Alloy wheels are exposed to the elements and all sorts of dirt and road grime. WD-40 Multi-Use Product protects metal from rust and corrosion, penetrates stuck parts, displaces moisture and lubricates almost anything…and cleans up alloy wheels a treat! Simply spray on a clean, soft cloth and rub over. For more stubborn dirt and grime, use a brush or apply more pressure to remove. Don’t Spray on Brakes....

WD stands for "water displacing" and its main use is as a solvent or rust dissolver. The lubricant-like properties of WD-40 come not from the substance itself, but from dissolving components. And the effect doesn't last. WD-40 can be a good substance to start with - it can help clean up rust or other grime

Keep in mind that WD-40 attracts dirt, so where you are lubricating parts, either a good grease or motorcycle chain lubricant is a a good idea after they are freed up with WD-40. I was using it to keep my chain binders from rusting up and being hard to use (i'm a truck driver flat bed), but after a long trip they were gummed up with dirt. I switched to motorcycle chain lubricant which sheds dirt and lubricates and that took care of the problem. It even stays on in the rain. So use WD-40 to unstick a frozen bolt etc, but then put a lubricant on it for the long term. Also I don't think a good idea to clean rims as there is a big chance it could get on the break pads as others here have mentioned, however rear drum breaks I think would be ok. For wheels Maquires mag wheel cleaner is the best. WD-40 also makes good Potato Cannon propellant as it's fairly combustible when confined like gasoline or Petrol as this guy appears to be from the UK. I often use it to start my wood stove up.

Here's a tad of info. looks Like your in love with WD-40, which is a "SOLVENT" and will do what "Solvents" do. As being a antique clock re-builder, I will not allow a can of WD-40 in my place of work. Wd-40 actually "Attracks moisture out of the air and displaces this on anything you spray it on. This can easily be proven by Taking a brand new rifle or shotgun and spraying down the outside of all its metallic surfaces, the stowing it away in it's case for a few months and then wipe it down with a nice new white cloth and see all the rust that your WD-40 created. I really believe this is done by way of design,as I have only found this stuff to be good as a solvent for very short term. It should only be marketed as a solvent in my opinion, as I have seen the results of what WD-40 has done to electrical panels and many other things that it is believed to PROTECT. Marketing 101 !

"WD-40" is abbreviated from the term "Water Displacement, 40th formula", suggesting it was the result of the 40th attempt to create the product. The spray, composed of various hydrocarbons, was originally designed to be used by Convair to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion.

W-40 is a lubricant, it has oil.. spraying w-40 on wheels might not be a good idea if you spray it over the rotors, it will mess up the brake pads

It's a light oil....any light oil will thin. A heavier oil.....diesel fuel is an oil for example, as is kerosene the main oil in WD40.....best to keep it away from brake surfaces though :)

Plus gas or other actual penetrating lube is better for rusted in bolts...and long term oil is better as wd40 is more for water displacement and short term fix 🙂👍🏻

Another use: repel moist and corrosion from connectors. It is non conductive, so just spray. Even works great with ignition parts, like old type distributor and on sparkplugs and its leads.
