12 years later, ride 4

[Ep. 977] A ride in 's-Hertogenbosch from the north to the city centre in 2010 and 2022. See also • 12 years later, 10 rid...
What stands out most in this fourth ride of my ‘12 years later’ video series is that the cycle route in the beginning - on one half of a former four lane car road - became a genuine separate cycle way with grass on either side.

Really good to see that some of the grasses 5:20 have been trimmed at the edge of the cycle path but then the rest have been left to flourish for bees and other wildlife.

I notice that some of the old central reservation steel crash barriers were removed at the start, but other parts left behind. I always find it fascinating when infrastructure is changed yet oddities get left for some reason.

It used to be a major road, the N2, but is was replaced by highway A2 five miles to the east. This road was reduced from 2x2 lanes to 2x1 lane and the 'made free' concrete became a wide bidirectional bicycle path. It used to have those crash barriers all over, but they were removed with renovation on the bicycle path side. But the road is on a ramp leading to the bridge. On the opposite side it is much safer for a car to be stopped because it goes down very steep into a military terrain (Fort Crèvecoeur). On this side it's relatively flat.

Really enjoyable ride even with the motor scooters speeding by and piercing the ear drums. Really looking forward to our visit this June and early July.

They really are the worst. And what's more, they seem to often drive very aggressively. Like that last guy at 19:25: absolutely appalling driving.

Funny observation: the countdown lights in Den Bosch seem to be flipped relative to the ones I see in Eindhoven. In Den Bosch, the countdown starts at the bottom right and goes anticlockwise to the bottom left. In Eindhoven, the countdown starts at the top left and goes anticlockwise to the top right.

Not that it matters much, but why does the old route keep disappearing? I noticed in the the previous routes as well, but not as much. Is the old file just corrupted at places? Also, thanks for an other upload, great to see the differences again. And an other day with beautiful weather for riding your bike :D

In the old situation I had to speed up things to 10 minutes and so I didn't always film the most repetitive sections. Also, to keep the files a reasonable size I had to stop filming and start again, but I was sometimes too lazy to stop cycling and that means a few secs are then missing.

This route leads from/to a big bridge over the river Maas. Over that bridge there are quite a few villages who depend on the city for schools and work. All bicycle/scooter/moped traffic is on this route because the other bridge 5 miles upstream is a highway only bridge. Because of longer distance, people tend to use motorized bikes more often. Home school can be up to 15 miles, summer and winter, rain or shine. And less frequent bus connections.

Why there isnt a sidewalk in a case where someone would wish to walk? Doesnt have to be big, but it would be better than having to walk on the bicycle carriageway.

Cycling is so convenient that very few people choose to walk. The occasional pedestrian won't really be in the way on a wide 2 lane cycle path. Well that's my guess at least. I'm not from the Netherlands.

@@symonlibera7011 I am from the Netherlands, and you are allowed to walk on cycle paths outside of the urbanized areas as shown here. As long as you don’t block the path, nobody minds it. Adding a sidewalk just for the occasional pedestrian there doesn’t make sense at all, for the aforementioned reasons.

No it is not : no driving allowed on cycle path ( see the red bitumen and the blue "only cycles allowed " sign @ 13.20 ) as parking on ( both) cyclepath and sidewalk. Technically two fines of each 150 euro ( plus 9 euro handling costs ), but in general only one is issued ( for the most severe and expensive , but in this case both equal ) and formal warning given for the other .
