12 Hour Day in Our Workshop! | Machining, Welding & Line boring
Ғылым және технология
Experience what a typical 12 hour day in our machining workshop at Cutting Edge Engineering is like! It’s Monday which is one of our busiest days of our week. We’ve got two Caterpillar 777 dump truck suspension strut caps to repair and a front end off a Caterpillar 16H Motor Grader for line boring. For the strut caps we need to do machining & welding to reclaim the bearing surface. For the 16H Front End we have one bushing position that we need to bore out, weld up and bore to spec using our new Sir Meccanica WS1 Plus portable line boring machine. We’ll show you exactly what a day in our workshop from 6am to 6pm is like as we get these jobs completed. See all the interruptions, deliveries, trip to the tool shop and everything in between!
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder
- Weldmac WHP-2.5 Power tilt positioner
- Sir Meccanica WS1 Plus Portable line boring machine

I subscribed for three reasons....1. Homey, 2. You remind me of my hard working children who also have a bully breed shop dog, and 3. You're Aussies. I know you get exasperated with us yanks, but you're the closest thing to a twin as we can get. We love you guys...and your dadgum dog, too!
I think a half a million people agree, we're perfectly happy with the content you put out. Thanks for your effort and skill.
Why do I get the feeling that even if you were 20 people, you'd still have too many jobs to handle? One video a week is definitely enough. It makes Fridays special!
I am exhausted just watching this. It looks like you have reached the point where a helper will be worth it. If nothing else, it will free you up from setup, cleanup, part prep, and lesser skilled roles. You would do the skilled work and finishing. You have so many machines now that extra staff will help you put more work through and yield more from what you have.
There is simply no better channel on KZread than this one for learning how large machinery parts can be repaired PROPERLY. It's ultra educational.

The intro with the coffee machines and two mugs, brings back nice memories for me. I have a shop here in Ontario Canada, my wife and I ran for almost over 25 years. We started at 9:00 AM however, (not 6:00 lol) We fixed locks and cut keys (technically still machining :) ) .. we'd make coffee and toast and sit on the front porch 9:00 am waiting for customers :) She passed away a few years ago (only 40 years old) and now I am in the process of selling the shop and our shop and home (all one building) .. So Much JUNK collected here after all these decades!! Literally sent one point two, Metric Tonnes to the dump last week) ... :( I still have two (out of 5) kids at home .. we will move to an apartment, and I'll be semi retired, just doing some gravy jobs, for cash a few calls a week :) But I do so miss, the early morning coffee on the porch with my wife :) ... thank you everyone who read this far ... it's more for me to get feeling out, than inform you all! :)
Thank you Kurtis and Karen for this video. Even when I was young I'm not sure I'd have had the energy to keep going the way that you BOTH do! Karen, thank you for all the time you spend editing out all of Kurtis' mistakes (haha) and to both of you for including them at the end. You are real people. Also, Homey is quite the beast, Love him. I can only speak for myself but most people watching your videos probably don't care if you repeat things. Instead I think people are fascinated by your technique and the heaviness of the type of equipment you use and repair which is very unusual for most people. I couldn't care less about welding, I don't care about learning how to weld but I am a little fascinated on how you do the repairs and the heavy equipment. Keep up the "spirit" of your videos and IMO don't worry about repeating. Nothing is absolutely the exact same. Have a great day! 👍😎 - Florida USA.

There might be another slant to this. Right now Kurtis is in his prime. He and Karen have taken on a lot of capital equipment and facility. If something were to happen to Kurtis's physical ability.... well all production comes to a stop. With employees, there is the possibility that things can continue and Kurtis could take it a bit easier, but still ensure quality. Might be another way to look at the future... moving heavy loads, and all the welding positions do take a toll on the body with time.

