12th Century Troubadour Song "Pax in Nomine Domini" by Marcabru on Medieval Gittern

Музыка

From one of the earliest recorded Troubadour composers Marcabru, who lived in the early 12th century, here is the song Pax in Nomine Domini. Other than the Latin opening it is written in old Occitan and is a Crusader call to arms. From the manuscript Chansonnier du Roi, MS Français 844, BnF.
Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a 5 course medieval gittern built by George Stevens.

Translation (first verse)
Pax in nomine Domini!
Marcabru made the words and the music. Listen to what he tells:
How through His kindness
The Lord in Heaven has made,
Near us, a washing place,
Such that never was there one like it except overseas Way yonder toward Jehoshaphat:
And not the nearby one, I exhort you.
Every morning and every evening
We should wash, according to reason,
I assure you.

Congratulations ! I have the original text and the translation into french. Well the text is at least 6 times longer ... Your translation is rather good for the beginning. And it contains the essential message as in the famous song " O happy day ....When Jesus washed .... He washed my sins away ..." . 🍀🎼🎵🎶

The lyrics seem to be an exhortation to ritual washing. Was it something Marcabru witnessed Muslims doing and so commends it to his Christian cohorts? In a different sense, washing could mean cleansing the soul, perhaps in holy combat against the Infidel at home, rather than needing to go so far as the Holy Land. It's all very intriguing.

As mentioned in another comment it is a much longer and complex song and I only put a translation of the first verse. I have read an interpretation in which the "washing place" symbolizes a chance for spiritual purification, possibly a reference to the Crusades where cleansing the Holy Land was a justification.
