12) Using Indicators for Probability-Based Predictions of Future Price Action in Trading Systems

The key to developing successful systematic trading strategies is to combine 'triggers' and 'filters'. Oscillator indicators can be used as triggers to inform trade opening and closing, or as filters to identify if the market is currently trending or in a trading range. This episode focuses on the use of oscillator indicators as trigger points and considers entry and exit from over-bought and over-sold regions, turning points, infection points, and signal line crossovers.

Hi Julian. In terms of a couple of very simplistic examples, a premise might be "When the market is in a trading range, sell when the price is overbought, and buy when the price is oversold", or "When the market is trending up, buy on a pullback [and when trending down, sell on a pullback]". Usually, they will be a little more sophisticated than this but hopefully, you get the idea. The main thing is that a premise is nothing whatsoever to do with indicators. You just use a suitable indicator to tell you when the conditions of your premise have been met. More coming on this in future videos, so stay tuned....

How to calculate the gradient so that you can identify the inflection?

The best way would be to create an additional buffer in the indicator, calculate the instantaneous gradient and plot the additional buffer (either on its own or alongside the original buffer). How you would do this exactly would of course depend on the specific indicator you are using. So the gradient (derivative) of the original line would then undergo an inflection when the second line either turned up or turned down. This would then make the processing of this in the EA much easier. Hope that makes sense.
