13 source cheap rubber parts (Fix the Tascam 244)

Ғылым және технология

Rubber belt kits for the tascam 244 sold on ebay etc which include replacement idler tires and a control belt are expensive at the time of posting this, so I explore adapting inexpensive alternatives from the plumbing trade - neoprene O-rings/Gaskets.
Perhaps a similar approach could be used with Yamaha and Fostex 4 tracks as well?
This is video # 13 in a comprehensive how-to course refurbishing the cassette transport of the Tascam 244 Portastudio 4 track. Check out the whole playlist here;-

Just made my own idler tires using this method, will test in a few days when my capstain and control belts arrive, but there seems to be a lot of grip when I move them manually over the tape rollers

For the 244 control belt, does 45mm refer to the ID or OD? I'm trying my best to get mine working without spending an extra $100 on rubber parts, but I can't seem to find this size in US hardware stores. Since I'm ordering online, I want to make sure I get the correct size.

Outside diameter, but that mechanism is pretty tolerant tbh, a mm or two either way is still going to work. I was buying o ring this size for less than five pounds for twenty pieces.

@@Tetrakan thanks for the response. I found some great sites that ship to the US, so going to give it a shot ordering some tomorrow.

Hey, thanks for making such wonderful videos! Have you considered 3D printing belts and rollers out of flexible filament like TPU? I've got a 246 that needs replacement parts and I'm seriously considering trying it out. If I get that far, and it works out, I'll be sure to share the details.

Getting to grips with 3D printing is at the bottom of my inbox buried under much more tedious but lower hanging fruit, so if you can get to this first I’d be delighted to hear how you did it, good luck.

Hey thanks so much for making these videos. I had a 244 recently repaired that is playing back way too fast and pitch control doesn’t work. I actually had it “repaired” twice, but it’s still doing the same thing as before I took it in the first time. Do you have any suggestions as to what the issue could be? They replaced all the rubber in the machine and it records and plays back fine, just way too fast and no pitch control :-(

Have you checked if the pitch control is connected? It's a three cables - yellow white and purple - which connect via a white plastic plug, it should attach below and to the right if the transport.

You mentioned gbaudio - they have drive belts on www.gbaudio.co.uk/data/belts.htm. There isn't a "size 10" but there is a "BELT10" which is 276mm (internal circumference) x 4mm - is that the right one please? They have confirmed to me that they have supplied this for a Tascam 244 before but also "BELT86" which is 151mm (internal circumference) x 1.2mm so I'm not sure what the other might be for?

Yes Belt10 is the one i mean. I guess the other one is he control belt, though I've been buying rubber o-rings at a few quid per dozen...from experimentation I've found getting a good quality neoprene belt for the capstan is crucial, whereas its a bit of a waste of money to throw nearly a tenner at the control belt.

thanks for the link! I just bough Tascam 246 in good shape but by just opening up the bottom part , I can see that both belt are broken and there is a black goo on the wheels . don't know yet if the rubber-O-rings/gaskets need replacement or not. at the moment trying to source out replacement parts . Does GB Audio reels any other rubber parts for Tascam 246 or just that Belt10 ? any other links for maybe a full KIT ... I am in Amsterdam Eurozone. thanks in advance , cheers, Dimitri

@@jazzroom Sorry, it took me a while to look up my orders and dig out the links. Apart from BELT10 from GBAUDIO, here is what I think I ordered... www.ebay.ie/itm/Tascam-Portastudio-244-Pinch-Roller-Idler-Tyre-Replacement/174065199161 (Out of stock but you may find similar elsewhere) www.ebay.ie/itm/TASCAM-244-246-PORTASTUDIO-CAPSTAN-CONTROL-BELTS-IDLER-TIRES/163645958563 I wasn't sure which to get so I ordered a couple of both of these in case I messed it up fixyouraudio.com/product/pinch-roller-13x8x2mm/ fixyouraudio.com/product/pinch-roller-13-x-7-x-2-mm-for-cassette-players-copy/ but I think in the end I peeled the rubber off the 13x8x2 and put it on the existing brass roller after I cleaned it up I also ordered three of these and I think I used two of them: fixyouraudio.com/product/idler-tire-12-8x18x2-5-mm-id-x-od-x-height/ It took me many days to work out what I needed and find all these so hopefully that saves you some time!

I've found these pinch roller rubbers to be pretty good/cheap: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5pcs-Rubber-13-x-6-x-2-mm-Pinch-Roller-with-Axis-for-Cassette-Decks/264524926095?hash=item3d96ea0c8f:g:wzMAAOSwQKtefyLC They come on a plastic hub and metal pins - which match the 244/246 pinch roller pinhole, they also can be "stripped" of the rubber and use the original metal hub. There's a slight camber to the edge on profile, but nothing serious, it is really very slight. The plastic hub needed a tiny tiny bit of sanding to fit between the roller holder assembly - about 4-6 strokes of fine sandpaper did the job, both sides.
