USS ARIZONA will never be decommissioned, The United States Navy doesn’t decommission vessels that have been sunk with all (or at least the majority) of her crew still on board for its to Honor the sailors who lost their lives. As well as people visit her memorial site all the time so she is no where near being “abandoned”

Arizona was placed "in ordinary" (declared to be temporarily out of service) at Pearl Harbor on 29 December, and was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 December 1942.[2] She was so badly damaged by the magazine explosion that she was not thought fit for service even if she could be salvaged, unlike many of the other sunken ships nearby.[56] Her surviving superstructure was scrappedin 1942, and her main armament was salvaged over the next year and a half.[57] The aft main gun turrets were removed and reinstalled as United States ArmyCoast Artillery Corps Battery Arizona at Kahe Point on the west coast of Oahu and Battery Pennsylvania on the Mokapu Peninsula, covering Kaneohe Bay at what is now Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Battery Pennsylvania fired its guns for the first and last time on V-J Day in August 1945 while training, while the nearby Battery Arizona was never completed.[58] Both forward turrets were left in place, although the guns from Turret II were salvaged and later installed on Nevada in the fall of 1944 after having been straightened and relined.[59] Nevada later fired these same guns against the Japanese islands of Okinawaand Iwo Jima.[60] Arizona memorialsEdit Main article: USS Arizona Memorial Unlike USS Constitution, Arizona is not perpetually in commission.[61] Arizona is under the control of the National Park Service, but the U.S. Navy still retains the title.[2] Arizona retains the right, in perpetuity, to fly the United States flag as if she were an active, commissioned naval vessel.[61] Aerial view of the USS Arizona Memorial, showing the wreck and oil seepage from the ship's bunkers The wreck of Arizona remains at Pearl Harbor to commemorate the men of her crew lost that December morning in 1941. On 7 March 1950, Admiral Arthur W. Radford, commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet at that time, instituted the raising of colors over her remains.[62] Legislation during the administrations of presidents Dwight D. Eisenhowerand John F. Kennedy resulted in the designation of the wreck as a national shrine in 1962. A memorial was built across the ship's sunken remains, including a shrine room listing the names of the lost crew members on a marble wall. The national memorialwas administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 15 October 1966. The ship herself was designated a National Historic Landmarkon 5 May 1989.[63] Upon their death, survivors of the attack may have their ashes placed within the ship, among their fallen comrades. Veterans who served aboard the ship at other times may have their ashes scattered in the water above the ship.[64] While the superstructure and two of the four main gun turrets were removed, the barbette of one of the turrets remains visible above the water.[61] Since her sinking, oil still leaks from the hull, with more than 2.3 quarts (2.18 l) escaping into the harbor per day.[65]The Navy, in conjunction with the National Park Service, has recently overseen a comprehensive computerized mapping of the hull, being careful to honor its role as a war grave.[66] The Navy is considering non-intrusive means of abating the continued leakage of oil to avoid the further environmental degradation of the harbor.[67] One of the original Arizona bells now hangs in the University of Arizona Student Union Memorial Center bell tower. The bell is rung after every home footballvictory, over any team except other Arizona schools.[68] A gun, mast, and anchor from Arizona are in Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza just east of the Arizona State Capitol complex in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The gun's plaque states that it was not on the ship during the Pearl Harbor attack, but was being relined and to be mounted on the battleship Nevada. It is paired with a gun from the battleship Missouri to represent the start and end of the Pacific War for the United States.[69] Other artifacts from the ship, such as items from the ship's silver service, are on permanent exhibit in the Arizona State Capitol Museum.[70] Every two years the Navy awards "The USS ArizonaMemorial Trophy" to the ship, determined by the Chief of Naval Operations, to have achieved the highest combat readiness in Strike warfare, Surface Fire Support and Anti-Surface warfare. The 3-foot-tall (0.91 m) bronze trophy on a black marble base was provided to the Navy by the citizens of the state of Arizona on 7 December 1987.[71]

The Sweepstakes is in Lake Huron, near a tourist town called Tobermory. The glass bottom boat tour over the Sweepstakes is very nice with a surprisingly sharp clear look at the wreck, then hiking on a nearby island. Tobermory is the north end of the Bruce trail and is the site of the docks for the ferry which services Manitoulin Island. I point this out because Tobermory is about a ten hour drive from Thunder Bay. You got the correct Province anyway.

It was supposed to have been scuttled in 30 feet of water as an artificial reef and diving attraction and a big show of scuttling it was planned including fireworks along with the scuttling charges. I don’t think RPS Sierra Madre can be considered as a “tourist destination”... But there is one in the Philippines I believe, it’s the USS Geneva / RPS Ospital ng Tulungan... It’s Vietnam War era supply and command ship of the US Navy, which was later turned over to the Philippines, and was converted into a hospital ship operated by the Philippine Coast Guard during the reign of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr... She was renamed “RPS Hospital ng Tulungan”... But two years after commisioning, it was caught on fire, and was abandoned... Right now, it’s located somewhere off the coast of the Province of Leyte... Although you cannot really go near it, you can still take images of it from a few meters away... So basically, it can still be considered as a “tourist destination”...

Admittedly the wreck site is probably only accessible to experienced scuba divers, but it is well worth a visit.

On the German island of Norderney there is also a wreck of a ship which got stuck there in the late 60s in an attempt to salvage another ship that had gotten stuck there (but had gotten free a while later). Quite the irony if you ask me.

While I was aboard my first ship, we chased the Oriskany all over the western pacific. She just completed her last yard period before that cruise. While transiting the Straits of Taiwan, we encountered heavy weather, Oriskany lost a good portion of her catwalks. and returned to Subic Bay while continued to Sasebo, Japan. Where we had repairs made to our upper mast that had broken off and hung by cables while in the storm.

#0 The HMHS Britannic. Britannic is the third sister of the White Star Line's Olympic class, sister to the RMS Olympic and the RMS Titanic. The Britannic was converted into a hospital ship (His Majesty's Hospital Ship) during The Great War and made trips to and from the Mediterranean to return wounded soldiers to England. On it''s final voyage at 8.12am on 21st November 1916, Britannic struck a mine laid by a German U-Boat in the Kea Channel off the coast of Greece. It sank in approximately 390 ft of water in about 55 minutes. It lays mostly intact on it starboard side, and is accessible to expert technical divers and submersibles. At 993 feet long and 53,200 tons, the HMHS Britannic remains the largest passenger shipwreck on the sea floor in the world.

Nos 16...I guess the expense is a factor. Thankfully, four of her sisters are still around. Hornet, Yorktown, Lexington and Intrepid. Unfortunately, the last chance to preserve an unimproved Essex class carrier fell short in 1972. The USS Bunker Hill would have made a grand museum. She was moored in San Diego and would have been preserved in Eugene, Oregon. Sadly, the funding never was attained.

The Sweepstakes is nowhere near Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay is a small bay and city of the same name located 680 km North Northwest of the wreck. The Sweepstakes lays in a marine park area located between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Lowering water levels have put the wreck at risk of ice damage over the last few years. I had the opportunity to dive on this and many of the other Fathom Five National Marine Park wrecks in the early 90s!
