a nice sword substitute considering its cutting power. The Kabar had the most utility. The Gerber and SRK never got use beyond maintenance, I got lucky enough to never need them. The kukri did a great job making kindling from bush trees too.

I remember it like it was yesterday; the LT needed two of us to infiltrate Charlie's perimeter and take out a troop carrier and a ChiCom tank. We each had our folding knives, I had my Emerson and Toadlicker had his Spyderco. We slipped in under cover of darkness and stabbed those great folders all through the sheet metal, the steel, the leather and canvas and utterly destroyed those vehicles. We returned and the LT offered us a special prize, a can of sardines each, and we used our Kabars until they snapped off at the hilt, but luck was with us, Chawdaddy had his serrated blade Swiss Army knife and he saved the night! OK, all BS aside, other than the guy who kept calling the Esee knives EEEESSEE , which was annoying, much of this was fun One has to assume that it was not put together by anyone who was in actual combat, but there WERE a few nice blades in here.

The Ka-Bar is a stick tang, and not a special forces knife. And if you try to use them, even the new Magnacut ones, they break pretty easily at the crossguard, where the blade becomes said stick tang.

i might be the first to say this and i might get hate for it but here it goes... i think the KA Bar is insanely overrated. I own several. the standard and a few variant models. I would never say it has a full tang... more like a quarter tang. I honestly just don't like them... that is to say if it was the only knife i had when i need a knife then im going to be wishing i had a different knife.

Well, it depends on what you expect from the knife. A stiletto-like one whose sole purpose is to stab and kill or a survival knife. Every knife can be deadly in the hands of a trained person. However, one has to ask: "How much gear do I want to carry around?" Answer: "Only as much as you need to fulfill the task".

I liked the premise of the video but there is no way in hell that a folding knife should be in this video regardless of manufacturer. All folding knives are ludicrous at best and pure insanity at worst for close quarters combat. It is pure folly for anyone who proclaims otherwise and is someone you should get away from as fast as you can run. That being said, there were some really decent fixed blades highlighted in the video. Interesting topic overall.

The SRK in 3v, and the Socom Elite are decent knives, but i wouldn't carry either because there are much better out there, not to mention other than a multi tool a folding knife is a waste of weight and space concerning overt war kit. The others are second rate, over promoted regardless of the adjectives being thrown around. A knife with a blade under 4in is not a military fighting knife. Maybe an edc civilian knife, but advertised as A special forces fighting knife is inappropriate. Maybe a military guy owns one, but not first choice to trust your life to in war.. Want an iconic war knife? How about a Randall #1? Need a dagger? Randall #2 Hung up on kabar, with it's weak tang issues? How about a Bark River Blackjack? Fits right into the Kabar hard scabbard and has a full tang, better steel. Both Randall and Bark River make better more reliable knives than anything mentioned in this video.

I served with the Royal Marines-42 Commando the chances of using a knife in combat is very low, although issued with the Fairbairn Sykes i chose to carry the more modern Applegate Fairbairn never used it i carried a ka bar until i saw one bend at the tang (it's weakpoint is it's almost rat tail tang) after that i carried a cold steel recon tanto great for utility as a backup my spyderco military and a leathearman wave, this was before the advent of "super"steels now my edc is a swiss army knife -thanks to our stupid UK laws but if I'm out in the country i take my cold steel Espada XL and a hand made Bowie.

A knife is just a tool your gun is your weapon . Remember the old saying , “you can tell the looser in a knife fight because they die during the fight , the winner dies in hospital ! 😉

Sog becoming the Seals knife was a decision based on politics, not the knives that were in the selection. I've handled both the SOG seal knives as well as the Emerson/ Neely SpecWar and believe me the SpecWar is far superior. But politics stepped in and killed it. I was involved in the knife business during the time when that selection was made and you wouldn't believe the backhanded political crap that went on behind closed doors during that selection process.
