I loved his "Straight no chaser" session. Extreme difficulty meets absolute musicality. Kudos to Kenny!
The best hour on KZread I’ve spent in a long time! Thank you Leland and Kenny!

Ditto! This is really fun and interesting!
I saw 1 hour and 6 minutes....I'm like..."no way I'm watching all of this!".....yep, 1 hour and 7 minutes later....I got sucked in by the whole thing. Thanks Lee!
Lee you have to do a part TWO with Kenny......You boys can talk all day and we will listen! Talk about two of the BEST SESSION stories you guys will have and can tell!!!!!
Kenny is an absolute drumming legend! I was fortunate enough to do a drum workshop with him in Perth Australia about 15 years ago. Awesome experience. Keep in mind, Kenny is 70 years of age and looks maybe 50! He lives well and treats his drumming machine body like a temple. Thanks for being you Kenny. 👍🙏🏻😎🥁
Awesome insight into music business from musicans' standpoint. Leland! Kenny! Hats off to you both! Thank you for your great contribution in music you helped creating. And thank you both for this hour of fun and joy.👏👏👏👏👏
Leland this was so great thank you...always for just being you...Kenny RULES
This was the best video. So personal. All of the shoutouts.. Beatles, Mellencamp, B52s, Fogerty... I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.

This is/was a good fookin 1 hr + interview!
Kenny looks great! Havent seen him and his wife and family for many years! Bloomington!
I use to run my paper route in the early morning with My bag and my walkman with CCR on PLAY........I would know I was close to done when KEEP ON CHOOGLIN came on!!!!! Great memories!!!!!
Kenny’s been one of my favorites for decades. Have lost track of how many times I’ve seen him live.

if there is music, like Lee, Kenny is THERE!!
I can't believe this! I felt the same way about The Beatles/playing in a band at that time! Kenny and I must be about the same age. I still have my same Kalamazoo electric guitar. Only difference is my Mom wouldn't let me go into music because she didn't want me hanging out in bars. So I major in bioengineering, become a doctor, now retired and playing Beatles songs as I watch this. LOL, time flies.
Bloomington, Indiana resident here. Also, a 69 year old drummer. I’ve enjoyed Kenny’s playing for a long time. Not long ago, at a local theater, Kenny (with an Indiana University Rock History Professor) hosted a thoroughly enjoyable evening of stories and some playing. Great drummer, interviewed by one of the best bass players ever. I truly enjoyed this podcast! Thank you!
Awesome. I saw Kenny with Mellencamp around 1988 in Vancouver. About 2 hours after the show ended, I was walking up Granville Street past The Drum Shop, and there he was sitting at a drum kit in the display window looking out at me and he was still playing. Such an inspiration. He was my favorite part of the JM show and I got a bonus!🥁🥁
A rare example but a noteworthy one that speaks to the fact that dreams do and can come true with enough focus and persistence, (along with a touch of luck)! You "gotta love it"!
Saw Kenny perform one of the most unique gigs ever, ... opening drum solo for the Indianapolis 500 Awards Banquet, circa '02 (handing out tens of millions of dollars in checks, rings, watches). Loud, hard partying cocktail hour, in the gorgeous roaring twenties ballroom. House lights dim, ... the program begins as Kenny Aronoff absolutely kills the unsuspecting audience with a great full-tilt solo ... All climaxing with a reveal of spot lights on Helio Castroneves (Indy500 winner) hanging from a mock-up race fence ... his signature post-race Spiderman move. Killer ... Love to know how the backstory on that unique gig.
Oh man!!! Leland, thank you soooo much for taking the time to do this. Amazing. Best hour on KZread.
Leland those boys from Scary Pockets I can tell get the biggest kick that they are playing with THEE Leland Sklar!!!!!!! But they love that you get the biggest kick out of Jamming with them and then you can see the Blend/MELT of just total enjoyment of you all!!!!!
Great interview with Kenny, Leland! I enjoyed the parts about the reality of being in the music business. That is the reason I left the business and became a science teacher. But now I wished I would have worked harder with it.😊
Leland and Kenny: Kids at heart. Thank goodness!
Both you guys legends! Love it! At 56 I’m lucky enough to have been living both your musical lives on the radio. Amazing how many songs, just blows me away. Thanks Leland
Kenny was born on the 7th of March. That's a special day for me as well. Interesting man.
Long ago, I used to play 'The Section' record for guys who didn't know where all the music came from ,,,,,thanks Leland, these vids are great, and Kenny is the work monster!! He makes everyone sound better than they are!!
I read and enjoyed Kenny's book and it was clear that Don Was was an important part in offering Kenny a bucket load of studio work. You can be a great drummer, a great guy but you also have to rely on others to put food on the table. It's a tough life with a lot of schmoozimg and one could also say " ass licking" to get work as a freelance player. Its not for everyone
Kenny I got to see you back with John Cougar 83-84 at the Rainbow in Denver, very amazing tour! Bravo Great Podcast you two! Spectrum is one of my favorite albums Lee. Billy Thorpe was an amazing tour Lee!
Really enjoyed this one...top entertainment from two masters ❤
Wonderful video. Really enjoyed hearing the banter between you two excellent musicians.
I believe the teacher he's referring to is Arthur Press. Kenny went into the lesson and Arthur surprised the hell out of him by jumping on the kit and kicking ass along with a Blood, Sweat, and Tears tune. Kenny famously studied with Vic Firth a little later on, as well.
It seems the Beatles have been the start for many. I probably haven't listened to them very carefully. Time to get into that band.
😂😂. Finally got an external speaker so we could hear/start this, loved the Ringo anecdote.
Two of my favorite cats swapping stories - fascinating! An hour went by in a second! Deep stuff!
Leland asked the questions I wanted to ask. I love when Leland does this.

