This was so good. "Dylan goes deeper then politics". Well said and so true. It is his lyrics that I have been listening to since the sixties. More importantly it is what his lyrics are about, what are the themes of his songs. Freedom, justice, racism, war, love, hate, survival, independence, birth, death, etc. He can say something more meaningful in one sentence then most can in a whole song if at all. In the opening of "Desolation Row" as an example, "Their selling postcards of the hanging." This line is about a time when there would be a lynching that was going to take place and they sent out postcards letting people know and many of those people did go to the lynching and made a day of it. Dylan describes that horrific barberism in one sentence in the opening of a song. He is also very well read. His speech upon accepting his Nobel prize for literature reflected that. I'll just finish with this. When I was quite young and listened to him alot, the first time I started focusing on his lyics instead of just passively listening, I was never the same again. You have to focus your mind to truly appreciate Dylan. I love the man and I worship his talent. All of what you've said about him is true.

Great comment, Pamela! You hit on yet another reason I love Dylan when you wrote "you have to focus your mind to truly appreciate Dylan". Many people scoff at such a notion, but they simply don't know what we're talking about here, or they are not intellectually curious enough to put in the effort. So be it. But yes, I love the challenge his lyrics pose, the mind focus needed. It is what draws me to certain literary, cinematic, and musical art. Great comment.....thanks again. Jeff

I found this channel a few days ago and have been really enjoying the album reviews. My favourite Dylan studio output is from the first half of the 1980s, while his live performances in the 1993-1995 period are (I think) unsurpassed. The changing of his songs in live performance means a listener can never really run out of Dylan work. Songs you've heard dozens of times before can be heard for real for the first time on a concert tape. It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry was, I once thought, just a filler on the album. I bought a tape from some 1997 show someplace in England and really heard the depth of the song for the first time.

Hi Paul. Thanks for your great comment and kind words. So true about how Dylan can render any of his songs into something very special in live settings. For example, some of the otherwise excellent songs from Empire Burlesque that I thought were horribly produced on the album, like Seeing The Real You At Last, are superb when done live. Thanks again for taking the time to comment. Cheers! Jeff

To me, Dylan's #1 outstanding trait (reason to love), is his courage. He is fearless in what subject matter he'll attempt. What key. What musical time. What instruments get used. He doesn't seem to care if the songs are in fashion at the moment or not. He doesn't care if the listener can't make heads or tails out of the lyrics, not his problem. And he will make lyrics fit into stanzas that you just wouldn't think they could. Radio stations won't play a song over 2:45....Well, let's make em play a 6 minute song then..Courage. He also had, as a kid, the courage to essentially invent this "Dylan" character, roll it out and keep with it.

GREAT point, Bill. That is what I meant when I said he controls the songs, and not the other way around. He doesn't give a hoot about whether the songs are "recognizable from the record" or not. And how about his being the first (or tied perhaps) to put out a double album, too? Cool. As for his "Dylan character", how about when he became that Nashville Skyline guy? Haha. Love it!!

Very good. I would say much the same. You sure got it right when you said that "politics is a religion". That's exactly what it is for most people, just blind unquestioning faith in a political narrative and partisan brand that they've bought for whatever reason...and gross prejudice against whatever and whoever they think doesn't fit in with that narrative...but Dylan goes way beyond politics, and he always has, although political movements tried hard to make him their poster boy. The two things that are most powerful about Bob for me are: His amazing lyrical gifts...and his phenomenal and always *alive* vocal delivery OF those lyrics. He's not sleepwalking. And the other thing is what you mentioned as your number 12...his deep foundation in a kind of spiritual faith that stands in the face of everything life can throw at a person. This is not an easy place here, not for anyone, and you need a lot of faith in something eternal and valuable and true to face it and keep believing it's worth it...and not just fall asleep or grow cynical or get drunk and hide from it to escape the pain. Bob remains true to his spiritual core and his cultural-musical roots and that sustains the power in his words and music. They become timeless. And that is rare.

I don't believe you mentioned that his way of singing his songs adds so much to the quality of the song. Hi Trudy. Yes, his dynamic performance style seems, to me, to reflect the way he thinks about the lyrics at the time he sings them. I'm sure a song he wrote when he was 25 might have somewhat different emphases or poignancies when he sings the same song at age 75, for example. I agree. But I will say that I love to read his lyrics from the page, like reading poetry.....in fact, I get a lot from them by doing so. That is one of the reasons I do consider him to be a POET and not merely a songwriter who writes poetic lyrics.

