13 - What is Surface Area? Definition & Meaning - Calculate Area of Rectangle & Units

More Lessons: www.MathAndScience.com
Twitter: / jasongibsonmath
In this lesson, you will learn what area is, why surface area is important, and why do we need to calculate area to solve problems. We measure length in inches, centimeters, and meters. Area is measured in square inches, square centimeters, and square meters. We find the area of an object by determining how many square units fit on the surface. That is why it is called surface area. For rectangles, we can find the surface area by multiplying the length times the width. For circles, the area formula involves Pi and is A = Pi * R^2. There are related equations for area that apply to other common objects such as the area of a square and the area of a cylinder and the area of a triangle. Area is used extensively in Geometry and Calculus.

Important concept. In my school days I didn't have an Idea that an area was composed of smaller or unit squares. We can use distributive law to better visualize the concept of an area. Eg 2cm×3cm= (1cm+1cm)3cm=6cm^2. Reading is to speed Writing is to remember Practice is to fluency.

now iive just acquired the basic idea of unit² (or square unit)...before i only knew in terms of area, unit is just a square unit and in volumr, its just a cubic unit, thats it...but now you opened my eyes...thank you so so much ..

Thanks for your contribution to math and science Jason.Years ago I bought your dvds on how to hp50g and trigonometry. Great dvds, back then your favorite calculator was the hp50g. What is your goto calculator today? Also what its your iq? I you must be a genius.

Thanks so much! Well I still use the HP50g! I haven’t had my IQ tested, but honestly it probably is not anything special. I think I’m just decent at explaining things because I was always that kid in class that never understood what was going on. Took many years to “get it” and it didn’t come naturally to me. Thanks again! Jason

A = L•W A = (4cm)(2cm) A = 8 cm^2 Students find the answer to this problem and quickly think they are a mathematician WITHOUT knowing what they found. They have no idea what 8 cm^2 means. Teachers in today's world are pressed for time. Teachers are told by their bosses to teach to the test, which explains why students can pass exams by simply memorizing steps. Memorizing steps is not learning math correctly.