Outstanding! A great interview. Kenny comes across like a coiled spring….so much energy boiling right under the surface. Kinda a Dave Grohl vibe in that way. Cool.
Fascinating conversations. Thanks for sharing all of your memories and history. Truly a must see pod cast
Love Kenny. Music business is tough. I was on an internet show with Kenny a few years ago. We actually have a lot in common.
😎 Kenny Aronoff! This is SO COOL! Listening to the two of you together talking about your careers is another gold nugget in your treasure chest of KZread videos! Love this!
Fascinating! I did get to see Kenny live with Mellencamp in a club in Indianapolis. Thanks❤🖕❤🖕
REALLY enjoyed that, Lee ! When you mentioned it on the Phil Collins Side B post, I figured it would be a few minutes of chit-chat, but this was a full-on, in-depth convo, almost like being there as it happened ! Thanks very much 👍👍
Recently (couple months ago) saw Kenny with Joe Satriani - Kenny was jaw-dropping great! He was also the friendliest of the band, coming outside in Mpls. to talk to people after the show!
What a great conversation. Felt like a fly on the wall. Love Kenny!!
Never mind musical ability. It’s the shades. That’s the real secret to longevity.
Wow, loved this!
WHen Kenny talks about starting Session playing I swear That is when I started seeing Kenny everywhere!!!!!! I remember seeing Kenny with the PLASTIC MAN SHADES on all those tributes and award shows.
Like you Lee, Kenny is a genius Hall of Fame Musician
This is a interview that I've been wanting and waiting for.Ive always wondered about Kenny Aronoff story is ! When it came to hear it be said that when your not recognized for your work..in reference to you Leland Sklar..I wanted to know who is this bass player I'm keeping my ears opened for you hence I always keep a lookout for you It was all of course of listeningto you on Billy Cobham SPECTRUM album of course.Kenny Arnoff is such a down to earth 🌎 and humble person. Thank you for this great interview. I'm still not finished with watching this.Great stuff. Now I'm in the know about Kenny Aronoff he is a great character...drummer 👍.
Such an amazing conversation to watch. Two of the best. I have to be up for work in 5 hours, but I will not stop watching this. Love it!!
"Dude, do you have to play so loud!!!" - I'm putting that on a t-shirt. Thank you for this wonderful sit-down with Kenny, one of my favourite drummers.
Dude’s that was a totally badass interview. Thanks so mush to both of you. Aronoff is a goat. 🐐
Your interview with Kenny Aronoff certainly captures his passion for music and his love of life. Fab4forever.
Lee, I’ve been watching your channel everyday since you started and have absolutely enjoyed all of the episodes, but this, for a lack of a better reference “Rick Beato” long form interview with your peers was amazing! Please do more of this kind of stuff. The deep dives like this are so cool, I can relate so many of the stories you’ve told in previous posts to interviews like this. I can’t imagine how cool this format would be with everyone in the immediate family ??

@@donjarvie5075 , Lee and Kenny get into the subject of serving and supporting the song and bringing out the best in the song (and the sidebar subject of working within the framework imposed by the other personalities involved), which is something I don't see very much from Rick Beato. The technical parts of playing are of course important, but as a very amateur guitarist (and now arthritic) who never expected to develop into a skilled player, I'm more into music as *communication*. My attitude towards musicians is pretty much the same as my attitude towards authors of fiction: never let technical proficiency get in the way of telling an interesting story in a way that resonates with people. It bugs me that Rick never talks about lyrics. Harmonies and how the vocal parts fit together, yes, but not the actual words themselves or what they might mean; I guess it's just not his forte', but really, how can one discuss, say, Joni Mitchell without delving into lyrics and meaning?. BTW, I used to see a lot of fusion bands when I was younger and I've listened to a fair bit of instrumental music, but the guitar-based instrumental music I am drawn to will invariably have strong melodies that often have a vocal quality. I don't really share Rick's affinity for bebop-informed jazz, nor 80's metal; I'm more of a roots-rock guy at heart and although I listen to some very accomplished, iconoclastic, unique players, they're all about the song first, and technicality second. PS, in my opinion Rick tends to interrupt his guests a little too often.