@@CalicoSilver Oh, I don't disagree that he's a poet. If he didn't sing at all, he'd be recognized as the greatest poet of the century, partly because he's been working for almost a century. ;) It's just that his delivery adds so much more to the lines. Like having a poet reading his own work to an audience. Anyway, thank you for your delivery.

Good topic Jeff! I got into Dylan when I was 13 because of some of the reasons you mentioned. Besides the brilliant lyrics, I loved the fact that you just never knew what you were gonna get from him musically. His live shows are so unpredictable. You may get Rainy Day Women in 3/4 if the mood takes him. Or a rock out version of Visions of Johanna. A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall is a classic from a classic album, but his 1994 version from The Great Music Experience with a full orchestra will always be THE version for me. Have you heard it? It’s not for everyone, but I love it. That’s the amazing thing about him - he’s got a little something for all us fans. You’re right about his politics, too - or lack of. I remember reading an interview where he states that he can see right and wrong on both sides of the political spectrum.

Some great reasons there, but I'll only touch on #3. I read that someone asked Woody Guthrie what he thought of Bob Dylan's singing compared to some of the great singers he heard around town. Woody said Pete Seger was a singer of folk songs but Dylan was a folk singer. That crystalized why I wanted to listen to BD repeatedly but not so much the others. On the All Things Must Pass set, back in the 70s I wore out the first two discs but after listening to the "jam" disc I knew not to bother buying an updated version with more material not included in the original.....

I can truthfully say that I agree with all the reasons you gave! Especially about his performances. Touring all the time AND he keeps his setlists varied! To me that really screams "respect" for the fans. And the value for money he gives with his bootleg series, that shows his respect as well. Same with keeping all his material available, and being passionate about all his songs. Your last points are true as well! Dylan has always had that "faith" element in his music, since the very beginning. He's one of those artists who just spat in the face of the darkness. And you're damn right he's not political! Not in the traditional sense anyway. Those early protest albums were left wing, but then you had the gospel trilogy which expressed some very conservative viewpoints, not to mention Union Sundown! He doesn't just bombard you with his own views like Neil Young or Jello Biafra, he makes you think, and sometimes he gets you to really question and consider your own views.

  • @CalicoSilver

Hi Nick. Yes Dylan definitely seems more interested in actual fans rather than merely the casual audience member (who will likely leave the show early and bitch about how bad it was to everyone.....I've run into dozens of these idiots over the years). As for the early albums, yes I think he was giving the protesty-people something to like at times, but he always included in even those songs a much deeper thoughtfulness than what is found in most protesty songs. And he even was saying goodbye to those folks as early as the final track of Times They Are A-Changin', and most definitely on Another Side. Basically, he turned his back on all that stuff almost as soon as he dipped his toes into it. Not hardly worth commenting on, yet countless whole books have been written about it. Haha!

Hey. I agree with all of your great points. Another reason I would say is that he doesn't reduce himself to the standards of a contemporary celebrity. When he appeared on The Tonight Show, for instance, he never said a word. That, first of all, adds to the mystery you were talking about that helps each individual create their own Dylan (or be lost about who he is which is even better), but it also demonstrates his reluctance to be diminished by those unintelligent questions that are constantly asked on those shows. It's a really clever thing to do. Every great artist should keep their mouths shut when they're not performing 😂

Hey Jeff: Also worth a look: The Aesthetics of Music , by Roger Scruton. I agree with your points about politics. It's gone beyond that. In taking over America in 2020, Global Marxist criminals replaced virtues with values. Virtues are objective behaviors and ways of thinking; honesty, integrity, honor, truthfulness, industry, and kindness towards others. Values can be anything anyone wants them to be. Bob could write a pretty decent tune on that score.

Thanks for the recommendation for the Sruton book. I may have already read it (my memory is getting worse by the year) but will check it out. Good point about virtues vs "values". Don't even get me started on the character deficiencies and corruption of the bought-and-paid-for "leaders" in this country. "Politics" is just a diversion. And Dylan has always been too honest and wise to let politics get in the way of insight. Only those lacking the insight and honesty that Dylan projects allow "politics" to sway them. There are still nitwit puppets of the Left who are certain that Dylan was and is one of them. Anyway, like I said, don't even get me started....hahaha!

