12. Houseportrait in Bloemendaal using gouache over watercolor layers

I start the next houseportrait, a villa in Bloemendaal (Holland) where I made some sketches in video nr 2. As I tell in this video, this is not a watercolor of a villa with trees, but it's a watercolor of trees with a villa. The plan is to start with a certain background. I paint this background wet in wet for soft contrasts and transparant effects. Over the uppe layer I paint the branches and twigs in gouache in stead of watercolor. In the video I will explain why.

I enjoy hearing you talk about the movement of the line and paint and what the painting needs to flow. To be an artist is to always be thinking and problem solving. Priests in watercolor have not looked at the watercolors of Sargent and Winslow Homer, and others I am sure, that are full of gouache details. Wonderful result on this house!

Painting is meditative and slows my thinking plus putting paint on surface and seeing evolve into a beautiful picture is magical for me

Thanks for the video.. I also feel that being fast and spontaneous is key in watercolor. That sense of motion and carefree attitude should reflect in the painting. Loved all your works and videos... cheers!

Titus : What drives you to paint? I realise it must be in your soul to create, but what is it that makes you go on your own to put water, paint with sticks on paper ? For me it is like, something mysterious in my mind that excites me to pick up a brush put it in coloured water and see what my hand can relate from my brain to paper, either from imagination or a view from what I see in landscape. I feel so excited to create, it is a wonderful feeling like nothing else.

The Universe provides - I was watching a previous video of yours and I didn't know how you were getting white on top of the color in another watercolor - HERE is the answer :) (Can you tell I am not a painter?) I am deriving much joy from watching and listening to you work. Thank you!
