Aaron Schmidt Much like jazz and classical, metal is a genre for intellectual thinkers. The people who write the music we listen to are often intellectuals and they inhabit the same world we do so its only normal for us to witness parallels in our music and our surroundings.

It isn't a big deal. Music history is full of overlapping eras and everyone just calls old music classical anyways. Classical is a distinct style of it's own though.

Im not seeing enough love in the comments for The Prodigy, especially Keith Flint. He was an amazing performer and he and Liam, Maxim and Leeroy were all a huge inspiration to me personally, and many artists and performers. It sucks to see so many influential names taken by suicide, and it shows that male suicide is still a huge problem in society these days. Rest In Peace Keith, and if anyone reading this is struggling with suicidal thoughts then please don't feel scared or ashamed to get help for yourself. Youre never alone, and the world would probably suck that bit more if you weren't here.

Oh yeah, definitely. If you take more than just a glance at the lyrics of most of the popular hip hop and rap songs from across the past two or three decades, you’ll find tons of examples of influence from metal, classic rock, blues, soul, funk, and other genres of music. Music itself is just one big beautiful endless cycle of inspiration and influence; the popular musicians of today grew up listening to the popular musicians of the recent past, and the influence had is undeniable, even across genres.

Zero Signal. Thank god for Mortal Kombat. Then Slayer from South Park. 4 years roll by, my 1st time hearing Black Sabbath and Ozzy. And then at 15 i pick up Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Later i moved on to punk with the Sex Pistols and Ramones. And finally after getting reintroduced to Fear Factory, i rediscover metal, and been headbanging ever since.

I would argue that position is actually Beethoven's. He was the one that said, "fuck it, time to make real music," and fathered the romantic era because music from the classical period wasn't expressive enough, with all the musical rules that had to be followed and formalities that had to be made. The dude literally reinvented the symphony four times(symphonies 3,5,6,9), so much so that some composers were afraid to write symphonies after his ninth because they knew they couldn't make them as good.

The Thing is: most people who like metal just like good music i.e. music with the use of real instruments and music that (at least for the majority of songs) has some thought behind it beyond making it catchy and marketable. That's why we can also appreciate good music that is NOT metal.

Somewhere around the late 70's or early 80's, I was at a metal concert in SF and the show was late getting started. The setup music was the typical music you'd hear on the rock stations of that time. The crowd was getting restless because of the delay, but they would occasionally cheer a bit if a song came on that they liked. And then, they played The Cars' "Just What I needed." The crowd went nuts! I'll never forget that. I loved metal and I loved The Cars and I was blown away at how many of the other metalheads in the audience were big Cars fans.

That's a fair point, but the only reason I said that is due to how widely viewed they are as very talented and influential artists. So long as you enjoy what you listen to that's all that should matter, support the artists you think deserve it, but don't bash others simply because you don't enjoy them.

I don’t think its bad, look at where a big majority of big bands looked for inspiration. Metallica really liked the Misfits and Samhain and funny because Glenn came from both of those bands before Danzig. I think that we should all be united in a way that we all have the same enemy, which is the mainstream media and pop music. Plus, we have Motörhead and The Plasmatics, lots of punks and metalheads love them. But that’s what I think, no need to take my essay seriously.
