I had an old giant CRT at the time I first got my DC, and the size and position of the built-in speakers produced an interesting phenomenon I'll never forget. The deep bassy sound it makes at the end of the boot up sound? It would cause the entire plastic housing of the TV to vibrate and produce a weird resonance. I had to crank the TV down before that or else it would wake my parents. When I got a newer CRT (that supported modern inputs and not just RF!!) that was no longer an issue. Side note: The DC had a really good RF adapter. The RF was actually really close to standard composite on the DC. Meanwhile on my PSX the RF adapter was absolute garbage vs even composite. Especially the audio, it absolutely butchered music on the PSX. But on the DC it was actually decently clear and the picture wasn't half bad either. Of course s-video was vastly better, almost as good as SCART... but I was happy to have decent RF until I got my newer TV.

Miss the Dreamcast. Hell, I just miss Sega in general.

Dreamcast, one of my favorite consoles of all time. Miss the good old days playing on this last Sega console. Sure, Sega developed multiple games on other platforms but it don't feel good in some or another way. The first console I bought and played in generation 6. Later on, the Xbox, PS2 and GameCube were also a part of my collection. If I'm honest, generation 6 was probably the best console generation ever. I wish Sega had the money to make a new console but unfortunately this is wishful thinking due to the financial health of Sega. Nintendo should consider to buy Sega and develop a successor to the Switch. Nintendo has the money, they are rich, ridiculously and filthy rich. In the top 500 of Japanese companies with the most cash on hand, Nintendo is on number 1, even letting Sony (the whole corporation, not only the PlayStation division) bite the dust who are on the 4th place.

Absolutely. So stunning, and has aged very gracefully.

I remember reading a preview section of Dreamcast magazine back in 1999 and seeing the screen shot for Castlevania with a female protagonist. That shot with the three headed snake. I didn't realize that it was cancelled. I guess I just forgot about following up on it. Thanks for jogging my memory! Great video!

About Streets of Rage 4: Apparently Core Design was developing it, but lost the name after they had believed that they were gonna be able to port it to not only the Dreamcast, but PS1 and N64. when Sega pulled the game license from them, they re-tooled the game, and it became Fighting Force. So technically we DID get Streets of Rage 4.

Wow, I can't believe that Dragon's Crown was intended for Dreamcast originally. I can only be glad that it made it's way to us eventually, such a phenomenal game. Geist Force does look really interesting... a shame that it has been left without its finishing polish. I may look into getting a copy of Propeller Arena too.

Yeah, crazy! Geist Force looks like it had so much potential, it's a crying shame that they couldn't round off the edges. It would have been well-suited to the Dreamcast. Grab a repro of Propeller Arena mate, it's great fun. Thanks, Wayne!

An arcade port of Time Crisis II was planned for a Dreamcast release, but was never made, likely due to the PlayStation 2 already being released.

It was likely ported to be released back in 1999 or early 2000. Mostly 1999 It was completely finished and Namco decide their decision to cancelled it, and also don't forget about PAC-MAN World 1 is also planned to be on the Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 and Windows too and they were cancelled for unknown reasons.

Jeremy Robertson um yes it is, look on the page and search it up there were rumors of Time Crisis II version being planned on the Dreamcast by development and it was cancelled, look it on IGN, SegaRetro. Not the Wikipedia.

There were so many more cancelled Dreamcast games you could probably do a part 2 & 3 of this.

The thing is, although there might be a lot more games, they have to have a) enough interesting information available, and b) have enough footage and/or images to show. I picked these fifteen as the most interesting that had these qualities.

Man, if only the Dreamcast lasted another year. Some of these may have eventually been released.

They almost had GTA 3 as an exclusive title!

Shenmue 2 was cancelled in the US, while EU and JP got a proper release. This hurt, not just from not getting to play it on the DC, but because that meant we couldn't use the save data carry over from 1 to 2. We wouldn't get to do this until the new HD versions.

I wish Sega's _Star Wars Trilogy Arcade_ and Capcom's _Red Earth_ got physical releases. Capcom released so many fighters on the Dreamcast, I'm amazed they skipped over this game and Sega/LucasArts' Star Wars game is baffling since it was released just months before the DC so it would have made an amazing launch title.

