13 Types of Conveyor Belt Damage

Ғылым және технология

Conveyor belting is critical equipment at any mine or process plant. A lot of conveyors we work on have belts that would be considered “in poor condition.” When belts have damage to the top cover, it becomes difficult to scrape carryback and challenging to control dust, leading to belt mistracking problems.
Premature belt damage increases the overall cost of operation due to belt replacements. Lots of facilities don’t recognize the difference between normal belt wear and belt damage. The biggest difference is that belt damage can be prevented.

I am working on a machine learning project where my model learns to identify these faults in conveyor belts. Could anyway kindly sugest a link with a datset of images so I can train my model

Hello Jerad I dont agree with the 2 areas of heat damage. To me it looks like soft skirt damage over historic heat damage? Ot the heat of the product has caused the soft skirts to damage the belt more in the skirt line?

Hi Mark, thanks for the comment and thanks for viewing the video. I certainly agree with you that skirting could create belt damage. Especially if the skirting used was not specified correctly for the application. If I recall this photo correctly, this plant did have severe enough mistracking that it did cause the belt to run into structure. That may be the reason for this damage, but it may also be due to skirting problems. Most likely, it's probably some of each. I should add that it's our recommendation to place the skirting system a bit further in than the very outer edge of the belt. The intent for this is to allow for what we call "free belt edge." When sufficient free belt edge is taken into consideration, it allows the use of a dual-lipped skirting system. Dual-lipped skirting systems will contain dust better, when dust is an issue. In a new installation or an upgrade, we would typically narrow the chute wall a bit to allow the skirting to not lay so close to the edge of the belt. I don't know if that was the case in this application. If it were, the the skirting damage would be more noticeable about 2" in from the outer edge of the belt. Appreciate your input!!

How about a belt that tracks centered on the pullies until its loaded, then tracks to one side?

When a belt tracks correctly unloaded but then mistracks when cargo is added, it's almost always a loading issue. As a belt is loaded, the force can push the receiving belt to one side or another. This is typically observed by the cargo settling to one side or the other of the belt. Segregated loading can also cause problems when large pieces of cargo and small fines are conveyed together, often before crushing or other processing. It's most common on perpendicular transfer points. Each of these problems can be avoided. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us to schedule a meeting via Zoom if you'd like to discuss further

How to identify our belt running is in over tension

The best way to identify that a conveyor belt is over tensioned is to observe it while running without cargo or material. If the belt elevates or rides up out of the troughed rollers or idlers, then the belt is most likely over tensioned, which will lead to belt cupping.
