Put a tarp on the roof immediately after assembly, to keep the tent cover from splitting where it contacts the metal frame put foam tape on all contact points ,its the heat from the metal that deteriorates the material, I've been using these types of tens for10 years . I know what works .

You mean once the frame is complete you should place a tarp over the whole frame? Also should those long insulation foam pieces that are put around water pipes to keep them from freezing be put on all the steel tubing to help keep the tarps cooler and less prone to tear?

@@Ron_Masterjohn This is the answer. The pipe insulators along the frame and a bit of colored duct tape on the canvas along the ridges as a UV block and it'll last much longer.

Great advice, chainsaw. I intend to cover mine with a tarp and had questions. Some recommend an airspace between to covering tarp and the tent so any moisture that gets in will dry up to prevent impending rot, is that what you do, or do you just cover it tarp against tent and find that works fine? Also how many years do you normally get out of these when using your cover tarp? Thanks for your valuable information.

@@Ron_MasterjohnI think he means cover the fully assembled unit. Just like throwing a tarp over our stuff to protect it, this protects the whole tent.

What kind of tarp? I bought a tarp from harbor freight and one season in the sun destroyed it. It became very fragile from UV damage.

If you take pool noodles and cover the pvc with it before you put the canvas shell on, you’ll never have to worry about the shell wearing thin. I did this with mine and it’s held up (NY state) for 5 years now.

Great info. I would assume just the top trusses and surrounding top of the sides would benefit from the noodles, or do you noodlize the entire frame? Also, 5 years and counting is great, do you cover yours wit a tarp, and if so, do you place the cover directly on the tent, or do you leave air space in between so if water gets in, it can dry out.

I bought 2 harbor freight 10 x 17 portable shelters and made one solid frame out of the 2 my ribs supports are 2 ft. apart instead of 4 ft. made the structure so much stronger and I dont worry about snow load or stability at all ..I have had 15 inches of snow on it and no problems slides right off...Worked out great !!.....I used self tapping screws on the underside of the pipe and it cant touch the canvas at all and I made a platform to mount it on ......And the plus is that I have a whole other canvas and doors for years down the road to replace the one on it right now if it should rip .......the price of 2 shelters was cheaper than buying another manufacture at a higher price .....

I’ve been living in one of these since the first week of December. I bought a few acres at the top of a hill in eastern Ky and plan to build a small cabin. It’s held up quite well through very high winds. It’s mounted to a platform made from plastic pallets, plywood and deck boards. It’s been a blast living in this thing. Planning to make some mods to it this spring and summer.

You are too cool! I lived in a small camper when I bought my property and had to wait 3 years to afford beginning to build a cabin on mine. Once the shell was built I pitched a tent in it to sleep in and stay warm on cold nights. Plus, mice were about so zipped that pup tent good. Everything was done backwards but worked out great. My past 12 years of home improvement projects from the ground up were all debt free. Still not completely finished but it’s an adorable efficient cabin that dreams are made of. I love the great outdoors which gives me all the space I need.

I recently used my warranty for same shed at harbor freight. You have to disassemble your existing unit and Bring it to them to get new one. So call ahead to be sure they have it in stock. Otherwise they don't care if you killed or mother nature did, tgeyll easranty it no questions asked. My local store manager says he recommends replacing it under warranty every 2 years whether you need to or not. This way you're always getting fresh materials and new warranty.

Had one lasted 6 years in ny. Over winters and all. High winds, near an airport. The key is to set it up correctly the 1st time than they last long time. I have shelter logic that needs a new cover every other year. When setting it up use duct tape where ever the tarp touches the metal bars. As like felt paper. Make it last much longer

I out one of these things in my driveway many years ago and just recently took it down. The biggest problem I had with it is one you should head off on your own before it is a problem. After a few years the cover degrades due to sunlight and UV and it starts leaking water all over the place. When I realized this was happening I went to Home Depot and bought a huge heavy-duty tarp that covered the entire top of the garage with a little overhang all around. I used the grommets to strap the tarp down and basically doubled the life of the garage. The tarp was still in good shape when I took it off a month ago. That tarp is much better material than the garage cover.

