12v71 detroit diesel mc6 bus test drive

We get to go for a test drive with this 12v71 buzzin dozen in this MC6 bus. He’s got a lot of work ahead of him, but thanks for the test drive. 18:23 we get on the road and turn up the volume.

In 1973-74 I drove these Greyhound coaches from San Luis Obispo to San Francisco. The schedule originated in LA. They had the V-12 in them and would climb Cuesta grade in 3rd gear at 45MPH. The best speed you could get out of a Scenic was 32MPH in 2nd gear. I loved driving these MC-6's:):):) Another thing I found about driving these, is you don't have any sensation of speed. you'll be driving 65 MPH, it feels like you are barely moving. I had a local run, lots of freight, easy on the back. You didn't have to bend over much, like doing freight in a Scenicruiser.

And, as others have noted, he wheels it like a boss. Once he gets the throttle fixed, he'll be shifting it like he's been doing it for 30 years. I'll bet he gets it made into a nice house, too. It's in great shape on the outside, so he can concentrate on the interior. Most of those old Sixes look like they've been through a couple of wars.

Wow! Started with Greyhound Canada in June of 1969. President of greyhound Canada was Bob Borden. He was so proud of the MC6. Us guys on the “spare board” did not get to drive them as they were usually on “regular” routes Calgary to Vancouver. I got lucky one day and was asked to drive one from Calgary to Vancouver that had brake problems! Taking it there for mechanical and break work for sure. Drove west through the Rockies, Rogers pass and the dangerous Fraser Canyon! Remember at that time very new exciting coaches. Needless to say. The trip through the Rockies with poor brakes was exciting. But empty with no passengers no problem. Stopped just west of Kamloops at a fruit stand and bought a big basket of fresh bing cherries to munch on as I drove the Fraser canyon. A trip I will never forget!! Would love to drive one again! Any in Western Canada?

I love the MC-6. Rode a couple when they were in US 'Hound service. They hoped for them to be the replacement for the Scenicruiser, but they couldn't get operating permits for the 102" width everywhere. Ended up running them on oddball routes where they were permitted. When they got overhauled, they got 8V71 and Alison automatics. They also (stupidly, IMO) lowered the suspension a few inches to clear the roof at the LA terminal. They should have put in a switch to allow lowering in and out and restore normal ride height underway. The lowering was not good for the ride and handling. The Canadians didn't have those issues. Theirs stayed 12V71 and manual trans.

Mercmad..... and these are "castrated" in these applications.... the sky was the limit (within reason of course) in On-Highway truck and marine applications. The 2 cycle Detroits (especially the Series 53 and 71 engines -this V12 is a Series71-or-71ci per cylinder) are very easy to make lots of power with, like "mouse motor" Chevy's are. The Series71 Detroits (like this engine) only have a 4.25" bore.. the same as a 400ci sm. block Chevy.... and a Total stroke length of only 5"...Total - keep in mind that these are 2 cycle, so from the total stroke of 5" you have to deduct 1" for intake port uncovering approaching BDC, plus (I forget the actual, exact amount at the moment) "approximately" another 18-20 degrees of crankshaft rotation for exhaust valve opening before the ports are "uncovered" by the piston, so these engines are actually producing the hp and torque they do, with Less than 4" of piston travel, and "Only" (small compared to the 4 cycle Cummins, Cat. & even the Mack, truck engines) 4.25" bore.

Good base for a conversion. That 12v71 really winds out good. Bet it pulls pretty hard compared to some of the others. Part of me would love to have the 12v71 but part of me would almost rather have a 6 or 8 for the increased mileage. But there is a tipping point in weight where the 12v would be more efficient. although I wonder where that would be. almost everything I see for sale is 8v71 either normal or turbo. Quite a beast! I drove an MC6 V12 for several years in the early 80s for a charter company in the LA area. Much of it was interstate and across country. Top RPM for 3rd gear was around 62 mph. 65 mph seemed like 50 mph in other coaches. And, you sat higher than any other coach on the road. A bygone era!

They visited the charter operation which my friends family owned, and arrived in a nicely refurbed MC6. (around 1983??) The bus was owned by a Christian ministry so the phone # was on the side & back of it. I had at least six people cuss me out going up the interstate plus the ministry ‘s office phone was lit up with nasty messages. It was a pre- computer 92 and the bus had been in the shop for a Diesel tech to address all the black smoke . He claimed it was normal. The 92 mated to a 740 Allison was a total pig. When they built those here at MCI, the shop employees would all grab a side, lift it up and slip the body dollies underneath. Of course a bare shell, but still heavy. These are before my time, glad he has one with the V-12. U.S. buses were converted to V-8s, Canadian ones kept the 12s.

