13S Space Operations Officer. (They're in the SPACE FORCE!)

The United States Space Force is the primary service for the 13S Space Operations Officer. Much like pilots, they are operators in addition to being officers and responsible for the control, acquisition, and sustainment of space assets.

    How do 13S officers do promotion wise? Is making O-6 harder than other AFSCs?

  • @airforceofficerpodcast

    @airforceofficerpodcast

    2 жыл бұрын

    making O-6 is hard no matter the AFSC. first you have to commission, which is difficult in its own right. then successfully promote up to O-5, which may take around 15 years. by that point, 70-80% of officers have either separated or retired from the Air Force. this leaves the last 20% to compete for O-6. of that 20% around half may be selected for O-6. TLDR; any new LT entering the Air Force will have about a 10% chance of making O-6.

    you can see the list of degrees that qualify for each AFSC, including 13S, in the AFOCD: www.milvet.state.pa.us/DMVA/Docs_PNG/hro/AFOCD.pdf we've interviewed two 13S officers. just haven't gotten around to posting them to KZread yet. www.airforceofficerpodcast.com/blog/028-13s-space-operations-officer-with-capt-cj-carlisle www.airforceofficerpodcast.com/blog/048-13s-space-operations-officer-with-capt-matthew-folks

    Technically speaking, you could still commission into 13S with a non-STEM degree. But it is true 80% of 13S slots here at USAFA is allocated for STEM majors

    I will be commissioning into the Air Force this year and am currently an TSgt. I am slated for a Civil Engineering position but would like to become a 13S. I already work with 13S at my civilian job and want to have both my Civ job and Military job build upon each other. Is this possible? How to I find and available 13S position near me?

    I have a BS in cybersecurity (GPA 3.9) and a comptia CYSA+ with a couple of years experience in IT. Do these matters for the space force to make me stand out at all? I spoke to a recruiter and they said it might take up to a few years to get me in. Is that true? The communication with the recruiter has been really tough.

    the degree and GPA *might* help you stand out, but i doubt it. everyone in the Space Force, especially in the cyber career fields, is brilliant. it’s everything else that will likely have to make the difference. the recruiter didn’t lie to you. it will take minimum 18-24 months to get you selected and commissioned. recruiters are incredibly busy people. stay professional, but don’t give up on them if this is truly what you want.

    Can I get a major for space operations then go on to become a pilot. I’m 16 and I’m most interested in flying jets for the air force when I’m of age. Can I purse the same pilot career through the space force? What will the space force be flying?

  • @airforceofficerpodcast

    @airforceofficerpodcast

    2 жыл бұрын

    there are no pilots in the Space Force. at least not yet. it is possible to get space ops in the Space Force and then apply to a rated board to become a pilot in the Air Force. this would be exactly the same process as if you were an officer in any other Service (Army, Navy, etc.) and then wanted to become an Air Force pilot.