I just finished putting up a 13’x20’ temporary garage and since I had already assembled at 10’x10’ a couple of years ago the garage went so much smoother. They were not harbor freight though. I have one similar to what you bought. I live in Texas and use it as a hot house in the winter. Well, the temps have dropped down to 19 degree a couple of weeks ago so that is as cold as it gets. Anyway, I looked at buying a greenhouse and also building one. But I rent where I live and decided not too. So I got one from Harbor Freight. One of the lessons I learned was to make sure to use the screw in the ground metal stakes. I also bought an extra bigger one to help it stay down. And a nylon extra duty strap with a ratchet. Works well. But I do have to deal with the south Texas sun and the wind. That was the biggest problem. After the first year the wind and the sun caused the cover to take a beating. So I ended up replacing the cover. It was cheaper then buying a new shed. Not by much and you can find replacements online. If you want to pay a bit more and get a thicker cover, you can. So what I did was buy a plastic tarp to cover it with. I also used duct tape to cover the joints where the pipes connected. In addition, I got some inexpensive cloth to also cover the pipes to reduce chaffing. I secured the cloth with duct tape as well. entrance

Thank you for the update. Excellent tips, that will be helpful to me. I purchased two of the HF portable garages about a year and a half ago, when they were on sale for $160. They are still in boxes inside my garage. I thought they probably won’t be on sale for that price again. I plan to put one at my cabin to keep my Ford 8N tractor out of the weather. We occasionally get some high winds there, so I’ll probably dig holes and put the anchors in concrete. I might make a gravel pad for it since you mentioned ground water getting inside.

I put up a 10'x 10' (Menards). It works great, there are some big cottonwood trees back there so it did get a few holes punched in it from branches coming down in wind storms. I just put an other cheaper tarp over it which I should have done right away to protect the original cover. It's quick, cheap and easy to add this protection. Also easy to replace after it wears out due to exposure in a few years.

I have a 10x20 shelter I bought 15 years ago from Sam's club. All the joints snap lock with a springed pin that I spray with a rust preventive. We only use the roof section as we erect it on our deck in the spring and take it down in the fall. I have found that the tarp material degrades after about 4 years and I replace it. In between for minor wear I use clear flex tape to patch holes and reinforce wear points, it works well, but over time weather and sunlight will degrade the material. As someone who owned and operated open platform trucks, particularly rolling tarp systems, I can tell you that there is no tarp material that will not degrade. On my curtain trailers I would replace tarp cover about every 6 years.

I put one of these up so I could store my tractor project in while I worked on it. I have had it for a couple of years. I had to replace the top once. It started splitting over the pipes. The replacement cover was about 75 bucks. I bought some 3/4" thick stall mats from my local farm supply store. They are roughly 4x6 . I laid them down for a floor. They work awesome. They were expensive but worth it. I also put a dog leash anchor point in the ground on each side in the middle of the sides. I ran a tie down strap from each end of the tent to the anchor in the middle to hold the tent in place.

I owned 2 of them for several years after we downsized to a smaller house with the kids gone. I needed the space for storage until I could part with some of my possessions. I laid down plastic and mounted the parameter of the tent to 1x6's and laid some in between on the plastic and laid 3/8 plywood on the 1x6's and nailed it all together. Once filled it won't blow anywhere. One was on the driveway, so this worked well since I couldn't anchor it (no need for plastic here either). I anchored the one on grass with cheap fence post driven in and tied to the floor. They do need placing every few years. You can extend the life if you throw another tarp over the top and tie off to the ground to double layer the roof. Great video and wish I had watched it before putting my structures. You had some good ideas on assembling.

Good review, Ed! I put one up 3 years ago for my UTV, but now my new tractor seems to have taken it over. As I was watching your installation video, I said "He's gonna have to take those top pieces off to attach the cover!" I remember doing the same thing. Except I had to remove the "SELF-TAPPING SCREWS" that some folks had recommended. Mine has some mildew stains, a few holes poked in it, and some wear after 3 years, but it still has a couple more years left. If I get 5 years total, that's only $3 per month for enclosing a vehicle. When it gets too ragged, I will probably buy another one and just wrap the existing poles with a new cover. Like you, I found that it does need a tarp on the floor. When the ground gets saturated, a cold snap causes condensation and it cain rain inside! Thanks for the tip on the pipe in the roll up door. (Why didn't I think of that in 3 years?)

That kept the snow from pushing in. I mounted mine to 6x6x10' pressure treated rails. that keept it down even in high winds. The screws help keep it together too.

