Have you recovered platinum group metals from your sterling silver slimes? I'm curious if its worth refining the sterling silver slimes and used filters for PGM or if its just silver and left over crud from melting.

If you routinely recycle old silver it is definitely worth it. Old silver contains more PGM.

Nice crystals... I just bought DC source for future silver cell. Sreetips uses 3,5 V, small crystals. I like your 1,5 V better.

What is the difference between 1.5 volts compared to 3.5 for a silver cell? Is a larger stainless container better for a cell? I have access to a 25L bowl.

The lower voltage seems to work better. The larger container would just allow you to grow more silver.

If you ran one in your house would it rust your door hinges and stuff from nitric acid fumes???

I have been running different silver cells in my office with no noticeable environmental pollution. When you make your electrolyte for your silver cell you are supposed to consume all the free nitric acid. There should only be a dilute silver nitrate solution in that cell. No nitric acid fumes present. The only danger I do see in running a cell like this is. You will get a formation of silver and copper nitrate crystals on the top of your cell which may become airborne if you have a fan or an open window in the room. And of course knocking your cell over would be disastrous whether you are at home or in a lab setting.

@@stevennolan2675 running a silver cell in your house isn't that dangerous as long as you keep it in a contained area. The dangerous part is making the electrolyte. That really should only be performed inside a fume hood or outside with a fan blowing away from you.

Hi Phillip What do you use for your filter basket ?

The basket itself was just a plastic food container. I then drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of the container. As a attempt to direct the flow of electrons through the shot in not out the sides of the basket. The basket is also there for structure as silver is quite heavy. The filter material is a shop vac Dacron filter bag. I just cut it so it would fit in the basket without wicking too much of the solution out.

So what do you do with the dish full of mud? There are clearly many ounces of silver in that mud. Do you use it a spoonful at a time on your next cell run so as not to clog the next filter...or what? I'm not seeing an easy solution to that problem.

I cleaned up with copper wire. That is all that is needed to transform the silver into a usable state.

This looks fun but also very toxic. What do you do with all that liquid you use? How do you dispose of it properly and is it expensive to get rid of it?

The liquid used starts out as silver nitrate. That is the electrolyte for the electrolytic silver cell. As the silver is purified, copper is deposited into solution.Creating copper nitrate.Copper nitrate is easily destroyed with sodium hydroxide.Once filtered and ph balanced it is OK to pour down the drain.

@@philipbender956 have you tried converting the copper nitrate back to nitric acid and copper sulfate? I saw a KZread video that did that. But then you're left with copper sulfate. Is there a way to extract the copper from copper sulfate?

You added too much nitric acid. So it keeps redissolving the microscopic gold.

this looks like 5 9s or is there more you can get out of it ?.in other words can you get 6 9s.

I suppose you could get six 9's But being on Earth in our atmosphere makes that very difficult to achieve. Just placing a freshly poured bar of silver on the same countertop that just had a freshly poured bar of gold on it will contaminate that silver. Even holding the silver in your hands will impart a small amount of contamination.

Just want to add that silver's properties are not due to free electrons. Copper, silver, and gold all have the same number of free electrons per atom. Bulk copper has a higher free electron density. Silver is not only the best conductor. This also makes it the best heat conductor and visible light reflector of all elements. We need to take quantum mechanics into account to get a full answer.

@@philipbender956 I had to work out Fermi energy levels (Fermi spheres) in quantum mechanics, but even that's insufficient to nail down silver as the best conductor. You'd need a high level quantum mechanics treatment to settle the issue.

I purchased all of my silver from eBay auctions for Scrap Sterling Silver. I prefer scrapping sterling silver plates and silverware over sterling silver jewelry. All the silver in this video is from recycled sterling silver.

@@Barribt items like RAM and gold fingers are always overpriced on eBay. People seem to think they're scrap computer parts and scrap jewelry are worth much more than they really are. When you are selling to the entire world you are bound to find someone who is willing to overpay for anything. Your best bet for purchasing computer parts or gold fingers on eBay is to make someone an offer or bid on the higher-end auctions preferably over $500. There are much less people willing to spend $500 on computer parts then there are who are willing to spend $80. As far as purchasing silver on eBay. You need to research the price of silver before you place any bids or make any offers. Coinapps.com has an excellent precious metals value calculator. Once you know the value of silver that day. Make an offer for 15 to 20% less than the value. Also don't forget to factor in shipping cost. The same method applies for an auction. Make your max bid 15 to 20% less than the value and try to participate in higher value auctions. I have purchased many pounds of silver at a reduced price this way. (There are generally less people bidding.) I hope this explanation was helpful. Remember gold fingers on average contain about 1.3 grams of gold per pound.

@@Barribt of course you can offer less. Anytime it says make offer you can offer whatever price you like. The worst that will happen is they will say no or they will give you a counter offer. You'd be surprised at how cheaply you can purchase silver this way. Using this method it's best to browse the newest listings. Make your offer before anyone else. Sometimes people just want to make a quick sale and a pawn shop will only give you 50% of the value.

That so-called rinsed silver is heavily contaminated. Whats wrong with using water?

A plastic fork is clean and disposable. Also the plastic fork is fairly inert and won't react with the nitric acid or silver nitrate.

Philip Bender i know about the prongs and water draining. I use a large spatula, heated snd bent like a spoon. My crystals are in a large bowl and can empty it quite fast. It would take me a half hour using a fork.
