15 (actually 16) roofing terms you need to know! | Pro Exteriors & Construction
Here are 16 roofing terms you need to know if you're a contractor!
1. Square - Unit of measurement that describes square feet on a roof. For example, 19 squares is 1,900 square feet
2. Decking - Part of roof that sits on top of trusses
3. Eave Edge - Gutter edges
4. Rake Edge - Two parts of roof that come together to make a V-shape
5. Style D Flashing - Allows shingles to extend over roof
6. Gutter Apron - Sits over gutters
7. Ice & Water Shield - Makes sure water doesn’t seep from gutters under shingles
8. Synthetic Underlayment - Covers part of roof that Ice & Water Shield cannot protect
9. Valley - Where two roof sections come together
10. Ridge - Where the V comes together; ventilates attic
11. Turtle Vent - Serves same purpose as ridge, but not as popular or effective as the ridge when it comes to roof ventilation
12. Impact Rated - Most shingles on homes aren’t impact rated because of added cost, but class 3 and 4 shingles offer better protection against hail damage
13. Cut-Up - How many sections a roof is cut up into
14. Walkable - How safe it is to walk on a roof
15. Penetrations - Anything that penetrates the roof (chimney, vent, etc.)
16. Starter Shingles - Goes along eve edge, so that first course of shingles doesn’t get blown off during heavy winds

Who We Are:
We Are Pro Exteriors & Construction
Pro Exteriors was started in the spring of 2010. It was started by Nate Schweppe after working for his family’s roofing business since he was around 12 years old.
At Pro Exteriors & Construction we are a full service exterior remodel and restoration company. We are family and locally owned and operated. All of our employees are local and speak fluent English. We believe that bigger is rarely better and we focus on quality over quantity. We believe every client deserves our full attention from start to finish. We know exterior projects can be expensive, stressful and sometimes confusing, we strive to minimize or eliminate as much of that as possible. We believe in educating our clients on the options that fit their desires and budget and letting them make the decision rather than “selling” them a product or service, and believe in creating lasting relationships rather than one time sales. We believe in old fashioned customer service coupled with cutting edge products and services.

Wish I would've watched this 5 years ago when I worked roofing. I worked for a small town boy and roofing was some of the most gratifying work I've ever done as long as the pitch wasn't too steep, busting out and using toe boards were a pain in the ass. Tear off was satisfying, using a shingle cutter to get a perfect end cut was amazing. The worst part was being 140 pounds and hauling up an 80 pound bundle. Roofers should be paid more than plumbers and electricians imo just for the danger factor
Really great information as I just started to sell roofs and am eager to be fluent in roofing language. Tell your boss to give you a raise and tell me I SAID SO, LOL!!!

Gotta respect the Roofer...
This video it was so cool and I so much love it a lot,can you be my mentor, am from Nigeria and i have been on house roofing 2 years so i think that i need someone that is much far beyond my experience in house roofing to teach me more
Thanks for posting this. It's great to be able to understand when the roofer is speaking. How much does the siding type effect the roof job. I have three year old Alside Ascend Composite Cladding Siding (installs like vinyl with a J channel on the bottom). How hard is it to replace the step flashing (I think you skipped that term). I'd guess the J channel is screwed through the old step flashing. Seems like Hardie could be a pain too. For the ridge venting... I like the idea, but I have a whole house fan requiring 9 sq feet of venting. I don't think a ridge vent alone is enough... And, I've also had squirrel problems. Need metal covers over everything. Sigh.
Forgot counter step flashing,Backpan, water diverters,counter flashing and base very important 80% don't do chimney and skylights properly. Nice to see another good roofer

