    I just read Call Me By Your Name and We Were Liars, actually! (we were liars was because you mentioned it, yes I cried) I read them on holiday along with Mythos by Stephen Fry which was a Greek mythology retelling, and obviously I brought my copy of On Sun Swallowing! I'm home now, and I've just read Carmilla because you mention it so often, and I loved living in that little world for a while, and now I'm onto Frankenstein :) Now I've watched this I definitely want to read Mrs. S and The Girls and Blue Horses this summer.. thank you for reawakening my love of reading, I needed it lots of love

    What I did notice in the girls was how many times the author used to describe “fat/chubby” characters and paint them as losers/awkward people or showed them in a bad light. Idk if it should’ve portrayed the way teenage girls think or if the author is kinda fatphobic🤷

    Book recommendation for you! "I who have never known men" by Jacqueline Harpman♡♡

  • @petrichorpse
    @petrichorpse11 ай бұрын

    I would highly recommend La Bâtarde by Violette Leduc! A relatively lesser known author, it seems, at least among English speakers.. though she was friend and mentee of Simone de Beauvoir and entrenched in the French literary scene of the time. La Bâtarde is her autiobiography, an extremely intimate self-portrait, and it is absolutely dazzling. She carries the shame of having been born out of wedlock-a 'bastard'-as well as being conventionally unattractive. Her portrayal of girlhood is raw and unyielding, and we see her relationships with both men and women. She has such a unique voice.. her prose electrifies. Here is a small excerpt: "Oh God how I longed for a change, oh God how I longed to love Hermine more than myself, oh God how I was beginning to love her, oh God how I longed for a kind of saintliness within our reach: an everyday and never-ending smile."

  • @petrichorpse

    @petrichorpse

    11 ай бұрын

    So much amazing writing in La Bâtarde but I would also like to highlight the first paragraph specifically it is so.....: "My case is not unique: I am afraid of dying and distressed at being in this world. I haven't worked, I haven't studied. I have wept, I have cried out in protest. These tears and cries have taken up a great deal of my time. I am tortured by all that time lost whenever I think about it. I cannot think about things for long, but I can find pleasure in a withered lettuce leaf offering me nothing but regrets to chew over. There is no sustenance in the past. I shall depart as I arrived. Intact, loaded down with the defects that have tormented me. I wish I had been born a statue; I am a slug under my dunghill. Virtues, good qualities, courage, meditation, culture. With arms crossed on my breast I have broken myself against those words."
