12 may I WAS NOT prepared for this it’s all going wrong today.

Kind of busy day today early days learning how to be a dairy farmer with a herd of jerseys, everyday is a school day at the moment, we drop the manhole lid down the slurry and have to empty the channels which was a job we could have done without, in that same moment a cow decided to calve and I was entirely unprepared despite a computer and the cow come with me and learn how to milk cows on a dairy farm.

Hi Charlotte. Thanks for the mention. Your stainless steel sheet is the best thing to do. It is something we need to do. My idea of the chain we put on ours is to keep the shoes off the floor because they wear out very quickly and cost every time they need replacing. In dairy farming every farm is different. Don’t worry about what is right and wrong on farming disisions . Just do what your heart tells you. If it doesn’t work one way try it another way. Keep smiling. Richard Wheelwright. @yorkshirefarming We are busy silage making here and spreading the sh1t. I’ll get a video out soon.

Love the mountain climbing sheep and the new adorable very naughty Jersey cows! However I do have to stick up for them on one thing, I'm sure they removed the keys from the unattended Bobcat as part of their daily health and safety checks 🤣 Thanks for the extended video, its nice every now and again but do appreciate how much effort it must take to do and edit in-between the farming 👍

Hi Charlotte! Milk fever- complicated subject, but can be reduced dramatically throu correct diet to the dry cows, especially pre 3 wks from calving and switching diets as soon as they calve to milking cow ration. Feed a fresh calver milking mix as soon as they calve- I hope your feed advisor has told you this and about v low calcium, dry, bulky pre calving ration then to the milking cow ration. Spotting cows early as possible with MF makes a lot of difference- watch v fresh calvers closely for the signs, get them up, move them around and I'd defo put them into that separate area nxt to the robots, not the main shed coz last thing you want is one down in the sh#t, can't grip to get up and in the way of scraping up etc. Myself I've always kept older cows, 3, 4 th lactation cows on straw for 3 days. Also 1st milking, never take too much milk off an older cow, 6-8 liters plenty, then more nxt milking, after that should be ok. Removing say 15-20 liters increases a chance of MF as the cow needs more calcium, so will take it from her already border line body. I hope some of these comments I make make sense to you, if you want to ask any advice, plz ask me, no prob.

We got 4 sheep what does not belong to my self or neighbours roaming around, the owners have moved as well and they can't catch them. It's getting to be a real pain, and we had two late nights trying to catch them. They went missing on the 20th of April. Your sheep look very well behaved 😊

You’re doing great! Don’t over think the calves!! We raise them single for a few days if we can. But then we move them into group pens of up to 6. It works really well. Jersey calves aren’t “beefy” and will need coats even in this weather or if it gets rainy and chilly. Especially if your building is cold. They can’t regulate their temps until 6wks old. Your calf pens are great. Oh and I TOLD YOU SO!!! 🤪Never leave tools, keys or equipment around Jerseys 😂😂