Great video do you have a course on the Roofing business?
Hi we've watched several of your videos and we like them; we need your feedback: we installed a new roof approx. a month ago, we noticed several problems with the new installation such as holes, openings, exposed nails, damaged rafters, nail penetration to the playwood, amongst other things, we contacted the roofing company, after a month of constant emails, photos and videos, they finally came by too pictures and the tech said that he was going to write a report, and we should wait for a company letter with their decision (we know learned they installed the wrong playwood) we have not as of yet heard from anyone; the project mgr. commented: "Call us when there's a leak on the roof"! meanwhile huracanes season is upon us and we are very worried since my wife and I are sick, disabled people; the roofing company pulled the permit and everything "legally" was in order, and they're licensed and "supposedly a 5 star company" they just did a horrible installation job!!!! What do you suggest we do?? What can you suggest? Where are located??? We are in the state of FL, Tampa area. Thanks!
Hey Great video! Great presentation! Not too much information and clearly explained everything necessary.. PROBLEM.... Malarkey brand was purchased by Mr Roof, and are garbage. They sell their roofs in-part by stating they make their own shingles because they now own Malarkey. Other than that, if you provided a better product and were in my house, I’m sold! I actually outline these terms in a pamphlet using the exact same picture I provide so they can look it over and can follow along when I come out to talk about what I can do for them.

Could you explain what Trusses & Eves are? All the other terms
@YetiRoofing

Trusses are the structural framing of your roof. Eaves are the portion at the bottom of the trusses. Your gutters hang from the eaves, if that helps.
Roof contractor charges meaning , Labor Minimums ,Heat vents & air cond labor and Electrical Labor? Didn’t know if the heat vents and air-conditioning labor was to cover the air conditioning and the heat vents on house ? Thanks
Can you tell me what a hip roof is? I assume that means not cut up. Just two different sides that come together at the ridge.

A roofer has quoted using a lead drip edge?....instead of aluminum, as being a superior product. Would you agree?
The anatomy of a roof is complicated, lol! Would you please explain to me what the fascia is, & where on the roof is it exactly?
Question: if I have the ice and water barrier on the eaves do place the starter shingles on top of the ice and water barrier?
@YetiRoofing
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the starter shingles go on top of the ice & water shield so the field shingles can stick directly to the starter shingles. Great question!
Here's another question if I have ice and water barrier down on the eaves do I still need to put felt paper over the ice and water barrier ?
@YetiRoofing
3 жыл бұрын
Technically no but if you ever plan on doing your roof again yourself or want to be nice to the next guy, then yes. The shingles and the ice and water shield overtime almost become one and they are very difficult to remove the shingles when they are stuck to the ice and water shield. With that said, 99% of contractors do not put felt paper over the ice and water because it’s just an additional expense.
Is it normal to ask for certain parts to be replaced before an entire roof replacement, such as soffits (#17?)?
@YetiRoofing
7 ай бұрын
Yes, certain parts should be replaced such as the flashings, pipe boots etc. Soffits are on the underside of the roof and do not need to be replaced during the roof replacement unless there's a ventilation issue.

Should starter shingles be placed along the gable edges as well?
@YetiRoofing

It is somewhat dependant on the region. It is required in some areas down south along the coasts. It it not required here in South Dakota and I personally don't feel it's necessary but it won't hurt anything to use them on the gables as well.

You would think that front-line workers that support small local business would be rewarded for their efforts. But for some it's all about profit. Case in point: I always thought you get what you pay for. Not in this case! I went with Hy-Grade roofing even though they were by far the most expensive quote I received. Worst decision I could have made. They promised to install the roof in 4-6 weeks, of course they were late. When they finally showed up without the proper equipment and they damaged my property. Sad part is that my poor wife found the damage after coming home from her frontline COVID job. Broke my heart to see how upset she was when she saw the damage! SHAME ON HY-GRADE! They are really proud of the “Quality Audit” that they do, but of course they won’t give you a copy of the audit…lol BTW - the “Quality Audit” they did at my house consisted of 2 guys coming over to pick up the leftover junk they left at my house for a month. They never even went up on the roof! Horrible customer service experience! Save your money use someone else!
