    Very nice. It's interesting to observe how TxDOT design and lighting practices vary between cities... San Antonio is relatively conservative whereas Houston develops more radical styles of freeway construction, and Dallas and Austin seem to have mixtures of these two philosophies. El Paso is an interesting beast as well, given the contrast in geography between it and other Texas cities. They're all super fun to explore though and each brings awesome things to the table! Thanks for sharing, Jim!

    San Antonio has one of the largest freeway networks in the U.S.. and has two massive interchanges I-410 at US 281 & I-410 at I-10. Thanks for the video and song selections.

    fun fact; at around 3:20 you drive through the area (woodlawn/fredericksburg overpass) the band R.E.M. used to film the video for the song "everybody hurts" - it was done on a weekend when the lower section was scheduled to be closed further down for maintenance.

    Three things I love: When a town dares to connect interstates right in downtown (the launch of I-90 in Seattle also very fun); stacked parkways (yes, Jim, 3:13 IS really cool); and loops that 3 or more freeways form around a downtown. I couldn't get enough of Kansas City or Nashville. I just kept circling around and grinning like an idiot.

    What the fuck are you talking about? You sure you're not thinking of California? Texas has great roads that are very well maintained compared to...well, California. And in Texas, they don't toll the main freeways like they do in California or Illinois.

    Nice video Jim. Interstate 10 looks nice in the San Antonio area. In fact, it may be my favorite portion on the whole Interstate. It's even better than I-10 in the Los Angeles area. It takes a lot for me to like a highway in another metropolitan area, over my own area.

    Love this video! The landscapes west of San Antonio through the Texas Hill Country are quite scenic....Especially as you drop in and out of the valleys near Kerrville and Junction. Do you have any videos of that stretch (approx 100 or so miles west toward Junction)? We drove along I-10 toward Las Vegas a few years ago. It's interesting to see how the vegetation gradually thins out as you continue westward.

    Great stuff, I really enjoy your freeway videos. During this video, you were driving along, and I saw a few buildings and thought, "oh, theres a little business district with a few buildings", but then I realized that was downtown! It doesn't look like Dallas, that's for sure. Also, I noticed the freeway there; it looks old and a bit run down, as if it were built in the '60's maybe? The freeway near the end of the video looks modern though.

    This was great to see. I've driven the great majority of Interstate 10 from coast-to-coast, but other than the sections within San Antonio, between I-410 (east) and I-35...I haven't seen *any* of I-10 through the western half of the area, east of I-410. So, other than that short stretch of I-10 in San Antonio I've driven, I haven't seen any of I-10 between US 290 in Texas Hill Country, out to Texas State Highway 71. The western half of I-10 through the city looks pretty nice and spiffy. More interesting than what lies east of downtown, that's for sure. Nice soundtracks on this. Really looking forward to what you have in store through Texas Hill Country!

That HEB is my neighborhood HEB, the shopping center nearby has the nearest Fuddrucker's and Jason's Deli, etc. It was wonderful getting to relive up to that point the trip I made back to S.A. from Austin (I went via I-130) last Saturday because that's when I felt like my trip had been a total success, and I happen to be a fan of The Doobie Brothers and "Listen to the Music" is one of my favorite songs of theirs, so thank you for that too!!

    @frontdeskservices1385

    @@TheSolarcatcher If you think about it, Dallas really only has one semi freeway loop in I-635. Many other west-east freeways in the Northern Suburbs to compensate for not having a second loop including I-30 and I-20 connecting to Ft. Worth's enclosed I-820 loop which is a different core city of the DFW metro altogether. The inner Loop 12 in the Dallas city limits is similar to what San Antonio had in the 50's with Military drive on the south side to W.W White Rd. on the southeast side of town going North (as known as Loop 13) until the Freeway portion of Loop 410 South was completed in the 70s. San Antonio doesn't have much population in its suburban area outside Loop 1604 on the south side of the city and Bexar county as it is still semi -rural along Loop 410 South and subsequently, most of the additional small towns north of the city except for the I-35 cities between SA and Austin arent truly suburban in a sense like you see in Dallas and somewhat Houston. They are truly bigger city cores and extremely large metros compared to San Antonio.

I feel like US 281 is the best drive coming in from the North and is only getting better as they finish the freeway past 1604 out to the Bexar/Comal County line. Along with the Loop 1604 upgrades, the I-10 interchange renovation, and I-35 as TXDOT is looking to double deck the freeway out to Schertz, a lot of changes coming to the freeway system here in San Antonio.

    leroyybrown SA is 7th largest now, I believe and growing northward. With Austin getting bigger and 2 smaller cities between them, SA and Austin could become a Dallas Ft Worth or other dual city. it'll be huge then, area-wise

  • @Freewayjim

    @Freewayjim

    9 жыл бұрын

    jeebus022 While it is technically the 7th largest CITY, that is very misleading, San Antonio is the 25th largest METRO area in the US and a more accurate statement about the size of the place in general (Atlanta is the 39th largest city but 9th largest Metro area, see how that works?). I agree it could become like Dallas & Fort Worth with regard to the growth with Austin up the road and the places in between.

    +Freewayjim Larger metros such as Atlanta cover a much larger territory ....a fair comparison would be for San Antonio -New Braunfels (2.4 million) to include adjacent San Marcos & Austin and forming a population of almost 4.5 million and more comparable to the Atlanta region. The video is great but doesn't show how massive San Antonio's freeway system is which is one of the largest in the nation. Bexar county San Antonio population almost 2 million is the 17th largest county in the nation and has over 3,000 miles of freeways. San Antonio's freeways can compete with the bigger metros.

    Tommy seems to have loved the old San Antonio and dislikes what it is now. While I don't agree, I do understand his viewpoint. It's what I think about Austin. Austin used to be a cool city. Now it's an overly congested shithole.
