    Odds are you aren’t missing out on much. If you have a phone and a computer, there’s not a ton the iPad can do that those can’t. It’s a nice to have for some people, but it’s rarely life changing or anything like that. And even the more affordable iPads are 95% of the pros.

    These iPads are impressive. The 9 core model (256, 512GB) is more powerful than my M1 Pro (8 core) MacBook Pro 14" in single core (+52%), multi core (+24%) and graphics (+42%). This is crazy. I'm not sure if this will be evident in real world performance since the MBP has 2 fans, much bigger batteries etc and there are other things on the chips other than CPU & GPU (e.g. accelerators and whatnot) but on the face of it, it seems that these new iPad are ridiculously powerful. I still love my MBP though so I will hold it for another year or two and get an M6 Pro 14" MBP.

    Your reviews are great, Faruk. I especially like the unique camera-attached-to-the-pencil-while-it's-drawing footage! About that Nano textured option...Apple's 3D rendered closeup looks like little round-topped micro-droplets (or micro-lenses) on the surface of the glass. Hmmm you can only use the included "special cloth" to clean it... Could those micro-droplets be a "textured plastic" surface applied to the glass? Like the scratch-able exterior plastic surface bonded to the glass "windshield" on the Vision Pro?

As someone who is lucky enough to have most the top Apple products I simply won’t upgrade my pre-M1 12.9 iPad Pro for the very reasons you talk about, the OS and apps are diabolical and make it mainly a consumption device. This review was amazing! I really wish you went into more detail as to why you want the Nano Textured Glass. Every other video I've seen so far has had something negative to say about the NTG (mainly the slight loss of color contrast) so I'm really curious to know your opinion on the matter!

  • @andyH_England

    @andyH_England

    The loss of colour contrast will affect you if you use this for media consumption. If that is your main use case, I recommend something other than the nano texture. However, the nano texture will be beneficial if it is a work device when you are out. I am not sure I would buy it if you are a digital artist.

    @@andyH_England Thank you! I bought the nano texture version because I'll be using the iPad almost exclusively on the go, I'll use it for some media consumption but it's mostly for work. • @andyH_England

    @@felipegimzap I have not seen any reviews of using it with the Apple Pencil, so I could not comment formally. Hopefully, we will see some reviews with the nano texture to confirm. But if you are out and about, the nano texture makes a BIG difference from what I have seen. You do need to use the special cloth (may come with it) as it is designed to keep the quality of the nano texture perfect for years.

    "We need the apps to support this crazy machine". I think this sentence sums up the situation with the iPad perfectly. These are incredible devices and I think the new iPad Pros may well be the ultimate iPad you will ever need that could last well for the next 10 years... ... if it wasn't held back by the software. And no I am not saying Mac OS should be ported to the iPad Pro. But after trying to exclusively use an iPad Pro with M1 chip for about 3 weeks my conclusion the biggest issues are: - file management, external drive support especially in view of managing large numbers of photos and videos in a commercial production is nothing short of torture. - the insistence by media apps to either first import all media files or worse upload them to the cloud before you can work with them counter productive and makes media management even worse. Final Cut Pro for iPad adding external drive support hopefully points other app developers into the right direction

  • @andyH_England

    @andyH_England

    Apple designed iPadOS from the ground up with security and privacy in mind, so apps are sandboxed. Therefore, Apple would need a major structural change to have a file system like on Macs. So, sadly, that is not a simple fix, and I do not see Apple sacrificing security and privacy for a Mac-like Finder. As for apps, MacOS has decades of a headstart; Rome wasn't built in a day. Therefore, buy for what it does now, and new apps will be bonuses. If that is not enough, then buy something else.

  • @TomHofmann

    @TomHofmann

    19 күн бұрын

    @@andyH_England Have to disagree. Apps are able to explicitly ask for permission to access and change files on external drives. It's just that the vast majority of app developers never bothered to update their apps to facilitate this. I believe most developers don't see the iPad as a Laptop replacement but more like an add on. Apple has just shown that it's possible by allowing Final Cut Pro to edit off external drives.

    I’m only interested in the nano texture if it’s almost like a paper like replacement. But then again that’s like a 600+ dollar cost versus a $50 paperlike on top of the screen. I want the iPad for drawing. And I’m upgrading because it’s lighter. But this time around I’m going for the 11 inch.because I found the 13 inch way too big most the time and so I wouldn’t use it that much

  • @cartertg

    One of the other reviews claimed there was no “PaperLike” feel in the nano-textured glass. Add to that, it seemed to have some unforgiving cleaning requirements using ONLY the supplied cleaning cloth. Side-by-side comparison of Apple Store’s XDR Display showed me that while the nano version dispelled glare as advertised, it felt like a niche feature maybe useful in situations where I needed to color grade out in a sunny field. I also didn’t feel like finding out that the nano surface had issues with daily Apple Pencil use a few years down the road. I went with regular glass on my 1tb iPP order.

    Impressive hardware for sure. I am at a decision point for either upgrading to M4 iPad or switch to MacBook Pro. Given the relatively small cost difference between the two, for my use case, the software on iPadOS and the software on it is now the bottleneck, like you’ve pointed out. I might as well get the laptop for its full functionality. If and when Apple, Adobe and other main vendors update their apps to bring them closer to MacOS versions, I might reconsider, but for now, it’s MacBook Pro for me.

    The nano glass seems like a great idea but it dampens the colors on the screen from what I’ve seen

    I'm pretty sure if they wouldn't have added the M4 in the iPad, people would have complained about the old processor. Deep down everyone is happy with the latest and greatest, plus it's about futureproofing it (with the M-lastest any apple device will last longer than with a 2nd gen old processor)

    I’m not interested in the nano textured glass. I’m seriously thinking about buying 13 inch 1TB.