14:05 - always good to have a list. Glad to see someone with the skills, tools, and overhead you have has a list of work to do. It can be overwhelming at times, but it's a lot better than sitting around twittering your thumbs lol That 'I told you so' phone call was awesome.
Your Precision is a true pleasure to watch. Keep up the work!
Looks like a nice morning, best part of the day before the phone starts ringing. Regards Richard 🇬🇧

I would watch everything form you 🤗I appreciate every bit of video you make and that you have time for us/me, viewers, the knowledge you put out there is worth every cent. Allways so amazed when Kurtis explains everything into details, and you Karen the video edditing just keeps getting better and better. The skills, humor, knowledge you two have are insane 🤭. Would watch every video from you, you are my friday routine, always happy on friday morning watching your videos here in Slovakia in central EU. Have a good one. You two are lovely and deserve only the best. 😊
love the sunset shot at the end, Karen!! love your guys' videos so much, thank you
Kurtis, your videos are so informative and also entertaining. They are perfect for those of us who have a little knowledge of machining but want to learn more. Thanks !!
The hardest thing for a small shop is making the transition to having employees. A good worker doesn't always make a good boss. The boss needs to figure what the worker is good at and use that. They can't be as good as you or they would have their own shop. Then stepping back when you are better than they are is really hard. Last is getting out of eyesight. Trusting them. Most kids today will wait till you leave then go screw around. Good luck expanding when this slow economy picks up. You'll do great. Hire a paycheck bookkeeping company with your CPA. That made things really easy for my wife. She got the statements and signed the checks to the government when they told her. That was in the USA but I'm sure you're the same way. TAXES!!! ARGGG!!!

Probably an unfair generalisation of "kids" but even if you got in a part time semi retired person to clean up after jobs, help on the forks/crane, run to suppliers, deliver to customers etc. that alone would save a shitload of time.
I can say, as someone in the Land of Bananas, who got out of the lighter side of the Mechanical repair business due to health reasons, we did not have nearly enough people who are able to do what you do, and it's only gotten worse in the last 6 years. We went from diagnosing and fixing the root cause of the problem, to firing the parts cannon at most issues and crying when we couldn't figure it out. We have gone from actual testing of components to needing a computer science degree to figure out that a fuel pump is failing. I lost count of the number of times we could have used someone like you who could fix a major failure of what you would consider a small to medium hydraulic cylinder for refuse vehicles and the smaller Caterpillar machines. and the welding and machining of other parts. Kurtis, I tip my........Christ, I can't even remember what cup of black diesel motor oil coffee I am on at this point. Regardless of what cup I am on, I tip my cup to you. Job well done sir.

The old scool knowledge is gone, and by that I mean no one wants to get dirty and learn old geezers knowledge anymore.
Thank you for sharing your day. I hope your customers watch the videos. Your work ethic and commitment to excellence really shine here.
The joys of a busy successful shop. Keep up the great work and your subs understand.
Kurtis is a great teacher even though he doesn't realize it, I've probably learned more from your videos than everything I've seen on KZread. You just have a way of making things look simple. The highlight of my week is watching CEE. Love the coffee intro btw.

Great to hear!
🔥Kurtis and Karen, brilliant idea, thanks very much for this glimpse into your week. I look forward to your weekly video; don’t think we don’t appreciate the time and energy a single video requires. Best Regards to you both.
Thanks for taking the time out for putting these shows online - no small feat! Appreciative also knowing quotes & book- keeping daily are of requirement . The day doesn’t just end here @ close of show , phones don’t stop ringing either !! Great viewing & backup for jobs Soundly completed 👍 Trent/ Brisbane
Love for your work and life in general is the secret sauce to everything you do Kurtis and Karen. I really appreciate your interaction with the birds and that hyped puppy. His antics are just a hoot to watch. Oh! And those magnetic gadgets are just great for cleaning the floor. Never seen before.
Great video. Nice to see some everyday going ons in the shop. Never would've thought Kurtis would be drinking fancy coffee. I don't know what that pie was but it looked damn good. Now we need a typical work day for Karen. Also I hope you charge well for all that line boring and welding. So much set up, I would hate those jobs.

Really! Sitting here with my morning coffee (almost 6AM here in Georgia, the US one). I don't think we have those pies here. Those looked like good fries too! 😁

@@PhilG999 We don't really have branded Fish and Chip shops in Australia. People have tried but the humble little family run corner store type of shop wins out..
