I lived in Bali for 2 years after marrying a Balinese woman. It was one of my life’s greatest experiences. Your tips are useful - especially about driving a motor bike. I have been nearly killed more times than I would like to think. One time a dog ran out in front of me and my wife . We both went over the handlebars and my wife landed on top of me - knocking me out. Be very careful on the road !!!

I've been respectful in every possible way and I've been repaid with the warmest kindness I have ever experienced in my life by the locals. The real reason to fall in love with Bali is the people who live there. Lots of love from Italy to all the Balineses.

Number 9 is so kinda important, and it's a daily basis activity. Most foreigners don't talk about this, but I'm glad you did. Edit: Because of some people who keep asking "what if I'm left handed" and some ignorant beings who bring religion matter to this right handed thing, I have to explain it here. First, it has nothing to do with any religion, some countries in southeast asia and in India also have the same habit, no matter what their religion is. Second, if you're left handed, let me tell you that many Indonesians are also left handed and they're still alive, nicely and peacefully here in this country. This habit with the right hand in not a strict rule, it's just something like a behavior that the LOCALS used to do in THEIR OWN LAND, daily and culturally. Just like how you bow to Japanese to show some respect, using right hand to shake hands, giving and receiving in Indonesia is just considered as a proper etiquette. But, normally, we'll understand if some foreigners have no idea about this thing. You'll be okay, I REPEAT, YOU'LL BE OKAY as long as you're being respectful to the owner of the land you're visiting. Have you seen any japanese who k!lls or beats up or spit on a foreigner just because they don't do the bowing? It's not that difficult to understand, isn't it? It's not that deep, duh. It's just up to you whether you want to respect the people of the land you're visiting or just act ignorant after knowing this. Either way, we're all good. 😊

No.13 isn’t 100% accurate, It should “don’t enter the temple when you’re in period”, it’s considere you’re in “dirty” time, you need rest and clean yourself. Lots of things to do inside balinese temple not just praying, and we need you to take care of yourself when you’re in period

Your chose word “dirty” it’s kind offensive to me as a woman who is obviously will have period time once a month or sometimes even twice!! We aren’t dirty/impure when it comes to period time, it is natural causes. Entering mosque is not prohibited so long not drip/leak the period blood on the floor mosque. Oh well, just have to respect other beliefs then.

  • @Kai-ne3ks

Women on their period are not ‘dirty’. Like with indigenous people, Hindus celebrate the period as a sacred separate ceremony itself - so entering the temple or sweat lodge would be experiencing two ceremonies at once, which therefore does not honour the original ceremony.

🙂💙💙hello i'm Scott from Australia in 2002 i went to bali for a holiday i LOVED it so much went there with my uncle and aunty we stayed at Legian we went there for 10 days had my 36th birthday there on Jimbaran bay beach at dinner during sunset on the beach was beautiful i also went shopping for myself at kuta markets bought 4 cotton ikat sarongs and 2 t shirts for me was nervous to barter for what i bought i still have the sarongs and T shirts i bought there to this day its always been a dream of mine to go there and i know everyone goes to bali but for me being disabled with spina bifida and i walk with canaidian crutches well i use them now but when i went there i used a wooden cane was not easy but managed anyway the only 1 down side to my holiday was we went 6 months after the sari club and paddys bar bombing one day we were on a tour bus going to a resturant for lunch further inland in bali well we drove past the boarded up site of the bombing site and it felt like we were in slow motion going past it well it did to me it gave me the chills at the thought of all the people that were killed and they were just spending the evening out enjoying themselves with their friends was heartbreaking at the sensless loss of human lives anyway apart from that 1 moment in time was wonderful to holiday in bali i'd love to go back there and see more of the island

It’s been several years since I was in Bali. Unbelievably beautiful! And the people are wonderful. When I told a shop owner in Ubud I was an architect, he showed me his home. It was vert memorable and beautiful. I bought a wonderful hand-painted modern artwork from a gallery, and since it was a formal gallery I wasn’t sure if I should bargain, so I didn’t and paid asking price. 😀 I just hoped they were as happy as I with the sale.

i hope the foreigners understand that they have to respect every single thing in bali. not just bali, but other province in indonesia and other country in the world too. do not ever complain about the traditional stuffs (ceremony, etc) because it could be really disrespectful and indonesians trying as best as they can to not offending other tribe. follow the traffic rule (use helmet, and if u cant ride motorcycle--or yall often call it as scooter, then dont rent it and just use grab/gojek/uber. not that hard), follow the health protocol by using mask. i dont care if you dont like it or not, just.. do it. just wear it. it's not that hard and it wont make you poor instantly. some indonesians now dont really like foreigners especially humans from australia, russia, and the united states. cuz they be making problems and they often doing racist stuff to locals. isn't it funny? you're being racist to the local? arent u afraid that they could just report u to the cops? oh of course not, why would you be afraid? you have money. some of them are being disrespectful even to the cops. THE COPS. wow. where did yall get that bravery? indonesian cops are not the same as american cops. most of them are not racist and they are still poorer than you thought cuz cops' salary in indonesia is not the best. do not, i said DO NOT ever work in indonesia or in this case we're talkin about bali if you're there still as a tourist. it's illegal and you dont know the impact for the locals. you'll close their job opportunities, because you guys have privilege where indonesians can just recruit you easily since you're white. am i lying? no! it does really happen in real life. so, what i want to say is. you can come to bali, you can come to lombok, but dont bring your shit personality here and make a new struggle for this third world country. we are already tired of the corruptors now if you test us with your hard brain, then better not to come here. do not be the bad impact for the locals. sadly, no matter how stubborn you are, no matter how disrespectful you are, indonesians still will welcome you. im saying the truth. we got colonized because of this mentality. and now we are in modern imperialism by you all. i hope the imperialism will give us the good impact.

about bargaining things, it depends on what u bargain. mostly in tourism spots or areas in Indonesia, the prices of some things are more than twice or even thrice than normal. so for instance if the stuff is priced 200k, you actually can bargain it to 50k and the vendor is still gets profit. but once against, depends on what stuff u gonna buy. stuffs like (most type) of batik are indeed expensive, so dont bargain too much, but t-shirts, keychains, fridge magnet or some sort, u can bargain it like half the price or even more sometimes.

If you start bargaining and the vendor agrees your offer, don't think you can walk away and think about it - you have done a deal and in many cases they will follow you to your hotel - if you employ a driver to take you around always agree a price with no stops...it will be more expensive but you won't be dragged around art shops etc.
