【～ずに】
Verb-ないform (remove ない) + ず(に)
This is used by adding ず（に）after a verb’s ない stem.
友達(ともだち)は、時計(とけい)をみたあとで、何(なに)も言(い)わずに帰(かえ)ってしまいました。
友達(ともだち)は、時計(とけい)をみたあとで、何(なに)も言(い)わないで帰(かえ)ってしまいました。
My friend went back home after looking at her watch without saying anything.
うちの息子（むすこ）はよく考（かんが）えずに行動（こうどう）するんです。
うちの息子（むすこ）はよく考（かんが）えないで行動（こうどう）するんです。
My son often acts without thinking/ My son acts without thinking well.
【～せずに】
Instead of saying しずに, you say せずに “without doing”.
勉強（べんきょう）せずにテストに合格（ごうかく）しました。
勉強しないでテストに合格（ごうかく）しました。
I passed the exam without studying.
ロックダウンの間（あいだ）は化粧（けしょう）をせずに一日（いちにち）を過（す）ごした。
ロックダウンの間（あいだ）は化粧（けしょう）をしないで一日（いちにち）を過（す）ごした。
During the lockdown, I spent whole day without doing makeup.
木を見て森を見ず
"You cannot see the wood for the trees."
To be unable to understand a situation clearly because you are too involved in it

minor nitpick but when you wrote "you cannot see the wood for the trees" the lack of plural on "wood" made it sound like the material made from trees rather than the woods or a forest and made the comparison to the japanese phrase as being the same really confusing at first. It also would've been nice to have an example or two that included the ないで version so we could see how it fits in and get a feel for it rather than simply being told it's the just the same and hoping that means we can simply swap it out with no other changes (or at least be told if there's no changes).

"Can't see the wood for the trees" is the correct expression! A wood is a small forest.

One simple rule that can help you remember which form to use is: ないで is the negative て form, なくて is the て form of the negative, and ずに can be used instead of ないで when the meaning is 'without doing'. なし means "nil"

こんにちは Masa 先生。👋🏼 could you explain the difference (if any) between Verbないで and Verbずに。 Is there any situation where for the meaning “WITHOUT” we must use Verbずに and not Verbないで-？ any special use of ずに over ないで for the English meaning “without?”

Or formal situation like in business! 3. When would someone want to say ずに instead of ないで（i.e. 食べないで or 食べずに）? when speaking to friends :)

@@MasaSenseiWould you mind clarifying your answer for question 1 and 3? In question 1, you said that ないで is more common to say to friends while in question 3, you said ずに is more common to say to friends. The order of my example might have been confusing. 教えてくれてありがとうございます！
