12 Gauge to .410 Shotgun Adapter

Ғылым және технология

In this video we have a look at an inexpensive 12 gauge to .410 shotgun adapter. Made of plastic with metal reinforcement this adapter allows you to shoot .410 2-1/2" shells in 12 gauge shotguns.

    This is called a PC 410 and was invented around 30+ years ago by Ned Plummer. Ned happens to be my dad and I remember posing for the sales photos when I was young I also remember many nights putting the inserts in these . These were sold in his sporting good store and he actually held the patten on this.

    I applicate your videos, they are straight forward and informative. also, you don't get some super expensive firearm to demonstrate what the real goal of the video is. Btw, those Bakal shotguns are the real deal for a reasonable price, most of the added features are just standard on what they build and expected to be standard for the sportsman for what you buy. Many of those adapters are the same, they do not fit the bore past the chamber and that causes a wide variety of things to happen. btw, I miss your chats with Gungeek, You guys should get together and have another. Good video -Dave

    Thanks for the feedback Dave. That IJ-17 Baikal in the video in very worn condition, but still works like a champ. The IJ-17 is probably the least common of all the Baikal variants, I would like to source a nicer example, but its only the second one I've seen for sale in the past five years. Perhaps Gungeek and I will do a chat or two over the holidays.

    I have that very same adapter in my collection! Had it for 30 years at least. Been doing extensive testing on smoothbore & rifled adapters, just finished "Phase 1" test of 12-28 ga. & 12-410 "Little Skeeters" yesterday. Also on Round 4 of testing .357, .44 & .45 Colt shotshells in smoothbore 12 ga adapter. They are interesting. Also testing the "Hammond Game Getter" .243 (Shoots #3 buck pellets). Mike

    Yep, these little plastic adapters have been around a long time, I'm sure they have been sold for at least 40 years. I found a place on-line that still lists them for sale, about $10 in the USA. Quite a few guys at the local skeet club have used the "Little Skeeters" and seem pleased with them, unlike the adapter in the video the 12 to 410 Little Skeeter is a little longer giving a short amount of barrel to allow the slow powder used in 410 shells to work. Your testing sounds interesting.

    Very good information. The velocity was something I had never considered before buying a set of shot lane adapters for my 12 gauge single shotgun. Quite disappointed to see this . Still they would help in an emergency situation. Thank you.

    The Short Lane 12 gauge to 410 adapter is a bit longer than this plastic one so there should be a little more velocity - I would guess 700 fps with the same shells.

    @@314299 I’m going to have to be in that 10 yard range to make it effective for small game. I do know that Chiappa makes a adapter kit that has a 12” long . I think. I also believe Short Lane does too. I just purchased them before I did any research on them. My fault.

    I've used a rifled one in .38 Spl/.357 Mag, not a lot of "accuracy" with something that fits loosely in the chamber like that one did, it needed a few wraps of tape around it to snug it up.

    A buddy at work has some Short Lane adapters. His are steel and rifled. He has a set for his single shot 20 gauge. I think he has 38 special, 9mm,410 bore and even 22lr. Are these similar to what you showed. I looked at thier site and a rifled set is well over 100 dollars. Any way always enjoy your videos thank you for the hard work.

    I've seen those adapters, one of the club members had a set of them in a fancy nylon carrying case. A fairly expensive set to buy here. Any idea of the sort of accuracy one could expect from those things?

  • @STMwoodturning
    @STMwoodturning3 жыл бұрын

    I wonder if the velocity changes were due to the plastic body of the adapter flexing and stretching from the heat developed during firing. As more shots are fired, the plastic is going to move. A steel version might be more consistent but the velocities would still be much lower than firing the same shells in a proper .410 barrel

  • @314299

    @314299

    3 жыл бұрын

    Perhaps to some degree flex might play a part but I think the issue is the lack of effective barrel length. The powder used in 410 loads is quite slow burning (by shotgun standards) and it needs a reasonable amount of barrel to get burning properly and to build up repeatable pressure and therefore velocity.

    While not a terribly useful item In think these might have a couple uses. First it would be a way for a new shooter or child to try shooting a shotgun without the intimidation of recoil - and if all you have to work with is a 12 gauge these things would be a way to do that. The other idea is that these might be useful if you wanted a super reduced load for use inside a barn or feed silo to shoot rodents at close range, limited power could keep from shooting thru walls/roof, etc.

  • @314299

    @314299

    3 жыл бұрын

    The test distances were given in the video. Barrel is 29" and choke is a very tight full, pretty close to being extra full. I suspect neither barrel length or choke have a significant impact on velocity with such a small wad in a large barrel.

    While not a man stopper, this would most likely deter an attack should the aggressor take one to the face. Not my first choice, but preferred or correct caliber isn’t always available these days. Small critters probably won’t appreciate it either. I wonder if one could be made with pvc or other plumbing parts 🤔

  • @314299

    @314299

    Well I certainly would not want to be shot in the face with one of these - or anything else! As for a home made version it might be possible, but remember these have a steel reinforcement in the base, I'm sure they made them that way for good reason.

    Dropping down smaller distances in gauges works better. I have a 10 to 12 and a 16 to 20. You can shoot these older guns with cheaper ammo.

  • @314299

    @314299

    That is true. Adapters that go down a gauge generally work quite well as modern gas sealing wads will let the pressure build up and therefor you can get decent performance.

    I had a problem with a 20 to 28 adapter by "Little Skeeters." The round got stuck in the adapter and the wall of the adapter was so thin I couldn't remove the shell without denting and damaging the adapter. We even dried drilling the round out but nothing worked. It basically was a one time use tool. I think I sold it for maybe 2 dollars (I had paid about $100 I think) with the shell still in it. So now I only use adapters that are at least 10/100 of an inch smaller, like 20 to 410. That way the adapters are thicker and more sturdy. I also avoid Little Skeeters altogether. I think the bore of their adapter had to be defective or else why would a round get stuck so solidly, like the brass just welded itself into the tube.
