LET'S PLANT!
EP 149 - Six reasons why you should separate the flower stalks from your Echeveria
Last month I rushed to finish the shade structure over my plants. It came at good time because of the heatwaves we were having.
After facing heatwaves after heatwaves, we finally got a break in the form of thunderstorms and cool weather. Between that and the shades, my plants have been growing crazy fast. A lot of them also started pushing out flower stalks. In this video, I show you seven things that you can do with them.

    Thanks for your patience. I'm almost ready to make the vlog regular again. Probably in February. Until then I will still have a lot of difficulty keeping up with all of the comments and replying to them. I'll see you in the future videos!

    I'm glad I heard of systemic pesticide from your channel a year ago it saved my entire collection of plants just wanted to let you know I haven't had a mealybug since. I have over 200 plants so it was a major pain but worth it🤯💖

    Great information Chuck👍. I have been cutting blooms since I found out they are mealy bug magnets. . I have propagated flower leaves but haven't had success with the stalks. I need to try that again. Stay blessed Chuck☺👍.

    Hi Chuck! Awesome flower stalk propagation - not something I would do since I grow indoors and see a flower once in a blue moon haha! So glad you got some rain. Shade structure looks like a good long term solution to the sun problem

    I also like the fact that I can just easily hook them on and off now, as opposed to struggling with putting down the posts and tying them down.

    I cut all flower stalks and plant them directly into a healthy potted plant, and allow them to do their thing. My oldest stalk is just 6 months old and it’s from my Echeveria Fire Ball, who currently stands at 52cm from soil to the top.

    Hello thank for all the information, and can you please share where can I find the shade cloths that you are using?

  • @Cerriscapades

    I use shade cloth with 50% UV protection. That's what works well in my climate. You may need something higher or lower depending on your climate. You can find that at your local hardware supplies stores, or maybe on websites like ebay.

    I’m curious, can you still cross-pollinate the flowers after the flower stalk has been removed from the main plant?

    This is kikuyu grass, very fast growing, very invasive. You'll have your hands full trying to trim them outside of summer haha! But the upside is that they are lower maintenance and very hardy compared to buffalo grass.

    Great video.I prefer to leave all the flower stalks on my plants,it's a real show all spring,it looks nice and I do a lot od pollinating so I need the flowers either way,can't wait to see the update on your hibrids!I want to start posting more videos like you but I can't get myself to...do you have any advice on that?Thanks!

    The best advice is to just hit record. Just start, lol. Once you get over that, I think things will just snowball from there. In my case it just started out as a quick tutorial thingy with no voiceover and just text on screen. Not even on youtube. Then eventually I made more videos and improved as I got more comfortable. So yeah just keep creating and watch your work evolve in time!

    Chuck - do you remove some of the leaves off of the stalk first or leave as is? Do you think removing more of the leaves makes pups more likely to sprout?

    One reason I don't plant them over a large area in the garden is because it rains in winter, and there is an increase risk of hail damage. This winter had large hail grains which have punctured most of my garden specimens beyond repair. Do you have hail? Which type of protection you use, which does not block sunlight?

  • @Cerriscapades

    @Cerriscapades

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi there. Yup we get hail, but they're usually just pea sized. Rarely gets larger than that. My plants get damaged since I don't always have cover on top of them, but they quickly outgrow the damage during the next growing season so I don't really mind. I only protect the plants that I intend to bring to a succulent show or something like that.

  • @Cerriscapades

    @Cerriscapades

    As for protection, some sort of netting might do. Shade cloth with a low UV protection rating is good (lowest I can find in my local hardware shop is 30%). You might also be able to use netting meant to keep birds away but the holes on those are probably large enough that hailstones can still go through.
