My friend Frank is the biggest Spurs fan I've ever met, he's 79 and supported Tottenham Hotspur since 1946, and remembers every minute of this match, every goal and every line off the commentary. Back in '63, he claimed if Spurs won the game, he'd propose to his girlfriend. They won 5-1. He proposed to her the next day and they're still together all these years later.

This is when spurs were a great team to watch and as a man utd fan always loved it when we played them.I used to shit myself when ever greaves got the ball in the 1960s now I'm 68 I don't need him to shit myself .

@@paulvsmith just reminded me when I was 14 I wanted to go to the spurs v United European cup winners game at white heart lane on the train it was a midweek night game.It was forty two shillings and sixpence .I told the ticket seller I was only thirteen so I could pay half price ,he said your older than thirteen ,what year was you born he asked.i said 1948 instead of 1949 .I thought it would make me a year younger but I should have said 1950 to make me a year younger ,He saidi i would have to pay the full adult price .I didn't have enough money ,I sat down and then went back To him a little later and told him the truth ,He told me not to lie and gave me the child price I got to the ground and everything was ok ,,but when spurs came out a big blanket of fog followed them across the ground .the referee waited half an hour then postponed the game ,When I got back to Euston station everywhere was clear . I couldn't see the rearranged Gama as I had no money

Spurs in 1963 were the first team in Britain to win a major European honour.That Cup Winners Cup 5-1 win over Alectico Madrid in the final was won in style. Spurs were without their anchor man Dave Mackay but Jimmy Greaves,Terry Dyson,Cliff Jones and John White were outstanding.

This is Tottenham. Our unique DNA. This is why we support Spurs. Atletico won that Cup 5x in a row,till we put 5 past them. No English club recording a bigger European final win.

Tottenham Hotspurs were the first British team to win an European Cup competition and they did it style by beating Alectico Madrid 5-1 in the 1963 European Cup Winners Cup later on the UEFA Cup. That European Cup Winners Cup win came two years after they became the first English club to achieve the double.It came barely a year after retaining the FA Cup by beating Burnley 3-1 in the final at Wembley. No British club had ever won any of the European Cup competitions but Spurs annihilation of Atlectico Madrid set the ball rolling for West Ham and later on Liverpool and Nottingham Forest to win the European Cup. That Cup Winners Cup triumph in 1963 Spurs had to do without Dave Mackay who had been replaced by Tony Marchi. But even without Mackay Spurs went on a goal scoring spree to score through Jimmy Greaves(2),Terry Dyson(2) and John White. That great Spurs team of the early Sixties broke up after that.John White was tragically killed by lightning in 1964 while sheltering during a storm.Danny Blanchflower because of advancing age was sold to another club.Only Jimmy Greaves and Cliff Jones survived from the great Spurs team of the early Sixties to feature in Spurs 1967 FA Cup triumph.

Unlike today, when the penalty was given, there were no arms up in the air, other gestures or shouting at a ref running backwards.
