When football was all about the game and the crowds, the days before TV and the ridiculous sums of money on offer! A dundee United team that equalled any of the big teams in Europe!

I was at this game......it still goes down as one of the best nights in European football for me and that includes Rotterdam 91 and Barcelona 99! The first leg was 2-2, two fantastic matches.........

When Scottish clubs were even expected to go far in European competitions, before all the money and foreign players ruined our game, now even my team Ayr utd beat Dundee United 5-0, loved watching highlights at night involving united and Aberdeen in Europe back then.

I’m a Dundee United support, We had amazing team in the 80’s, should have won more cups, was too young and wasn’t at the game, was only 7 years old but great games and I fell in love with Manchester United after this

Amazing to think it was 5-4 on aggregate and Dundee United were genuine contenders back then.

Remember listening to it from Ireland as a 10 year old on 5live radio with dodgy reception....midweek... it was gripping stuff and up for grabs right up to the end....a united fan.

From a Celtic fan who grew up with DUFC, A/Deen and us fighting for the league, Hearts later. It's still in my head that going to Tannadice will be a hard game. That was a great team. McLean was a superb manager. I always thought the Dundee Utd side of the early to mid eighties were a better footballing side than Aberdeen. No disrespect Aberdeen. Both were great teams. And I've been chased by the Utility and the ASC. It'd be great to see you both up there again. But don't kick my head in please.

I miss football from this era. It had a lot that the modern game doesn't

I was at Old Trafford watching Celtic play Rapid Vienna that night. There were 50,000 of us. The biggest ever travelling support in football until Seville. I remember we booed when we heard Man U had won.

I remember wishing Robbo well for the 2nd leg when he came to sign some England promotional stuff for a brewery at a nightclub in Hull. He was chuffed that there was at least one genuine United fan there that night and I remember Dundee gave us a helluva game/scare over the two legs. All credit to both teams. This is proper football as it was before the hype and mega bucks ruined it. IMHO, it beats the pants off this modern crap and VAR. Anyone for tiddlywinks before they spoil that too...

I remember this tie. Dundee were unlucky and could’ve won, had the luck ran their way. They contested every ball and the nine goals from the two games represented excellent value from both teams.

Jim Mclean what a manager. A true true great - similar to Clough in that he made an ordinary team into almost Euro champs and he won them their only Scotts Prem div in think 82 - 83 season
