Hello Kenny, I love your channel, I'm starting out, collecting vinyl records, where Iive it's hard finding, the great jazz artists that I love, I went to a flee market the other day, I found a lot of great albums, I spent around $160, the problem was, I didn't look at the records, some of them were dirty and scratched up, I cleaned them up the best I could, some of them will have some hiss and pop, Oh Well, I still love the album, I'm learning, to me, its like stepping back in time, listening to my vinyl records, it's a fun hobby!

$560US is the most I’ve spent. But it was for an LP that I’ve wanted for the last 29 years and is limited to 314 copies. It’s not something I do often at all, and I’m pretty much getting to a point where I have most of the grails that I want.

Hi Kenny, first off thank you for your recommendation of that Joint Venture Record it is fantastic, especially on the Hana ML. I think 12,600 is a lot of money for the record, but you have to put it into perspective. A person that has that kind of money to spend is in a different financial position than most, so it's possible that $12,600 is like $120.00 or even $12.00 to that person, for that person the money wasn't the issue. I buy used like you, but times have changed and even used stores and thrift stores are over pricing for vinyl due to the resurgence, accounting for inflation. The most that I have ever spent was on my Beatles Mono Box set at $600, but I have had offers to buy it for much more than that. I prefer original copies but will buy a re-issue until I come across an original if that happens. Think of an Original Pressing like you are building an old 1950-1975 car and you want it to have all original parts, that's what original pressings mean to others. Of course you can buy a newer car with more features, but what is the fun in that, it's easy. I buy UHQRs, Mo-Fi and Tone Poets and my wife who does support my hobbies, thinks $35-150, tone poet or UHQR is ridiculous, and this applies to other people that I know, but I may feel that a bicycle at $3000 is expensive or a bowling ball at $300-500 or even golf clubs at $5000 is high. There has only been one time that my wife actually advised me to spend $190 on a record and that was Michael Jackson's History 3LP album. She did this because she knew that Jackson was made to re-record the album due to a word that he used that the Jewish Population found to be offensive and she said this would probably increase the value and she was right. I also bought Jackson's Blood on the Dance floor and it's gone up to 3-4 times what I paid for it. Records values like anything else is determined by rarity, but you are right Kenny, a light of times the new pressings are mastered better. This all depends on your financial position, personal enjoyment and love for your hobby. Imagine people with 15-million-dollar homes, Rolex watches, and 1-million-dollar cars, it's all prospective, depending on income. Look at what we both spent for that Hana ML cartridge in the eyes of others. There are people who spend over 12,600 on Amps, Speakers, Turntables, Phono Preamps, DACS, Preamps, Tone Arms and yes Phono Cartridges. Heck some non-audiophiles would think that we are all crazy for spending what we do on home audio, where $12,600 can be a drop in the bucket. Life is short and I say do what makes you happy and what you can afford. I was taught early, never judge another man or women life through your eyes, because you will never be happy with the results.

Hi Kenny, love your channel! I own many jazz and pop/rock OGs. I did pay high prices for many of them for different reasons, but the main reason remains: Scarcity! I live in Europe, and many of the records you are showing that costed you 1-4 dollars, are simply impossible to find here! So before the latest reissue mania, our only source to get such records were online auctions or Discogs, and the competition is always fierce between European and Japanese buyers! You are lucky to live in the country where most jazz records were issued, and that’s why you have access to lower prices as they are more abundant in the US. Btw. I own the Helen Mirren mono OG and the AP reissue, and can say that the reissue has an excellent audiophile sound, but lacks some immediacy and vibrancy I hear from the mono OG, that’s why I keep them both!😊

I once spent $120 on a acetate test pressing of a single song that was never released nor was it available digitally. First thing I did was transfer it at 24/96 high res digital, cleaned it up then resold it a few years later for a bit more. I wish I had a way to transfer it to DSD at the time since DSD but its no big deal. The music is way more important than the rarity or percieved value of something for me.

Myself, I’ve spent about $30 for a great Woodstock copy. Now, I would think that a dealer spent $12.6k for the record and figures they can make a good profit off of it. OG pressings (in very good shape) can have a magic that later issues may not. I have sone OGs that sound great but they are scratched up or gouged from cheap record players, but the magic can shine through even if there’s a lot of noise/even skips. For those of us who either can’t afford or find a pristine OG we’ll have to be satisfied with a later pressing, hopefully one that sounds good on its own merits.

I grew up in the late mid to late 70's and 80's so I remember hearing seeing older people play records. When I got older I remember the high quality of music I heard on those records so I see how someone especially from that time period could get into collecting records. My opinion is do what makes you happy. I remember when I first started buying albums feeling the excitement of my heart pounding thinking, I wonder how it's going to sound? Those at the time were compact disc & tapes but my taste had been shaped by what I heard on vinyl in the 70's & 80's. One of the things I remember hearing people say that own records is you get better sound quality on vinyl. If this is true and being that I like high quality sound, then there's a legit reason for someone to take up such a hobby. To all the vinyl collectors out there, right on. 👍 ✌️