I remember reading that Shinobi was initially in development for Dreamcast, before SEGA went 3rd party & shifted development to PS2, not unlike how Toe Jam & Earl 3 was in development for DC before it was ported & developed for the Original Xbox.

I find it odd that Half-Life for the Dreamcast wasn't mentioned in this otherwise awesome video. Half-Life was also a completed title and featured enhanced graphics from the PC release. Valve canceled its release AFTER the game went gold because "they didn't want to spend the money to market the game!" Two weeks after the cancellation, the devs put the ISO up online because they were angry it was canceled and wanted people to actually experience all of their hard-work.

Well, technically it was mentioned, as I showed it at the start of the video. I guess I just thought that most people were aware of it. It's great fun though! Shame it never emerged, I'm not surprised that the devs were so pissed. It must be maddening to see all that hard work go to waste.

What?! Actually, Half-Life for DreamCast was officially released. I bought it, played it, and finished it. It is just that it was released for PC instead. I was so glad when it was eventually cancelled for DreamCast, because I wanted to play it, and I was furious when I initially heard that it was going to be exclusive to a console.

I had a demo disc that I believe was from the official DC magazine that had a playable demo of LoK Soul Reaver 2 on it. I wish I could find it now!

That was so awesome Pete, loved it, so professionally done! I've always had a huge fascination with cancelled games and being able to get hold of some of them is just the best thing ever. Thanks to the incredible group that is Galaxy Sega of course, I'm very lucky to now have copies of Half Life 2, Propeller Arena, Ecco the Dolphin 2 and Toejam & Earl 3. I also remember playing the N64 prototype of Glover 2 and I actually didn't know there was a planned Streets of Rage 4 but I agree that it would need to stay faithful to the first 3 if it was to officially be made! A lot of other games there that I didn't know about and so great to know you can get hold of a lot of them and play them on your Dreamcast. This could so easily be shown on TV as it's so well done! 👍

If there was any abandoned dreamcast game I'd want to be released it had to be Agartha. Just the survival-horror aspect of it in a remote setting with people around that you can make decisions about to change the story was so interesting to me. I wanted to know more about the environment and how the setting came to be after going through some of the cutscenes released. Heck I got so hooked on just the concepts left around by Agartha that I created a story inspired by it for my final college writing project. I really do wish that more of the game will be uncovered but those chances seem impossible at this point. :(

Originally, The Lost World: Jurassic Park arcade game was announced to be ported to the Dreamcast with all the scrapped levels included in 1999. 2 years later, in 2001, the port was cancelled

Good stuff. I've always felt that if the Dreamcast would have been kept afloat for just ONE extra year longer, they could have almost doubled the amount of great games that the system ended up with. I remember being very pissed at all the canned titles.

There was a great arcade game out at that time “jet wings” that would have probably gave that game some real value to the system

Thanks, Daron! Yeah Half-Life is entirely playable, but you really need to use the keyboard and mouse because it's almost impossible with a controller. Ecco II you can get too, I have a repro of that as well, but it's really raw and unfinished, so it's more of a tech demo.

Absolutely criminal.

One of the unmentioned Dreamcast cancelled games that was a great shame was Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 3. A fantastic racing simulation on PC which would have wiped the floor with other console F1 games at the time. Development got shifted to XBox apparently, which then became the sequel GP4, then also cancelled.

Love stuff like this as you can see what could have been. I agree with you I wouldn't want to see a Streets of Rage like the one you mentioned here. I would love to see Sega treat Streets of Rage like Sonic Mania. Great video as always and will be taking a peek into the repro scene for stuff like this

Enjoyed that, Pete. Had no idea that a Streets of Rage game was due on the Dreamcast. Understandable how Propeller Arena was held back but that's a shame because it looks really good. Take the Bullet also looks like something I would have given a go to back in the day and Picasso sounds intriguing as well.

Enjoyed this Pete. Love the DC it's one I never owned growing up but I think since getting a Naomi arcade cab it's pushed me to explore the system a lot more. Hellgate, Geist Force, Thunder Force VI all look like they could have been great games. I'm kind of glad SoR4 didn't get a release as if it flopped I doubt we would have had the interest for the release we had last year.

Yes, that was a huge factor. It was a cheap way to get a DVD player, just like the PS3 ended up being a cheap way to watch blu-rays.

