The blade he just prepared will keep an edge probably five times as long as the one he would buy at the store. Welding and tempering makes it extremely hard similar to a good knife blade

Totally true ... I've bought an attachment for a drill to sharpened lawnmower blade and it doesn't work at all. If you got a way to sharpen the blade that actually works, you also need to balance it So yeah waste of money and time

You gotta love the posters that say "go and buy a new blade". Obviously brought up in a throw away household. New blades for my mower are $60 - $80 AUD so I do this to get a bit more life out of the blades.
new lawnmower blades are readily available in my country. I will just buy a new one. Want my old one??