People at the time knew who they were but you didn't get the full level of grade A entertainment until you saw them live. Prince even said they were his favorite group. I think you'll really enjoy it when you get around to listening to it? I live in Florida so the weather here is similar to where you live, just a bit warmer. Also Kid Creole and the Coconuts did a live performance in 2010 Annie I'm not your Daddy(Night of the Proms). It's on youtube if you want to check it out. The crowd went crazy. 👍

first pressings of classic jazz records are going through the roof. Of course they are all analog which is important for many and I agree, it sounds better than digital.. But some audiophile all analog reissues might even sound better because of the improved mastering chains. On the other side, those original tapes might have deteriorated a bit in the last 60 or 70 years so even a perfect improved all analog mastering might not sound as good as a M original pressing I have many of the Acoustic Tech reissues, all the Miles and Monk albums and some Rollins. Only wish the Monks Music was mono and not stereo. Don't really dig the stereo. The OJC mono reissue sounds better and it's from the original tapes. Most I've ever paid for a used record is a New York punk EP for $700. I needed it for my film. The last time it sold a few years ago it fetched $1500..

Hey Kenny: I hope you and your family are all well. I have always collected a bit differently than many people. When I first started buying records I usually had money for 1 or 2 records, so I was buying new records. This was based on several things. Right or wrong… 1. I hated clicks, pops and record noise, so I figured I’d get far less of those on new LPs. 2. I looked at used records as “Inheriting someone else’s problems” 3. I wanted to spend my time listening to records, not crate digging for hours. I looked ONLY for new records in the regular bins. As I got my first system at 16 and I no longer needed to use my parents Mono console, I began to branch out into imported records due to the often superior sound. I would go into Boston & later Detroit for college. I would look at the larger record stores that had a good selection of imports. I bent my rule about used record slightly. If a store had a well organized section of bins with used, imports I would look through them due to the often superior sound of certain imports. During my college years weekly trips to the record stores in Boston, Detroit & Windsor, ONT Can were typical. Windsor was an easy drive across the river from Detroit & Canadian pressings & European imports were much easier to find. With the decline in pressing quality of many records due to the Oil Crisis of the 70’s, I was an early CD adoptee. I bought a 2nd generation Yamaha CD player. I abandoned purchasing records in 1987 and was away for 30 years. In 2017 I upgrade my entire system and bought a new turntable: The EAT C-Sharp, with an MC cart. I was stunned at how good records sounded on the new gear. I got a vacuum based record cleaner and quickly upgraded to ultrasonic cleaner. I also bought a Sweet Vinyl Sugar Cube SC-2 Mini click & pop remover. I found with ultrasonic cleaning and the Sugar Cube, VG+ records could be rendered dead quiet. I quickly fell down the Audiophile LP rabbit hole as well as buying used records. After a Liver Transplant and COVID my days of going to a record store are limited. Fortunately my local record store dealer has been a HUGE help. When he gets used records in that he knows might interest me, he will text me pictures & will arrange to get them to me. He also will go to Flea Markets or Record Shows and text me pictures of records he knows I might like. His typical customers don’t like many of the genres I like, but if I express interest in LPs at the shows he will buy them for me. I am SO lucky. As for record collectors paying $ BIG $, $ BIG $ $ Bucks $… As long as they are paying all their bills and their significant others are fine with it, I say GO FOR IT. I am happy for them because I have a sense of how it makes them feel. In answer to the price I’ve paid for a used record: the most expensive used record I have bought from three different sources. From a Local Brick & Mortar Store where I could return it if I had problems. It was on their wall. Beatles - LP: Let It Be Naked - Parlophone - $119.00 - (NM/M) From the Vinyl Vault at Acoustic Sounds - A Trusted Source: Count Basie And His Orchestra - LP: April In Paris - MoFi - $150.00 - (M-) From a Seller on Discogs: Clark Terry • Freddie Hubbard • Dizzy Gillespie plus Oscar Peterson • Ray Brown • Joe Pass • Bobby Durham - LP: The Alternate Blues - Pablo Today - $39.00 - (VG+)

To me the Tone Poets are OK, for the price there is nothing wrong, but the old OG´s played on the right system are blowing them away, they have no chance. EVERY person who heard the difference in my room did agree. The Tone Poets are good and it is nice to have the music available on vinyl and in one point they are better, they are quiet. I am a pro Jazz musician all my live, I know what mastering does, it is obvious what Kevin Gray does, RVG had to do it different, but the old mastering was better. Tone Poets let you listen what is on the tape? Better say what is LEFT on the tape🙂

@@mymixture965 the OG Monos are really magical and do in fact sound great and better than modern ones, but for stereo releases I much more prefer the airier and more balanced sound of the Tone Poets/UHQRs than the much more midrange focused old pressings.

O.G. is hood terminology for original gangster. It was the title of rapper Ice T's 1991 album. The title of O G. is a respectable title bestowed upon older Black men in the black community regardless of their occupation by younger black men.

Yes it definitely makes all the sense in the world....that's something that you would have to take up with the entire vinyl community.

Im not sure what the big deal is. As with any collection the price is driven by rarity and what someone is willing to pay. Seems like a lot of youtubers are jumping on this bandwagon and making an issue of a non issue

Unfortunately that record will most likely be mounted on a wall as a piece of art and never to be played .. that’s my suspicion anyway
