121 - Andrew Farley - The Lies of Distraction (pt 2)

Rick continues his conversation with Andrew with more, including:
- does God "break us?"
- do we have to answer for our behavior at judgment?
- what about “many roads lead to God”?

Again, Andrew Farley is an excellent teacher on the gospel and growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. I've been listening to him and reading his books for many years. I now have so much peace, joy and assurance if salvation and my identity in Christ!!

What this gentleman said about giving up things is the same battle i have about my favorite hobby which is videogames. Now, I'm married to a wonderful woman and have 2 beautiful children whom i love dearly, i work to support my family and love spending my time with them. My favorite people to be with is my family and i cherish my time with them. We have church responsibilities and we always try fulfill those things, but on my free/off time i like to sit back and play games. Sometimes I wonder if God doesn't want me to play games. It sometimes bothers me. I gave up gaming for about 11 years but in recent years I got back into it. I don't play sports anymore, or fish or hunt or whatever else, i like to play games as my hobby. And like they mentioned the word idolatry pops into my mind at times and it bothers me just because I like games so much. I may sound like a child but actually I'm close to 50 years old. I ask God to help me not have any idols before Him. Amen.

You may love playing your games, but you LOVE God above all else. A game is just an activity you enjoy. But God is your LIFE! Anything can be a hobby, but it's just that - a hobby. There's nothing inherently "wrong" with hobbies - video games or cooking or golf... Under grace we get to enjoy the things in our lives, and if something becomes a problem, Holy Spirit in you can talk to you about it. Play away!

What does he mean when Jesus says if you give a cup of cold water in my name you will in no wise lose your reward

I think it depends on what you think the reward is. It's not what we consider valuable here on earth. When we follow the leading of the Spirit, it resonates with our spirit. When we live according to our new identity in Christ, it fits with who we are. Nothing better than being in tune with Him.

Yes, but those are the sins of the past, we come to Christ in true repentance, we shouldn't want to continue to sin, live a life of sin. What your saying is truth but we don't, shouldn't want, desire to go on living a life of sin ....

Yes! And I often ask people this question: If you're honest, how often do you really WANT to sin? They usually think for a minute and then answer that most of the time they don't. Because we have a new heart and a new Spirit, our desires change. We don't want to continue to sin and it bothers us when we do make that choice. That's proof of our new creation heart.
