Love Iceland was there in the late 70s for one year. Most beautiful place .

Good film, well done. Cycled across Iceland 30 years ago, I went over the Sprengisandur route which it seems is the F26 you referred to in the film although back then it was called the F28, going by my old photos. I can only remember one significant unbridged river crossing, which was thigh deep and left me with freezing cold feet for the rest of the day 😂

Hi film moving, after finishing my gear weight was 23 kg. So i ate about 10 kg. I use ranger 3.0 tough. In front tubeless but rear got a tube some months ago. Happy rides!

Hi esariasm, I really have no idea. But the roads weren't that steep. I think max 8%. The coastal areas contain more climbing than the interior. From the coast to the center it's about 1 day cycling with mean elevation of < 5%. Compared to the Andes the climbing is easy. greetz Hartger

Hi Guiseppe I was lucky to have a tailwind most of the times in the highlands. If not 50K is a reasonable distance, but with very strong winds you will have to walk -> 25 K a day. Max distance was about 80 in the highlands.

@@PioneeringPedals Thank you for your reply. I am planning to cycle the ring road ( fully on tarmac ) in roughly 2 weeks with 3 rest days. The average distance per day 150K with days going up to 180K. I am a keen cyclist, do you think this is realistic? I thought I would average around 20/25 km based on my previous bikepacking trips.

When did you do this ride? I think you have to be very resilient even slightly mad to do it in this type of weather. It must have been grim, the cold, the wet, the damp, the wind and not being warm and dry. There has to be a challenge but is Iceland worth the challenge given it is so empty in many places? I think maybe it would be better in warmer more settled weather or on an off road/adventure motorbike?

Hi Alex, I rode it in september. The reason was that in july and august, the weather is warmer, but due to the melting of the glaciers, the waterlevel in the rivers is higher. Summer 2021 was exceptionally warm. Still in September the level of a couple of rivers was to high for me. The harship was in the period between cycling and entering my sleepingbag or vice versa in the morning. When you're cycling you create enough warmth. Most people do Iceland by jeep and sleep in hotels or cabins. They look at iceland, I was Iceland (in my huble opion ;-). Yeah it was an everyday fight, but it was surely worth it. By the way I saw a lot of off road motorbikes. I think that can be a great adventure to. Have great rides!

@@PioneeringPedals You are certainly very determined and prepared to put up with a lot of discomfort. 10/10. For me I am not so hardened as I have done a lot of it in the past and I am now soft and like an easy enjoyable life. I still like a challenge for sure but being cold, wet and blown all over the place is not one of them. Thank you very much for making your video and showing Iceland from a cycling perspective. It confirms what I already knew about Iceland. A great destination, but for cycling ......... not for me. Shall look forward to your next video. Lovely bike btw. I have a Troll but would love the larger ECR but they are no longer made as Surly discontinued them and they never come up for sale second hand and if they occasionally do they are the wrong size. I need an M. All the best to you.

How was the camping, were you in campsites or wild camping.. You mentioned you camped in a Gully.

Hi Mart in the highlands it was only wildcamping because the huts and campsites alteady closed for winter. On the coastline campsites were open but not very few. I camped at some. I also took a cabin and slept in a hostel at a campsite. Wildcamping in the coastal areas is great, water enough. In the interior i found little water good for drinking. Are you preparing a trip?

Love the understated humor (re. the wonderful 'slightly wet' road); Iceland would be somewhere one traversed by necessity to get to somewhere nicer if on a grand tour in my world. I'd also need some booze and trees to help me deal with the grey darkness though. How people Live there blows me away; I'd have to drink and imbibe more trees to Not get super depressed there... Btw, where's the single-track?

I have been claiming for quite a few years that riding in Iceland is not worthwhile. There are dozens of videos Demonstrates my idea. And here is another one emphasizes that. Iceland isn't suitable for bikepacking or cycle touring. And even the big ring road is quite boring. You want to explore Iceland? Do it by motorized vehicle to gap a big distances and bad weather in short time. Don't spend your time your money and cycling efforts. Riding there is not rewarding at all. NO FUN! And honestly, The video is quite depressing.
