I think when the queen dies, there will be a huge outpouring of grief. Most people in this country have either known the queen as monarch for all their life or for a large chunk of their life. The Queen is hugely admired and respected around the world. It will feel very strange for a lot of people here to not have the queen as head of monarchy. Britain will not feel the same without her. She is a unique gem.Long live the Queen!

Dilly, I believe that will be a deeply traumatic & introspective moment; across much of the Commonwealth. We will see & hear the Social Media Mob, but the real people will mark this in a dignified way (the "Hollywood Royals" will attempt to hijack it) and that is what we all should cleave to.

Hi Lillian & Felipe, at the end of the Royal Command Performance, all the acts gather on stage to sing the finale outro, such as "there`s no business like show business". Then, a tribute to the Royal personage in attendance, led by the personality/presenter of the evening. Those people who had their hands on each other`s shoulder`s were I believe (The Crazy Gang), who were a popular comic troupe of the time. I`ve only ever seen them before in programs about the comedy of the period.

I was surprised that two professional singers didn't comment - I think didn't even notice! - that, over full orchestra and massed chorus, little Julie's voice was still clearly audible on that last line (she went up when the tune went down on "the King").

This was in the late 1940s when the country had just come through the Second World War, producing a stronger feeling of patriotism and social cohesion, and King George VI was loved and respected as the figurehead of the country during that trying time. I have watched this video several times over the last few years and always find it very moving, particularly when the whole orchestra, company and audience come in for the second half of the verse. Incidentally, there are some great musical performers to be found in the British Pathe archive, e.g. to name just a few of my favourites: Al Bowlly, Teddy Brown, Malcolm MacEachern, Elsie Carlisle, Lily Morris etc.

I think Felipe is pretty spot on in his analysis of the UK then and now regarding the Commonwealth - for instance, countries like Australia often refer to us as "The Mother Country". Although I'm a Royalist, we've been watching the Netflix series "The Crown", which begins just before the abdication of King Edward viii (David) when his brother George our present Queen's father had to take over. Although I feel we've been fortunate indeed with our Queen, the series does highlight hers and many other Royals' lack of empathy, especially for instance, Charles, and to a lesser degree his 3 siblings. It is worth a watch; historically its obviously a little fluid because you have to guess how conversations actually went. I see another side of the coin which has cast a whole different light on certain members, especially the way Princess Diana was thrown right in at the deep end, and how, when she proved popular with the people, those in the Palace wore that horrible cloak of jealousy. Thank you for the video.

  • @stuartmenziesfarrant

I agree with Susan up to a point. Princess Diana really wasn't ever a good 'fit' for the royal lifestyle and was a result of Prince Charles not being able to marry Camilla Parker Bowles. For me the royal family started to deteriorate along with British society from the 1960s. The queen being the last champion of that previous era.

Food rationing was still going ,, and the 2nd world war had only finished a few years ago so the atrocities of the 2nd world war would of been still fresh in these peoples minds ,, every one in the audience would of served in some kind of the military ,, navy,, airforce ,, marines ,, etc etc ... defending our nation .... Don't forget thet Britain lost one and a half million young men in a period of just 30 years to war and bore half the total cost of those wars as well. The country was literally exhausted and bankrupt but still carried the responsibility of being the Western World's second largest defender, after the US, throughout the Cold War and even today in NATO. Society moves in pendulum like movements and just as the debauched Regency/Georgian age was replaced by the Victorians the Hippy Apocalypse that arose in the Sixties is now at it's peak and beginning it's slide into the pit.

1948? A different world to the one we presently live in, and doesn't it show? Life back then was far from perfect, I'm sure, but the sense of community among those who you lived next to was very much a part of an ordinary, everyday existence. People were less insular and actually had a genuine interest in their fellow man. It would appear that an increase in wealth and prosperity has made people more self-interested, which is kind of the opposite of what you might expect. Particularly since the 80's, where the Thatcherite way of thinking, 'all for one and everyone for themselves', became prevalent. Ever since then, things seem to have gone downhill as far as community cohesion is concerned. It's all about how much you can make for yourself at whatever cost. The television programmes over the last 20 years has exemplified this. All about, 'celebrity, fame and fortune', through largely superficial means.

The differences were astounding . Those times will never return of course perhaps because the reversal would be so huge .We can only go forward .I was born in 1948. No matter what the newer P.C. values bring about those values will be tested with world events plus the values of different societies will need to interact without which progress will be further stunted and possible clashes ensue. An example is perhaps showing now with the rise of far right politics in Europe which by definition clash with these newer values of todays generation in Britain especially.

Only if viewed very narrowly, in context it's of course very different. No one here was forced to respect the sovereign, it was out of tradition that people respected him not fear. And in the case of George VI, it was the added knowledge that he was clearly not at all 'well suited' for the demands that were thrust upon him. Both the people and the monarch knew very well that the public's respect and deference were dependent upon dignity and needed to be earned, otherwise public support could easily vanish (as it still could). And that the Parliamentary Democracy which supports the Monarchy (not the other way round) could be taken away at any moment. Back then as now, the free press could and would routinely mock a deride any royal including the monarch and be supported by the people, if it was justified. None of this is even close to true in North Korea. So just looking at this tiny snapshot is unrepresentative of the whole truth. The respect shown here is earned and given freely, not demanded on pain of death.