Love the oldies, but I'm amazed at how many people buy them without having much mechanical knowledge or experience, and just bumble their way around. This ol' boy definitely has good luck on his side, because buying this bus and showing up without even a screwdriver to drive it 1000 miles home is just asking for trouble. It makes me cringe when people think they have to run it up to top governed speed before shifting. Really enjoy listening to that big ol' 12 …. just wish it got better treatment.

I was hooked at 12v71. But I still hold onto my dream of shoving an 8v92 twin turbo in the back of a Scenic. I got to drive a Kenworth with a twin turbo 8v92 under the hood in the late 90's, and was impressed with how well mannered the engine was as compared to its older little brother. It also got better fuel mileage than the 8v71, actually breaking over 6. I wonder how easy it would be to replace the 4 speed with a 10 speed.

Awesome! I've seen a few MC6s, but never one with the 12-71. Aside from the hunting when cold, it sounds great! I've had throttle problems myself, but would highly recommend an air throttle. Also that really simplifies the linkage if you go to an automatic. Have you ever converted bus air to R134a? I've done Model 05 and 10 Eagles, by simply tightening up the leaks...mostly with new hoses to the evaporator and new O rings, then loading in a jug of 134a. Works really well! If you wish, a dab of Permatex HVAC Blue on the flare works great! Brings back stories of my own conversions, and going to work for a bus company to learn from the "old timers" about maintenance...not dreaming at the time that I would become a serial bus owner/converter!

COOL! Had heard about the MC-6 originally having a 12V-71, but I think all the ones in the US got replaced with 8V-71's, and it didn't seem there was one with a 12 anywhere. Had been long hoping to see/hear one! Interesting to hear an MCI in that pre-MC9 design with something other than an 8. (and 12 sounds for the most part like a 6, and the only pre-MC9's using 6's were the MC 1 and 2 -which no one seems to have even a picture of anywhere, and the MC-5c, which is really a contemporary of the MC-9.

Eric B.... All the US MC-6's Did have the V12.... while they were in the eastern portion of the US, then later they were all transferred to the west coast (CA.) and were subsequently all repowered with 8V92T's.... I have all the data on them, but not in front of me at the moment, and I'm not remembering accurately at the moment, all the exact details... it's been "a while" since I've had occasion to even need to think about them. Sorry.

@@jerryvandyke9216... Hi Jerry, thanks for your reply / question. The MCI / MC6 "SuperCruiser's" were All powered with the V12 (Series 71 - NA / Naturally Aspirated) right from the beginning, Except for... one of the Two prototypes, which had a Mercedes V8 (was later, scrapped). Both of the two prototypes had sheet-metal (body panels) covering the Non-powered tag axle.... the production units of course, did not cover them. As far as the use of twin Detroit 4-71N's for power.... you're thinking of the GM PD-4501 Scenicruisers (built between 1954 & 1956). The twin 4-71N's were used because the 6-71 was not powerful enough (at the time) with approximately 165hp with the HV7 injectors, for a coach of that size and it wasn't until 1957 that DD released the first "V" blocked engines, including the 8V71. The two prototypes (GX-1 and GX-2) for the PD 4501's were powered with 6-71N's. Personally, I don't know why GM didn't use the 6-110... it weighed about the same as the two 4-71N's that they used in the production units starting in 1954... about 4000+ lbs, had 275 hp and more torque than the 8V71N had. After the 8V71 was released in 57 and proved themselves, all the PD 4501's were converted to 8-71N's. Back to the MC6.. there were 100 built, 15 remained in Canada and 85 came south to the US. When they were shipped to the west coast, around 1977, they were all converted from the V12, to the 8V92TA (in production from 1974), which probably were rated at 435hp which was only 1 hp more than the rated 434 hp for the 12-71 (with N60 injectors), and the original Spicer and Fuller manual transmissions, were replaced with Allison slush pumpers (automatics). All 15 MC6's that remained in Canada retained their original power trains until retired, so if you see an MC6 anywhere with the V12, it's one of the 15 that remained in Canada.

My guess is the reason it won't return to idle, is because of a sticky pedal from sitting. That's an aluminum pedal, and the pivot pin is steel causing oxidation through electrolysis. The fix? Press out the roll pin that holds the pivot pin in, using a pair of channel locks and a very short punch, pushing the roll pin through the pivot pin. Remove the pivot pin. Run a drill (same size as the hole and not larger) through the holes on both the pedal and the mount removing the oxidation. reinstall using Never Seize. If the throttle was slow returning to idle, I'd say it could be the buffer screw is screwed in too far, however, if that was true, the engine would not be rolling at idle, like it did, so I doubt that's the problem.