Great job as always. Surprised you did not mention Dark Angel: Vampire Apocalypse. I remember it was getting much cover on ODCM, including ads and articles. Although it did come out on ps2, it was nothing like what was planned for the DC. I would love to hear the story behind its cancellation

Brilliant video Pete. I never had a dreamcast back in the day but always wanted one, Ive recently inherited one and may look into getting some of the after market shooters. Gunlord looks interesting too!

Thanks, Joe! Ah, that's awesome mate. Gunlord is awesome, it reminds me of Turrican quite a bit. And some of the more recent shooters are good. The best shooters are in the Japanese library though, like Under Defeat and (my favourite) Zero Gunner 2. If the prices put you off you can get repros from the guy in the video description. I''d advise against getting repros of the newer indie games though as it's better that we support the developers still making Dreamcast games. Great video Pete! The fact that most of these games never appeared on a different platform is saying something. Of these the loss of Propellor Arena is the most tragic. Ace Combat 4 was released in the US in November 2001 and also featured cities with skyscrapers to crash into! I understand why they made the call to cancel the game. However I suspect in a business sense, it wasn't the hardest call to make.

I'm not sure to be honest as a few have popped up since this video was made, but at least a few will be.

I’m glad that we now have access to early, or in some cases finished builds, of some of these canceled games now. I never would’ve thought in my wildest dreams I would get to play that E3 build of Castlevania: Resurrection!

I didn't know about Dragon's Crown, cool, good thing it came out and I actually have it on PS3 and is a great game, I was kinda sad when Castlevania got cancelled and I thought they were gonna do it on PS2 since I was not a Dreamcast user, but they gave us the horrble PS2 games

Starfox 64/Lylat Wars is one of my favorite games so I have tp say Geist Force looks awesome. Also what is that remix of Yun/Yang's theme at the start?

Yeah, Geist Force had so much potential, what a shame. A Star Fox style game would have been right at home on the Dreamcast I think. Not sure what the remix is, but I get most of the music I use in videos here: downloads.khinsider.com/

Skies reminds me of Fairy on the xbox 360 and ps3, just a little. Out of curiosity, is the game stolen a rework of picassio. Because premise sounds somewhat familiar just with a female protagonist.

yeah, i've only seen videos of it but it looks awesome... there was plans to bring wing war to the 32x at one point too. i saw a comment on streets of rage 4/fighting force, and i just want to add ff was meant to be a sor game early in dev but it was core's decision to change it and make it multi-platform... i've always felt the dynamite deka games should have been streets of rage 4-6.

Love that opening sound clip reminds me of how much I really enjoyed the Dreamcast maybe the most comfortable controller

onaretrotip Same here a absolutely love every single last thing about the DC bar the controller a mean it looks nice and all plus the VMU screen was/is revolutionary but the placement of the analogue stick for me is way off and causes me thumb to ache real bad after a few minutes of play it's so frustrating it doesn't stop me playing on the thing all day & night though

Propeller Arena was a real shame, I enjoyed the multiplayer when I got hold of a copy and it has that classic Sega Arcade feel.

Yeah, shame that was cancelled over such a stupid mistake. Propeller Arena is bloody good fun. The timing couldn't have been worse. At least we can play it now, so it hasn't gone entirely unappreciated. Thanks, Ben!

The music is from Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Trigger Heart Exelica, Ikaruga, and Soul Calibur (all on Dreamcast).

are these games licensed or are the roms in the public domain for anyone to download

I'm not entirely sure, but probably a mixture of the two. I don't think anyone will complain if you were to download the ISO of any of the playable ones.

Don’t forget that there was a cancelled simpsons game for the Dreamcast as well. An unreleased tech demo was posted on the internet late last year.

There were loads more than 15 cancelled Dreamcast games, quite a long list.

that Agartha resamble cursed mountain for wii, its settings and its assets are very similar

Activision's 1999 Space Invaders game was supposed to get a Dreamcast version. It would have been cool. Just imagine: 60fps and the PSX version's special effects. I don't know if it would have been like that, but all I know is the only evidence of development was in some magazine in 2000 that listed Space Invaders under upcoming Dreamcast games. It's a shame.