Hi Ed. I have found this to work for me. When you loosen the bolts put your foot pressure on it to get as low as possible. Once you tighten it again use self tapping screws to secure it so it does not lift again. This will help with it rubbing through on spots when it comes loose again. I have also used pool noodle with a cut in it to fit on the top members with ties to help stop the rubs. Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips...very helpful. On the warranty coverage for the heat damage, I wouldn't expect that to be covered, and on the corner fraying, I wonder if that was caused by your constant tightening up of the side. Keeping the material tight certianly males it look better, but it also may be putting too much stress on the area in question. Now to decide on the 20 footer or this one.

Great video. I bought a 12 x 20 from HF. Installation was not complicated. I constructed a floor using 2x6 for the frame 16" on ctr. resting on 4x4 ppt, and screwing on a 3/4" c/d plywood floor. 12x20. I anchored the supports right to the floor with with 1- 3" screw and I was able to reach inder the floor to attach a wing nut and tighten w/o any problem. Total time to complete was 3 just over 3 hours that included building frame. it has a garage door zipper at either end and only included 1 pole that slips in the bottom. So I purchased a 1-6-12' extendable paint stick, and slid that the other door flap. I also purchased 100 ft of nylon rope, used that by throwing it over the garage and nailing both ends to the frame to eliminate the possibility of it getting blown away in a storm. 3 pieces, front, center and back. I'm using it as a portable shop while I build my house. I didn't need or use the tie down stakes, the rope to make the door open, or use any tape to hold it together while building. Having a floor made the job easier, it's temporary, and I definetely would recommend this item that understands that this is a tent, not a permanent solution. So far, it's been through 2 major snow falls ( 17" and 23" ), frozen in ice, rained a dozen times, and stil standing outout any rips. tears, or shredding. If it makes it til September I'm buying a new cover, taking this one, slipping on the new one and putting this one back on over it ( $130.00 ). Floor , screws, rope and paint pole cost $460.00, garage coverpro 12x20 cost $470.00. FYI- the floor was assembled to come apart in 2 pieces. A 12 x 12 and an 8 x12 The smaller one will be the floor of a garden shed, and the larger will be used as a floor section of an outside sauna, so there's no waste here.

Picked this up today, they are now 249. Your video helped tons on the assembly thank you for that. I was feeling your pain on the pipes pulling apart so I black taped the joints as I assembled them except for the ends. Didn't wrap them to tight so they could move and flex. UPDATE: I had bought 2 of these and the second 1 came with bolts for the frame so no tape needed on it. so maybe they will all have bolts now

I used duct tape and one 1/2" zip screw on the bottom side. Still plenty of flex left. Plus for my frame I did 4x4s anchored down with 18 inch pieces of #4 rebar. Shot two 2 inch lags on each side support. Definitely no movement. Had the same tears starting on the same corner spots. Got some of the clear Gorilla tape and went over each spot that was starting to pull apart as well as putting it on the same spots where it hadn't started to tear. Just more reinforcement. My next step will be going to Tractor Supply to pick up enough pallets to give me an elevated floor. They sell their pallets for less than $5 apiece. If you watch for sale, you can get these down a bit. A friend got one for about 160 and O bought a second one for 206 after using a 25% coupon they sent me because I hadn't bought anything from HF in awhile

I’ve had that same portable garage now for about 7 years or so. It’s held up pretty well, though, I’ve had to replace the main top cover once after a heavy snow that was too much for it and tore through (it happened overnight, so I didn’t get the chance to knock the snow off). And the end covers were torn to shreds once in a high windstorm. But that same storm uprooted a lot of trees and destroyed a lot of fences and sheds in the area, so it still fared well considering. The framework has been like a tank. I have not modified its assembly in any way. Would definitely recommend anchoring directly into the ground. Having done so has surely saved mine from worse damage.

After about 14 months in West Central Texas winds I had 3 places wear through on the roof. It wasn't leaking badly but we were also in a drought.. I called my local store and they said to remove all 3 pieces of the cover and bring it in. I did and they promptly gave me a brand new kit frame and all. Took me about 2 hours to remove the old and install the new cover. TIP: Don't allow anything that's inside to touch the cover or it will wear a hole in it. I keep everything 6" away from the edges. Pvc pipe in the door is an absolute must!

