Peter, thanks again for another great trouble shooting video. Although it was a simple fix in the end folks now know how to troubleshoot this in case there was a real problem. Well done my friend. I learned a while back to just reset the units when they come in. I had one on the bench for two weeks trying to find an issue. In the end it was a menu setting lol. Had me pulling my hair out. Thanks again for a very well explained video.

Hmm, what a coincidence...I just checked out a FT-817 for an estate sale on my bench and fortunately it was working FB, lucky me! I had a suspicion about half way thru the video that it might be the issue you found, but it is so easy to look back when you're not in the hot seat and see a potential problem. Good job Peter, thanks for sharing, I always learn something new watching your great videos. 73 - Dino KL0S

Hi Peter, No mater that the problem was a setting, that was a GREAT video. I learned a lot about the correct method to trouble shoot the system. Thank you for all of your hard work making these troubleshooting videos. You are a Master in your profession. Thank you again, John C.

Following your analysis i was thinking quickly, check the switching transistors, check them, check them.... to be really honest I would have gone and look circuit why the "piep-Ing." transistor was not switched on. And probably would have spend cloudless for hours ( gone to driving unit.... etc). Going to the Manuel and switching it on... brilliant! Thanks for this lesson.

"Nice" fault! Moral: always check for finger trouble first! Extra flux is not always a sign of "unauthorised" repairs. It is sometimes also a sign of FACTORY reworking (due to a poor soldering process during manufacture), and only discovered on test. Note also the extra flux on the filter legs. These and other delicate/expensive items are often fitted AFTER the board is soldered, in order to protect them from the radiant heat/hot air used to melt the SMD solder paste.

Nice video, even if the solution is a bit unsatisfying.... btw, the soldering of the transistor /double diode which is right under the big filter does not really look good (at least at the camera) You can see it in the video at around 46:28 on the right side, the one with 2 pins top and one on the down side. Anyway, have a nice Christmas and i hope you get some presents with more difficult faults ;)

Loads of people say “do a reset” and that’d have worked in this case but not teach you what was wrong. Just resetting is as pretty much unscientific as one can get. Worth knowing that if the SSB filter is set and the filter isn’t there or gets dislodged (it is a mobile QRP radio after all) then there’s no output due to no audio path!

amazing retention of knowledge . It's one thing to read it but another to understand it and yet another to remember it . I lack in all three of those categories unfortunately but with that being said , as a business man you have to charge the customer for all you work . What happens when you hand him the Bill and tell him his menu was set wrong ? Great job though and great video . I wish I was as smart as you in Electronics !

My deepest sympathy goes out to all in Germany (Berlin in particular) for the terrible atrocity that has been recently committed. Especially at Christmas (although, such things should NEVER happen regardless of the time of year). Hope you are all ok your end. Concern and warmest regards (Wayne and Nina, England).

A couple of years ago more like 4 now.We set up at field day operated until midnight, and a thunder storm came through while we were sleeping in the concrete basement of a TV transmitter site. Never could hear the storm when we woke in the morning all was dead no receive or transmit never did figure out what happened as the antenna never was hit. I still use the antenna today I'm gonna dig it out and see if a near strike scrambled the settings on the optional filter.Jim

Good work Peter. I enjoyed the video. Those murata fioters are known to fail. I dont know if that probem has been solved for the new models. I have an 897d model for my go system. It is a new model and i have had no problems with it. We learn something new every day. 73 ve3hjl

What a refreshing video! A good lesson in "Look for the simple stuff first", or maybe for chasing a wild goose! Time spent in the shop is never a waste for me-- Especially when someone else is doing the work! Now, how do you bill the customer for this one? :-)