Streets of Rage 4 was eventually re-worked and made into Fighting Force and Fighting Force 64 on the 64. It was a pretty fun game. Kinda short, but I played it multiple times.

The ones i was most gutted about was Colin McRae Rally 2.0 & Emergency Ambulance. Messiah looked interesting too. Great video, didnt know about some of these.

Emergency Ambulance is an arcade game Sega made where you have to get from point a to b before your patient dies. One of the UK DC mags reported that Emergency Ambulance, Brave Firefighters & Jambo Safari were all gonna come out on 1 disc but never did.

The plot is so unorthodox and unlike anything ive heard of for a game. Its such a shame I overlooked the dreamcast and didnt give it a chance in 1999, i was a staunch Playstation kid, and went for the N64 instead. I shouldve chose the DC.

What about Air NiGHTS? it was to be a sequel to NiGHTS into Dreams on the Saturn, slated for the Dreamcast, and also had a Motion-Control peripheral developed for use on the game( Which later became the maracas for Samba de Amigo). Ultimately the game was canceled, but it was later released on the Nintendo Wii as NiGHTS Journey of Dreams

that 3d SoR and yeah your comments that you hope it a true SoR4 would be 2D came true and beautifully so. We may have had to wait a long time for a true sequel but it finally happened and was superb. :)

Yes, it was worth the wait, and I'm still glad they didn't make a 3D one.

What is it about the Dreamcast that we all love so much? Maybe its the little underdog thing. Maybe it's the type of games. Or maybe its just that Sega was such a big part if my life for so many years. I need to get a Dreamcast again even if to just sit on my shelf so i can look at it from time to time like a loved trophy.

God knows. A lot of it for me is nostalgia. I had just moved out of home (at 19) in the year 2000, and one of my flatmates had a Dreamcast. Great memories, and many all-nighters playing Soul Calibur, Power Stone, etc.

I would like to see the top 10 best aged sega genesis/mega drive games in your opinion :D

Alien Resurrection info from Martin Piper: Martin:A Sega Saturn version of Alien Resurrection was being worked on, as far as I recall no Dreamcast version. The Saturn version failed when the programmer was found to be wasting time by trying to hand code everything as one huge assembly file. It failed to progress beyond a technical demo, not a surprise really

Thank god Street of rage 4 didn’t get cancelled for the Nintendo switch xbox one PS4 and ps5 but it only got cancelled for the sega Dreamcast

Another canceled Dreamcast game was one of SEGA's best arcade racers in the late '90's and that was Scud Race/SEGA Super GT. It only came out on the Dreamcast as a tech demo of what the game would look like and to show what the Dreamcast graphics are capable of, really sad that the game had to get canceled for the Dreamcast though as it's a really fun racer from the arcade and it would of probably helped the Dreamcast sell even more well. I also wish DAYTONA USA 2 could of got a port to the Dreamcast as well other than DAYTONA USA 2001 that we got instead.

The Furthest Man From Home And the point is SEGA right now just wants to forget about two of their best arcade racers of the late '90's (Scud Race and DAYTONA USA 2) rather than giving us what we, us fans want and what we want is a console port of those two games in HD and with online. I just wish and hope that one day they would port them but I also doubt that at same time, it was Scud Race's 20th Anniversary last year and they didn't even think to do something about it then, and next year is going to be DAYTONA USA 2's 20th, doubt SEGA will do something for that either.

The Furthest Man From Home Exactly, and the new 'so called DAYTONA USA sequel' (DAYTONA Championship USA) is absolutely terrible and a mock of the original game to trolls us fans, when they announced the game at first when it at the 3 in the title they made us think that they were actually gonna give us a 'true sequel' to the first two games until they showed us the trailer revealing that it's a horribly remaster of the original with bad controls and taking the 3 off the title to troll us fans.

I was hoping that '"Dee Dee Planet" was going to appear on this list, it was a very simplistic 2D Robot arena game that was already finished 100% but was cancelled at the last minute due to a network bug that the game had. SEGA still has the game in their archive as seen in a picture online. There's a promotional video on youtube as well as some footage of the booth it had at Spaceworld I believe.

Some of these games looked they would of had a real chance had they of been released, Picassio & Agartha are the type of games I would've gone for. I am in complete agreement with you on Streets Of rage 4 though, I'm glad that never made it to release lol.
