1:23 knowing Shredder, he really farted in there to assert dominance in their van and to humiliate the Turtles, so I think the animation was made like that on purpose to suggest that 😅😂 being Shredder the main villain (in particular in the first season), he sometimes makes some weird poses and does some weird gestures in order to make the audience understand that he's evil (I recall some scenes in which he throws the middle finger around and makes the horns symbol with the hand, of course as a kid I didn't notice them at all but rewatching the old cartoons now, they are actually noticeable)

I was thinking that as well. Even during a truce, Shredder will find a way to mess with the turtles peacefully.

Something about the duplicated turtles is disturbing to me.

@The Ultra Blader the animation mistakes like duplicated turtles and a lot of others are quite common since season 3 and after it, because starting season 3 they had to write and produce a lot of episodes (almost 50 I think in a single season), because they had to introduce new characters and plots in the show in order for the kids to be more willing to buy the toys, so after season 2 the quality of the story, drawings and animations of the show decreased drastically as the number of episodes were increased

@Liverpool italy I have seen that episode in where Splinter hypnotized Shredder. I think that is the limit in what he can do. I think it was just an animation error. They didn't do any hand signs and say the words.

1:32-1:52 This mistake reminds me of another mistake from the TMNT series of 2012. In one episode, there was one point where Donnie is heard speaking in Leo's voice before Leo got to speak.

0:14 Failed to mention that when Bebop jumps out of the hole his vest is yellow and then 2 seconds later, it's the normal red we all know.

one of my favorite things about 80's cartoons is the wrong voice being used for a character.

To be fair, the plotting, dialogue, and characterization of the first season of the cartoon was vastly superior to every season after it. Which is kinda like how the first movie's writing and direction are far better than that of every movie thereafter. Those initial efforts were great, and much more than one would expect from such a bizarre franchise, which is why they left such a lasting legacy, and are remembered so fondly today.

The reason in both cases, too many critics, do-gooders and parents complained that the tone was too dark and the violence too strong for a kids show. So in both cases the production ordered those things to be toned down for the follow-up releases.

*Long answer:* "Studio animator sometimes bla.. bla.. bla.." *Short answer:* "That's what make them a ninja"

In Return of the Technodrome, the turtles have three toes in one scene

In the early 90s people were writing in to Going Live (a Saturday morning show that featured the cartoon) saying that often, the turtles blink the colour of their masks rather than showing green eyelids. It’s rare, but does happen in several episodes.

Not only is there 5 turtles in that last shot, but Michelangelo is missing too.

I bet alot of their design had to do with making animating them easier. making them look similar, but having different colors. that fact that they’d mess up on those basic rules, and especially having more than 4 turtles at a time on screen, is astonishing.

Ya, it really makes me wonder how the animation process went. I could see duplicates happening if they worked on the turtles separately and then composited them into the same frame near the end of the process.

hey man! give them a break! animators at the time were severely overworked and underpaid, especially with how tedious the animation process was with the technology available. often times the cells would be colored without the context of the rest of the frame, so it's likely it was just a management error. they did their best !!!!

Right! I remember when I was a little kid watching this. I was a fan of the show, and I forgot all about these things. I was so confused and I didn't know what to think about it. Being a kid I couldn't understand why there would be any such mistakes like these in a show. Because nobody talked about it. That was why. Now I understand better that it happens. We're all human beings. But glad you pointed it out. Still! These animators should watch their work better.

I'm shocked I never noticed, any of these mistakes as a kid. Because I watched that cartoon religiously as a kid.

Thanks for pointing out some great goofs! A couple of them I hadn't caught before! Just a point of clarity, the episode "Get Shredder" is from 8x01 (the first Red Sky episode). The S1 episode you are referring to with the Bebop/Rocksteady fight is called "Enter the Shredder" (1x02).

This videos great but you missed in the first episode of season 2 when Shredder makes a plank fall onto Raphael, theres a voice mix up and Raphael makes like a girls moaning sound it's hilarious.

Yeah regarding Splinter looking angry before the episode begin I really believe that he must have yelled at the turtles

I'm surprised that you didn't mention "Super Rocksteady and Might Bebop" which is almost completely filled with errors. There's a portion where the travel pod from the Technodrome skips frames and magically falls into a Dumpster which it was clearly going to miss. There's a scene where Krang has human-looking eyes with blue irises. There's the part where Shredder dances with the "super-mutants" and then immediately gets up and dances with them AGAIN. Those are just 3 amusing errors in that ep. There's another one in the ep where company CEOs are being hypnotized by Octopus, Inc. When the Turtles go to rescue Casey Jones, the entire shot is completely stiff with NO animation except a pan across. (I forget the name of that one.)

you could excuse the animation mistakes but what about the mis timed voice work? The voice director should have saw what turtles were on screen and who to voice them.

I know this is about the 1987 tmnt but in the Nickelodeon’s 2013 tmnt S1, E17, (espisode name: TCRI), time stamp 16:30, Donnie’s mask is blue instead of purple. And you can tell it isn’t Leo because he’s in the background holding his swords.

Error in the episode Green With Jealousy. After both Leonardo and Donatello pop out of a submarine hatch, either the pair swap colors, or they both speak while using each others voices!

You forgot to notice the last mistake also has 2 red bandanas.

The reason why is pretty simple. Nobody really cared. Quality control wasn't a main priority back in the 80s with their Saturday morning cartoons. Most of this was animated in some 3rd world country, and not in-house. The main thing they cared about was pumping them out. Quality animation didn't come until the 90s with the Nicktoons.

Ah, the joys of watching these as a young child and forgetting 95% of its content right after the show ends 😂 all I remembered was "Leo, Donnie, Raph and Mikey were awesome and kicked some villains' tails!" Having multiples of each character only added to the fun, I guess it was their way of using kagebunshin (shadow copies) haha

I can forgive the original animators in the pilot for not knowing context and still being new.

Sometimes Donnie’s mask is pink but rarely a bluish color. The pink mask makes him look like a girl if I’m being honest.

When defending this show against obvious problems like these, I use the argument that people still like this show all these years later for the same reason people still like the Adam West Batman show all these years later--which, let's face it, that's what this show basically is in animated form.

Any other cartoon in the 1980's can have these sort of animation errors (just look at The Transformers, as Leo with the top of his head missing has nothing on that scene from The Search For Alpha Trion where Optimus Prime is missing his mouthplate).