Check out Beato’s interview with Steve Luthather, Rick couldn’t get a word in. Some interviewers focus on certain topics. I don’t think many could have pulled off the Pat Metheny interview as well as Rick. Lee interviews as you say more about the song. Their both great at what they do in my opinion.

Good idea!!
I was here, but am back, now that my brain is more coherent than it apparently was back in March. 😅 I bet I started feeling so much better just listening to this, y'all taking my mind away from a ton of unbelievable anxiety all day, that I just let go of all the other chaos and went to fun music stuff, things I'm really into, and drifted away. Loving being fully alert and undistracted for it now. It's you guys reminding me about my most natural inclination. Music. ❤😊 Keeps me keeping on.
I learned to play for the song from Kenny. 2 artists that come to mind ; Amanda Marshal and Michelle Branch. I studied deeply how Kenny approached the songs on those disks. It’s masterful work. His drumming is so perfectly woven into the songs that it reminds me of Ringo. He’s there yet not there. Never detracting from the music. Yet totally supporting it.

Loved doing Amanda’s album with Kenny.
Some friends and I who were living in Bloomington IN in the early 80s went to a club there to watch this fusion band called Streamwinner. I was totally blown away by the drummer. It was Kenny Aronoff, who I now understand was at that time striving to make it big. Edit: Did some research (memory shifts over time). It was probably 1979 or 1980.
I will always believe that Kenny has the best pocket ever.
I saw Kenny in concert with John Fogerty - man could Kenny hit them skins - he attacks the drums with ferocity, he drove the band and of course John is a brilliant performer, great show! It was Bob Dylan who said to Fogerty "John, if you don't start performing Proud Mary, everyone is going to think Tina Turner wrote it" -- leave it to Dylan to say words of wisdom to someone in need of hearing them!

👍 "On February 19, 1987, Fogerty was jamming with Bob Dylan, Jesse Ed Davis and Taj Mahal at Palomino Club in Los Angeles. Dylan told Fogerty that he must start playing "Proud Mary" or “people would start thinking that Ike and Tina Turner wrote it”. Eventually, Fogerty played the song by request at Palomino."
Leland.......ANOTHER CAREER...Interviewer..........YOU LET IT BREATHE and let Kenny Run with it and ask the right questions when needed. WELL DONE!!!!!!
Leland this is a wonderful interview. This was more fun than you playing records and commenting on them and I wish you would do more like this.
Great interview! You guys are both great, up and down the line and you've both earned your honors for a work ethic that polished the talent you possessed at the outset! Thanks for the insight you provide your viewers. Over the top good!!!
Saw Kenny tonight with Joe Satriani, so much energy! He is 70 years old!
Two of my favorites!! Love this.
No matter how many times I hear his story I love it every time. Kenny's awesome. Also, it was so great seeing you on Scary Pockets. They must really love you because your video is the longest by miles!
Leland you are a treasure to the recording and performing world of music not only for your work as a musician but the documenting of your career and the many people who made the music in either venue. The album Kenny Aronoff discussed was ‘Rhythm, Country and Blues’ is a classic album worth seeking out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm,_Country_and_Blues Thank you Kenny Aronoff and Leland Sklar for your dialogue and sharing it here. 👍 P.S. I liked the baseball bat to the right of Kenny Aronoff and looks like he can use it with skill.

Check out these tracks: Lyle Lovett and Al Green “Funny How Time Slips Away” Arron Neville and Trisha Yearwood “I fall to Pieces” Clint Black and The Pointer Sisters: "Chain of Fools” And many more, Produced by Tony Brown & Don Was
I have a factoid about that photo behind Kenny(left) with the stacked Klipsch speakers. That was taken on Sept 11, 2001 at the studio where my Dad worked in Indianapolis. Kenny flew in to the local municipal airport(Fishers) that morning and they were taking these photos when the "events" occurred. Because of those events, his plane was grounded. Dad ended up spending a lot of time with Kenny that day as (I think) he ended up having to drive him back to Bloomington. I was a 19yo drummer in a popular regional band at the time, which was something Kenny and my Dad talked about. So now I'm 40 years old, sitting at the control desk in my studio, and this pops up in my recommendations. Directly behind me on my nostalgia shelf sits a large framed hand written and signed note from Kenny that reads "Chris, All the best dude, with your drumming + music (happy face) - Kenny Aronoff 9/11/2001"

