15 Biggest Surprises After My Gastric Bypass/RNY Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery

Some surprises I encountered in this year since my Gastric Bypass/RNY surgery. Some of these shouldn't have been surprises, but I didn't listen to advice/warnings. Hopefully this video can help you be a bit more prepared if you are considering the surgery or if you are early on your journey after having surgery.

Hi Nicole, everything you said is the same for me too. I´m 14 Month after surgery and I lost 56kg (124 lbs)) so far. I´m very small now, but I see myself bigger most of the time. It´s a little bit confusing ;). I am constantly tired and freezing. Keep up with telling your story, it´s important to know for everyone who wants to go the same path. For everyone who considers surgery: I myself feel not that well a few times throughout the day because my stomach hurts a bit or I am nauseous. It happens almost daily because my bowel movement is to strong and that hurts (no one knows why) and sometimes i cant tolerate some foods. (Especially after my Gallbladder needed to be removed) This can happen too...And people need to know this to be prepared. Many people at the internet are telling only how fabulous they feel, but I think most of them are not telling everything. Everyone needs to ask himself if all the problems that could occur would be worth it for them. Because after surgery you have to deal with everything that comes your way, there is no real way back after this, you have to work hard for your goal and sometimes (or often) you dont feel that well. You really have to take care of yourself after this. Most of the people in my support group think the same. We might be thin and healthy now, but the strains on our lifes because of the surgary are visible and will make you feel miserable many times throughout this jouney. You dont know how your body will react and it´s for everyone different. Be aware if you do this: It is not easy and you will suffer sometimes. Even if you are doing erverything the right way. And it will be like this for the rest of your life. So please dont make a quick decision. Inform yourself in any possible way. Was it worth it? For me: Definately yes. I would do it all over again, even with knowing all of this. All of my comorbidities are gone and I feel very good beeing thin. I was very unhealthy and felt very very unhappy before the surgery. My life today is way better than before the surgary, even with all the upcoming side effects. I´m sorry that my english is not that good. I am from germany and it´s a bit difficult to explain this things in a foreign language.

You are so right - everyone needs to carefully weigh the possible cons against the possible pro of the surgery. I don't think anyone gets away with NO complications and the complications can last for a lifetime. (Your English is perfect! Never would have known it is your second language - you are a great writer and your thoughts were presented very clearly)

Thank you for explaining this. I am trying to find as much info about baristas surgery. Everyone says positives but not negatives. My surgeon never said my gallbladder may need to be removed. Why is this?

I think out of all the videos I have come across in my research into bariatric surgery, yours are the ones I like the most! Thank you for sharing your journey and sharing all the information you have. It's very helpful and keeps me from being quite so nervous at what I'm facing! PS...I'm not really surprised you still want chocolate! It IS, after all, the Sixth Food Group, and quite necessary to our health! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thank you so much for your honesty in this post. I am about 3/4 through the pre-surgery process and have not been able to find anyone who has experienced my concerns about bowel habits after surgery. While I realize we are all different and a lot depends on what I eat, I am so scared this surgery will make my IBS-D worse. I have had it for over 40 years now and I can count on one hand the times I was constipated. Don’t get me wrong, I am not looking forward to it but having a chance of not experiencing the doubled over cramping IBS-D every day of my life, you have help ease my mind so much! And knowing what you said, I can try to stay ahead of possible constipation. Thank you!

Yes...the loose skin in unexpected places is an issue. The bariatric gas is terrible. No shoe size never changed but my feet were never swollen. I thought I would like getting my picture taken more after losing more than 100#. But I still hate the view. OMG...the defensive part. Several shops that I go to call me skinny now. Not even close, but compared to where I was before, I understand why they say that. But I've always been defensive of the term skinny. Thanks for this chat. You hit the points right on the head.

Can totally relate to nearly everything you mentioned. This coming Jan 21, will be (wow, golden bday? lol) 21 yrs since my RNY. Was one of the first in my state to have it done laparoscopic. Back when even RNY was so much less even known about. That said, I know you mentioned being a nurse, but if you ever have any questions.. feel free. :) PS: Bread, pasta, rice, potato.. I still get dumping syndrome to this day. OR if I drink during/too near to eating. Not fun AT ALL, but... at the same time, thankful that I do. Keeps me from even wanting those things. lol Huge congrats on your success!!

I am about 5.5 weeks post op now and have a lot of the same things; dry mouth, loose skin where I thought would tighten up a little bit, etc. I've been lucky in the bathroom. I go about twice a day with good movement. I am still learning when the "extra bite" is too much, so I've gone through some "regurgitation" issues but I'm trying to incorporate the 30-minute rule with my eating to avoid some of that. I understand about the burping and hiccups too, and sometimes they just are not fun because they usually lead to throwing up. It's pretty much trial and error for me on eating still. I do try to eat my meat and get a good amount of protein in my diet but not being able to drink while you eat is so hard and makes eating meat difficult. Not sure about the body demorph???? thing yet, but I'm sure I will have it. I did take one picture since my surgery and compared to before I started, and I didn't see that much of a difference, but a lot of my FB friends said they could tell a big difference. It's funny also, because I had lost 143 pounds back between 2005-2007, and a few months ago I was looking at some pictures my dad had on some flash drives from that period. I was like you; I knew I was a size 4-6 at that time but I felt like I still looked like a size 26. I saw myself as "fat". I am going to try to be more positive this time. Those little achievements, like you being about to tie your shoes or clip your toenails now, are the best feeling. Last week I was sitting, and I crossed my legs for the first time in I don't know how many years. They are great little surprises. I did lose about 50lbs prior to my surgery so my after-surgery weight loss is going a little slower that I thought (my surprise). I have watched your videos of your journey through, and you are truly encouraging to those of us who are following behind you. I always look forward to seeing the next one.

The sorbitol/glucitol sugar alcohols & aspartame in 'em made my entire mouth feel like a$$. LOL My tummy too, tbh. If you absolutely have to have a mint, have the regular ones but less of them. Or tic-tacs.