I must say I was surprised to hear you saying Dylan is not political. It made me curious about your reasoning behind this statement. I think all themes are political with a certain point of view. Songs about dancing and having fun may be considered an escapism which serves the rulling political forces by distracting people minds from the more important stuff, and let alone when someone sings about war or racism - these are totaly political questions. But I definitely see your point as Dylan not being too specific about who he votes for. For me, the question of war or racism is (or rather should be) deeper than politics as something fundamental and obvious, but sadly, still there are real political forces in action, who promote this kind of thinking and actions. So talking about these topics is against those forces, and therefore is a political statement on some level. I'm not trying to argue, just sharing some loose thoughts with you :) Anyway, realy cool idea for the new theme! I enjoyed this one and would gladly see more :)

"Generous to his fans." I agree. On the other hand, I`m quoting you; "There`s no luckier fan than a Bob Dylan fan." I`d like to make an argument for Grateful Dead fans. All the Dick`s Picks and Dave`s Picks and From The Vault releases and boxed sets, and like you pointed out about Dylan`s releases, "They`re not expensive." And another thing; The Grateful Dead allowed their fans to tape their shows in an era when that was unthinkable for a band to allow. "Who else has this kind of ability to enjoy?" Answer: A Grateful Dead fan.

Great discussion I always find it amazing how many Dylan fans dislike the song “Union Sundown” It’s too close to the truth, that song lyric is pure fact. it was also the last time Dylan wrote a song like that. Probably why i love “Infidels” so much.

I love Union Sundown also. He nailed it in that song. Some ultra-political folks don't like it because they are die-hard converts to their religion/politicaldogma which immediately causes them to raise their hairs in affrontery whenever certain code words like "union" are even mentioned. Haha. (It is also a very direct, impossible to misunderstand, song.....which means it is one of the few Dylan songs they actually can understand, hahaha!) But he nailed it in that song, saying exactly what needed to be said. Greed screws up everything, period.

This is one of your best. And you have a lot of youtube videos. You have created a talk show almost exclusively about music. One question though," how do you feel about this woman coming out now claiming Bob Dylan sexually assaulted her in New York back in whatever 60's or 70's?" BS? Didnt Dylan's lawyer prove he was on tour elsewhere at time? Is that case still going?

I think you nailed it perfectly: BS. I have no idea what is going on with this thing, nor do I care because I'm not really a fan of people coming out of the woodwork after 50 years and making claims like this. BS, I say.

He`s not political. Great reason to respect Dylan. Nowadays I respect any artist who doesn`t use the stage as a podium to flaunt their political views. It`s such a turnoff when they do that. I know a lot of people like when musicians get political but I personally find it arrogant, obnoxious, narcissistic, aggressive, and insulting. Which makes me suspicious about why some artists feel the need to do so.

I agree wholeheartedly, Ralph. I may have sorta been tolerant of, or even liked, that kind of in-your-face thing from rockers when I was a naive arrogant college kid, but then I quickly grew up. Many rockers never seem to have grown up.

Why is Dylan a poet but not say......John Lennon or even someone like Hal David? Isn't it a personal interpretation.......I mean Leonard Cohen had books of poetry before he wrote songs so is he more of a poet? Dylan said in an early interview he was just a Song and Dance man.......maybe that's what he really is.

They are poets to, the diference is in the quality. Dylan is a Song and Dance man by choise and a poet by nature. Or maybe you're right from your side, and I'm right from mine, we're both just one too many mornings, an' a thousand miles behind. Player=Doctor

This video was titled "12 Reasons why I am a Bob Dylan fan", Al. Not "12 Reasons why I think Bob Dylan is a poet whereas Lennon, David, or Cohen were not". Hahaha!! Yes, "poetry" is a subjective thing.....one can argue that......I don't happen to be relativist enough to deem the lyrics of Hal David "poetry", but others might and that is fine. Same with John Lennon......never once thought of his lyrics as poetry, but again, others might. I have only owned a few albums of Cohen's songs and neither the music nor the lyrics grabbed me despite many listens. But I do not doubt the sincerity of anyone who loves Cohen's poetry. As for Dylan's comment that he was just a song and dance man, that was a perfectly apt and hilarious response to the kind of questions posed to him in that famous 1965 press conference.....but I do not for a moment think he thinks his lyrical efforts are merely frivolous endeavors. Nor do most people who are familiar with great poetry. He really is quite something, Al. But yeah, I should do a video of other lyricists I consider superb poets. Thanks for another idea! ;-)

@@CalicoSilver Well at the beginning of the video you were talking about how Dylan's lyrics are poetry and I think he is really a songwriter at heart with fantastic lyrics..which is why I made the comment. The music compliments his words as Lennon or Cohen or David. I don't think I would enjoy Dylan as much without the music.