The Don Was story is absolutely classic.Kenny is a drum legend and keeps adding to his legacy.
Kenny is everywhere!
BTW...the way you described seeing Billy Cobham was just priceless: thinking, "What's the point of continuing?" I think it was Clapton who described hearing Stevie Ray Vaughn open for him the first time, and thinking "It's over. I'm done," or something similar.
Excellent interview Lee. I really enjoyed that.
Love Kenny , just bought his book haven’t read a page yet I have 3 others to get to first but it gives me something to look forward to . And Lee Sklar what can I say ? Love his channel & just can’t get enough of hearing these seasoned vets chat it up about back in the day . Good stuff .
Beautiful, Thank 😊 you!
3 days later, and I've finally seen the WHOLE INTERVIEW... If CBS 60 Minutes was all about music, you'd be the lead story. Great interview with KA. It's great to be entertained and educated at the same time. He's not just a bulldozer on drums; he's a bulldozer in life. Take no prisoners. Great 'tude! Thanks for this one.🎶🥁🎶
Love Kenny since the Jon Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory days!!! Thank you Lee ✌🏻
Love and appreciate you both SO MUCH!!! Your contributions to music are incalculable.
What a story. It`s amazing what goes on behind the scenes.
You’re both heroes. Without men like you all the great names would be cripple.
Awesome chat, guys!
Lee, thank you so much for the Aronoff interview, Loved it.
At 40:39, "Eric Clapton would take care of his people....". According to Albert Lee, he had been warned that Clapton would invariably fire his entire band after a tour, so Albert finishes his 1st tour with Clapton and expects to be fired, and turns out to be the only band member who isn't fired. So later on, he goes out on a second tour with Clapton and once again the entire band gets fired afterward except for Albert. Albert is starting to think that maybe he's immune to that syndrome, but he goes out in a 3rd tour with Clapton, and when the tour ended, sure enough, Albert got fired along with the rest of the band!

@@patm5086 , Albert told us about his Clapton experience at a show in a small club. He didn't seem bitter about it, but at least he was lucky to have been forewarned, and always had it in the back of his mind that it was coming eventually. I've always felt that if you're gonna fire somebody, or lay them off, you should have the balls to do it in person to their face. Giving them a heads up inadvance so they can make calls to look for other work would be nice, but maybe the bandleader figures that the band members just won't show up for the last few gigs if they know they're about to be out of a job. Bob Dylan had a similar reputation; I remember an interview with Caesar Diaz who used to play guitar for Dylan, and when Caesar got sick with cancer and was having trouble with medical bills nobody called him to wish him better health and nobody would take his phone calls.

I also watch an excellent interview with drummer Jim Keltner on KZread; He's another no-nonsense kind of guy who is willing to put in the work and do what it takes to make the song and the artist a success, and has no patience for people who don't put in the work.

Kenny's energy is great..dedicated rocker but can can do everything everywhere *..thanks Lee
Kenny’s comments about how you and he love your craft so much that it’s infectious is so true! Good on ya, both. Thanks for another great video Leland! 🎸🐶
Two legends💜
Aronoff and Satriani must look like twins on stage. Both are members of the late 60s shaved head guy with sunglasses club.

I saw Kenny playing drums with John Hiatt, who is John Mellencamp's favorite songwriter. I think Kenny also did some work with Richard Thompson along the way, although the couple times I saw Thompson with a band it was always Dave Mattacks on drums. IIRC, Jim Keltner also chaired the drums on one of the Hiatt shows I saw. By the way, I know that Mellencamp has covered Richard Thompson's "Shoot Out the Lights" in concert, and I believe I've seen Hiatt with Mattacks on the drum kit as well. These guys all travel in similar circles it seems!
56:07 Got all kinds of visions going on with dinosaurs and Merle and the Mississippi river, and Indiana. That Cobham drum pedal switcheroo! Spaceships, "planes & satellites" "planes & satellites, whoa oh ohoh"
This was so fun. Smiled the whole time.
God I loved the house band that Don Was put together with Kenny Aronoff on drums with so many other great musicians honoring the voice and songs of Gregg Allman at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in 2014. That was one hell of a show, and I listen to the songs from that CD in my car all the time. Kenny is such a superb drummer and he was on top of his game during that show, for sure.
What insight from two of the best musicians of all time. Cheers James.
This was fantastic! More please. 🙂🙂
