What is the Black Atlantic? Surely the ocean is blue... In our twelfth knowledge clip, Rachel Gillett explores the concept of the Black Atlantic. Based on the theory put forward by the British philosopher Paul Gilroy, she explains how ships, movements, and ideas transformed the countries around the Atlantic Ocean. This in particularly counted for slavery, which shaped black identity, and meant that the Enlightenment and the ' wealth of nations' were actually built on racial thinking.