I thought about using a tarp floor and elevating the tarp around the edges to kinda ride up the walls about 6-8” and then using thing sand tubes to hold that slack up Ali g the I. Er walls. So when it rains on the outside and tries to seep under walk it will hit the sand first and the tarp perimeters are 6-8” coming over the top of the sand bags. No way for the water to get in if that makes sense

We put the exact one when we moved into our new house. We put cement pillars in the ground 1st and attached it to them 6 in total. We did the duct tape on the poles right away becuse they wouldnt stay in while going to the next. All were taped for added support. I put gravel all the way around and then that 1st summer we had the worse weather, including a tornado came through our town and blasted everyones trampolines out of their yards and wrapped them around yrees and took down many fences and stripped some houses of shingles, it pitted our fence and ruened my garden and all the flowers i had just planted. And ruened a bunch of chairs. I worried sick until the next day i knew it was gone. But when i rounded the cornner of the house i was in total disbelief. It hadnt ripped or moved. Im in my 3rd year and im needing a replacement but under the circumstances of 2 horrible windy hailing summers and 2 wimters w heavy snow fall im really amazed it lasted the 1st year. This time ill cover it w added protection of a heavy duty tarp and maybe the swimming noodles. Not a bad idea. Ty all for sharing. I love do9ng stuff like this.

Began installing on a breezy day, had it all together but not anchored yet, went in for a sandwich, came back and it was upside down on the other side of the truck that was parked next to it! It was fine, I un-assembled, moved to correct location and reassembled AND anchored! It has been Great! I had a few small holes poked in roof from pieces of branches, I just used gorilla tape , from the inside, and it as held up fine! I have been thru a couple windy storms and while it does "bellow", it stays standing. I even went to tractor supply and got some extra anchors similar to the ones included, so far so good! I have 7 years on mine and it has none of the issues you have but I take it down during the summer. I don't use extra tarp, pool noddles, or any of that stuff mentioned below. First off, roll the door inwards, not outwards. Keeps all that crap and water from getting stuck in it. I take mine down in the summer time to preserve it from UV since I don't really need it when it doesn't snow. I can take it down and put it up within 45 minutes. No taping, no self tapping screws needed, and no directions lol. Build the top part first, lift one side up and install the down pipes then go to other side and lift that up and install down pipes. It's easy from there. You are correct about anchoring it. I had 50 lb bags of sand on each corner and it still blew up and against my house. My first year using the supplied anchors had it blown up into a tree. You really need to anchor it WELL or it will end up damaging the vehicle inside of it. If you just need overhead covering of a vehicle you drive daily then leave the fabric ends off and just use the main canopy. This prevents it from being blown around. I was going to buy another one but it went from $179 to $230 or so. No thanks on inflated priced products.

Add braces and cross sections I live in WV where we get slot of wind , snow ECT and mines 3 years strong . I also took steel cable around the side panels to add alot of strength . Aside from one strap that's holding it to my fence that's the only thing keeping it from being taken away and the thing constantly wrestles with 40 50 mph wind and doesn't budge . I would say the uv does more damage but I will inevitably replace with metal panels or something when the time comes . Take care

A tarp over it would have helped a lot. I just bought 2X6 treated lumber and put it along each side and then the pound in tie-downs. Thye work excellently but it took a high lift jack to pull back out when I removed it. I think they are worth it for short team storage ( 3-4 years.. ) Thye cost so much now,. but lots cheaper then pay storage..

I've been very pleased with mine as well but the biggest mistake I made was pulling the trap really tight which was fine at first but after a few years caused the material to tear, probably better off just letting it be kinda lose. great vid thanks for the tips I definitely did the tape trick when I put mine together as I was solo. A custom trick I did as well is run a long slate across the back portion of the tarp because the garage is close to my bedroom window and blowing in the wind would bother me while trying to sleep so I just ran a strip of wood across the rear upright posts to take the slack out, strip across the inside and a few 6 inch blocks on the outside to screw through the trap into the strip, tightened everything up and no more noisy flapping. I wonder if you can purchase just a new tarp as my metal frame is still good but the tarp is showing its age after 4 years in the sun and snow of the eastern PA.

I installed a few extra shed anchors (ground screw type) and went to bed. Woke up the next morning to 60 MPH winds and my "garage" flexing in crazy angles and looking like it was about to take flight. It was clear that if I left it eventually the anchors or straps or something would give way and send it flying away, so without any other option I ended up crushing the whole thing to the ground and cutting it apart with my knife. Super disappointing, but I should have known better than to try and set up something so lightweight where I live.

How about using railroad ties to secure the base frame to? Excavate 3-4 inches and lay your vapor barrier plastic. Install a perimeter frame of railroad ties lap jointed and timber screwed together to which you attach your frame base. Then backfill with fine rocks & dust and tamp it down. The ties provide a weighted base to keep the garage in position, they form a retaining wall for the rock floor which is hard as concrete, and are designed to be water resistant.
